Instinct by David Beckham

As a lover of vintage perfumes, especially starched styles like Eau Sauvage, this was perfect for my collection. I tested it at a pharmacy and bought it. For $20, it’s not bad if you like this style. People complain about the longevity, but perfumes that cost ten times as much last just as long as this Beckham… So, it works for me on price and style. It’s the only Beckham I own; I’ve tried the others, and they just didn’t grab my attention.

It’s a modernized fougère, a citrus-aromatic scent in the old-school style (pre-1960). It has a structure reminiscent of Mediterranean and Aqua Fresca, but with a very marked citrus opening. It looks elegant, which doesn’t match the price: it projects no vulgarity and has no exhausting longevity. Moreover, I imagine a well-dressed 40-year-old gentleman could wear it comfortably at a formal gathering without anyone thinking it’s a pharmacy EDT or a football brand. To conclude: it could be sold under a global brand if the formula were more complex. Recommended for those who enjoy simplicity and don’t care about brands.

Very pleasant, but the longevity is ridiculous; it only lasts longer if you spray it on clothes or sheets. It’s an updated vetiver without those dry echoes of the old ones, a wet vetiver where a soapy base of bergamot and herbs stands out, the creamy tone of mandarin, and a black pepper that adds that wet, bitter touch of spiced perfumes, all light and non-overpowering. Cardamom finishes with that spiced wood freshness. It’s pretty, pleasant, wearable, and perfectly handles the transition between old-school gentleman vetivers and today’s sweet vetivers; it’s simply a dynamic, comfortable 2000s citrus wood. It would position itself as an EDT worth considering if not for the duration and minimal sillage, almost invisible. In short: green, woody, and tender, very relaxing.

I think it’s human to always expect more, even though we know expectations are rarely met. Like most of my Beckham perfumes, this was a blind buy; its ultra-low price triggered my instinct. The listed notes made me very curious: that blend of star anise, black pepper, and cardamoma sparked my imagination and convinced me. I had to smell it! At first, it was a slight disappointment; it seemed quite generic, a classic-tinted cologne, a mature aromatic citrus. Very linear, with a sharp initial citrus burst that calms down to a luminous, spiced vetiver base. No trace of those unusual notes. Without getting excited, I’ve used it occasionally, but now that I’m almost out, I’m finding it more and more appealing. And that’s how life goes.

Excellent composition, a delicate green woody scent with a spicy touch, elegant, versatile, fresh, a delight. It shares many notes with Tom Ford EDP’s Gray Vetiver, another delight, but the latter has ingredients and longevity far superior to DB’s Instinct. For the price-to-quality ratio, it’s not bad if you reapply every three hours.

This fragrance is almost imperceptible; you put it on and it says nothing. You feel it a bit, but you don’t always wonder… what’s missing? Certainly, it lacks a spark to connect, because it doesn’t define itself as sweet, citrusy, woody, or anything… You feel like you just put on something that doesn’t even convince you that it smells good 🤷🏻♂️

David Beckham, that guy who still smells good after 88 minutes in the Champions League. He starred in the anecdote by referee Rafa Guerrero, narrated by Eduardo Iturralde in ‘Memories of a Soccer Referee’. It’s clear that David is a clean-cut guy and wants people to know it. We must say that the English have a reputation for being well-groomed; let’s not forget their dandyism. In my opinion, this cologne could fit into that British tradition of elegant, spiced bath waters with fresh hesperidic touches. On me, it lasts, and if I reapply, it’s just out of habit. I admit it, I’m hooked. It evolves, and no stage disappoints me, something that usually happens with other affordable colognes. After many hours on the internet and over two years searching for daily-use colognes at pharmacies, Instinct appeared as a lifelong stable relationship. It’s not my merit, Luca Turin valued it in one of his lists. Instinct proves that you can do a good job for little money. Is there greater luxury than being able to use a quality cologne daily?
