Very Irresistible for men by Givenchy

Perfect for the gym or quick outings: dark and unusual, I really dig it.

Probably my first ‘signature fragrance’. A gift from my mom in 2010. I was a teenager. I didn’t know what I had in my hands; I used it daily for high school. Of course, there were compliments, and many. Later, I bought another one plus the Cocktail flanker. I still prefer this one. A gourmand fragrance without being overbearing, elegant and sweet, mentholated and citrusy at the top, with a base of hazelnut, coffee, and chocolate. Delicious. No other perfume smells like coffee like this. The longevity and projection are excellent. It’s a shame they discontinued it. Alternatives would be Gentleman Reserve Privée or Gentleman Society Extreme from the same brand, but they only resemble it; they don’t even come close. A year ago, I made the mistake of buying two of these, obviously old ones, from a ‘certified’ seller (as collectors call Facebook sellers) with a crumbling box over time, both original. Why was it a mistake? Because this fragrance, like many others, has an ingredient that ages poorly. Some perfumes survive or even improve with time. This one doesn’t. This aged bottle smells rancid, like cigarette ash with dead flowers, and projects nothing like it originally did. So if you’re thinking of buying one, keep in mind that as of now, it’s been 15 years, and even with careful storage, time is inevitable, and you risk it turning rancid. Obviously, I resold them…

Among my 100+ perfumes, this is in the top 5; it’s such a shame they discontinued it. It had a fresh opening with sparkling mint and strong grapefruit. As it dried down, a delicious milk coffee mixed with elegant dark chocolate blended beautifully with the softened but lasting top notes. The base featured wood from Virginia cedar, with touches of hazelnuts and walnuts that gave it character and masculinity. It shared DNA with Hugo Boss’s The Scent Private Accord. It depended on your pH: if acidic, the mint came out more; if basic, the chocolate. It was unique, very seductive, and women couldn’t help but notice. Ideal for temperate and cold climates, though I wore it in summer out of love. It lasted over 7 hours with moderate projection for the first two. It was my signature scent, and I miss it so much today.

Very Irresistible for Men is a sweet, woody, and aromatic fragrance. Its opening is fresh with a certain degree of sweetness, but the freshness is fleeting, leaving a slightly herbal residual accord. The scent immediately turns woody and chocolatey, very much in line with the current trend of gourmand fragrances; it also reminds me a bit of hazelnut cream. After a couple of hours, it settles into a patchouli and vanilla scent very similar to some Thierry Mugler fragrances. Given its characteristics, it would be ideal for fresh or cold climates, in seasons like autumn and winter, and for night outings, with a partner or for special occasions. Its longevity is regular, between 6 to 8 hours, with a notable trail for the first 30 minutes. Although I have no idea when or why it was discontinued, I imagine that when it launched (2005), gourmand fragrances weren’t as popular, and probably sold poorly. I think if it were relaunched today, it would be more successful than back then.

One of the most exquisite fragrances I’ve ever had. A true delight; I loved from the start that delicious hint of chocolate towards the end of the notes. A fragrance that made me want to lick my skin to complete the sense of smell with taste. I’d like to know why Givenchy decided to discontinue it. Today, February 2023, I just got a 100ml bottle and felt that aroma again, invading you from the first spray, a trail that envelops you and makes you want to keep feeling it. Love at first sniff.

Before the review, I consider myself lucky to have found this discontinued fragrance; I’ll keep looking for another bottle; it’s worth getting this timeless scent. A three-dimensional bottle, like a Monolith of Mystery; its colors are a blurred combination of black and green, very elegant and mysterious. Its opening is an intense citrus-herbal combination, where the herbal notes prevail (a very notable mint); the grapefruit is barely detectable because the base notes are perceived primarily. An exquisite entry, a nobly mixed coffee with hazelnut, producing a creamy, appetizing aroma, just like a cappuccino, producing a warm, dense, very pleasant trail. A very gourmand development, high-end perfumer quality; it’s sweet yet woody, fresh herbal yet sharp citrusy, but as it settles, it produces that exquisite trail. The mysterious touch for me comes from a subtle cocoa, not listed in the notes, but I feel it’s hidden somewhere, like inhaling the scent of opening a box of mint chocolates. Nothing is artificial; the notes are very natural, not cloying, because if you love coffee, you’ll notice how pleasant it is, an excellent, neat, integrated, unique fragrance. This isn’t for teenagers (not all of them), because they still lack the discovery of life’s pleasures, investigating the true and the false, exploring flavors, textures, aromas, colors, sensations, and once you’ve investigated and discerned the right path, you’ll then enjoy this fragrance as a new pleasant olfactory sensation that produces a state of joy and comfort. It’s a shame it’s discontinued; it’s worth 100 fragrances. What its trail and aroma produce is difficult to find elsewhere. I could make references but wouldn’t want to compare it; it’s like that love that never could be, but without a doubt, those moments revealed the mysteries of life, so they are unique and unequal, just like the magic of this fragrance. I have very bad memories of that perfume. I had it in my youth, and the green color of the packaging and bottle caught my attention. Unfortunately, I’ve never liked citrus perfumes, and this was like applying a whole grapefruit on top. Aggressively citrusy; after a few hours, it became tolerable and gave way to the other more woody notes.

I managed to get 40 ml of a 2005 batch from a perfumerie in Argentina recently. It smells simply delicious. I couldn’t test it much because I only wore it once and thought it was fair, but it’s worth trying because the scent is amazing, especially for going out at night.

To me, this is the best men’s perfume I’ve ever owned, whether it’s the original or the reformulation. I’ve had two more bottles over the years, and they smell the same, but they don’t last like they used to. Before, it was that kind of scent where you’d stop smelling it, then suddenly feel it again and think, ‘wow, what a great smell.’ With this Givenchy, I got tons of compliments, and I’m genuinely sad not to have that aroma anymore. None of what I wear now compares to it, not even Dior Homme Intense, which I like. I really hope they bring it back.

Then I saw you again, as if you’d never left, in one of my favorite photos: immortalized, still very young, in that tight light blue sweater and jeans. I wondered what would have happened if we’d met then. Would we have gotten along better? Or would we’ve fought one day and not the next? Maybe when you were younger, you were more dreamy. Maybe there was a time when you were romantic and less cynical. While your sister lit up a cigarette, I tried to imagine who you are now, a few pounds heavier and with a few more regrets. I thought about your body, your eyes, your aimless career. You were frantic in your private life; you loved emotions, you went all out. All to not be alone with yourself, to not stop and reflect on your mistakes, to not watch time slip through your fingers. When you were a girl, you thought you’d have a husband and two kids by the time you were 40, you told me, with a dreamy expression, in one of those rare moments of spontaneity, when you let out the melancholic side that made you irresistible. And Very Irresistible is that perfume you loved so much and adored wearing, sometimes. It’s a very seductive and delicious work, with a notable presence of the declared notes. The bottle is a spectacle in reverse compared to the ladies’ ones; straight, angular, even masculine, and the shift from light to dark green adds a touch of certain glamour that the fragrance undoubtedly radiates. Especially talking about the soft woods combined with hazelnut, which harmonize really well. It’s a proposal that has something invigorating within it, a fizzy, tasty cocktail full of aromas that turns into a hit scent upon contact with the skin. The durability and effect provide complete and quite satisfactory performance, a proposal that spontaneously excited me again during the test (courtesy of Sejano77) and made me remember that you were a warm and irresistible ray of sunshine in my life.

I agree with you, FanDeDuneVint. I have a brand new bottle at home; it smells good and is quite original, getting many compliments, but after a couple of hours, bye bye! to the scent. It only lasts about two hours. By the way, it doesn’t have strong projection like Allure Sport or 212. It would be great if its scent didn’t fade so quickly.

In the end, I managed to get a fragrance I’ve wanted since the first day I started liking the art of fragrances. Almost impossible; it’s not new and not full, but those +-70ml make it worth it. It’s a unique scent; so far, I haven’t smelled anything similar, a strange combination between an expensive after-shave and a Nutella Exquisita-style chocolatey touch. It’s what I was looking for when I blind-bought Valentino Uomo and was disappointed. How and why did Givenchy discontinue such a wonderful gourmand?

I’m one of those who could smell the mint, cedar, and the citrusy parts; that’s all I perceived throughout the day, which I had the bottle constantly in use. Despite containing double the notes, plus good notes, I don’t find them powerful or noticeable. It doesn’t enchant me or crush me; I simply find it very wearable, masculine, and as I said, too versatile. Not very strong either; the scent is moderate, with moderate sillage and projection, perhaps more for night. Any weather makes it super timeless. Great purchase! One of the few that actually lasts on the skin. It’s a 100% chameleon, as they say. I bought it because it lasted days on the cuff of my shirt, and of course, the scent appealed to me. To me, the hazelnut comes through more with a hint of coffee—it sounds like caramel coffee, I didn’t detect any mint. The dry down is woody and sweet, very masculine. It’s not bad, just a matter of taste. Don’t blindly follow reviews; there’s no rulebook for personal preference. As that song goes: ‘How do you explain what it is to feel?’ Cheers!

Absolutely not! It turns me off completely. I’ve never felt so uncomfortable smelling a fragrance; I can’t stand that intense mix of mint and coffee. However, I love the Fresh Attitude version and have it in my collection.
