Jacques Cavallier Belletrud
Jacques Cavallier-Belletrud is a French perfumer who currently works for Louis Vuitton of the Luxury Group LVMH. He was born in Grasse, France, a city known for perfume manufacturing for centuries. He comes from a family of perfumers; his father and grandfather were also perfumers. He has created or collaborated on the creation of more than 80 fragrances and perfumes for fashion house brands such as Parfums Christian Dior, Parfums Givenchy, Issey Miyake, Yves Saint Laurent, Fenty Beauty and Lancôme.
Cavallier is credited with the addition of the synthetic molecule methylbenzodioxepinone (8-methyl-1,5-benzodiazepine-3-one), known as Calone 1951, in several of his most successful perfumes, such as Aqua di Gio and L'Eau d'Issey. Calone provides the prominent "marine" scent in the perfumes and gives a light, airy, sea-breeze aroma with an aqueous watermelon/melon feel. He considers his most successful fragrances to be Acqua di Gio by Giorgio Armani and L’Eau d’Issey by Issey Miyake.
In 2012, Cavallier joined the LVMH Luxury Group as its in-house perfumer to formulate the first fragrance for Louis Vuitton, launched in 2016. LVMH continues a trend of dedicated in-house perfumers who work in luxury fragrance brands, including Jacques Polges at Chanel, Jean-Claude Ellena at Hermès, Mathilde Laurent at Cartier, Thomas Fontaine at Jean Patou and Thierry Wasser at Guerlain.
