François Demachy is a renowned French perfumer who has created some of the most iconic fragrances of the modern era. Born in Cannes, Demachy spent most of his life in Grasse, the world capital of fragrances, where his father owned a pharmacy. After studying dentistry and physiotherapy, Demachy joined Mane and later studied at the company school of the perfumery firm Charabot.
In 1984, Demachy joined Chanel, where he was appointed Director of Research and Development, collaborating simultaneously on the creation of Chanel perfumes, Ungaro, Bourjois and Tiffany. After twenty-two years at Chanel, he was appointed Director of Development of the cosmetics and perfumes division of LVMH and Chief Perfumer of Christian Dior in 2006.
At Dior, Demachy has created some of the world’s most popular fragrances, including Sauvage, Miss Dior and Dior Homme. He has also collaborated on the production of perfumes for Fendi and Acqua di Parma, both owned by the LVMH group.
In 2009, Demachy created Miss Dior Chérie L’Eau, a sparkling and distinctive floral scent mixed with notes of bitter orange, sour but spicy, Gardenia and white musks. He supervised significant revisions of the Miss Dior and Miss Dior Chérie (eau de parfum) fragrances in 2011, renaming Miss Dior Original and simplifying Miss Dior Chérie to simply Miss Dior.
Demachy is known for his passion for his métier, and is inspired by both the producers and the women and men who wear his creations. A great traveler, a music lover, and an admirer of feminine beauty, Demachy continuously strives to delight and surprise, thereby perpetuating Monsieur Dior’s visionary legacy: “Always do your best possible and never settle for less”.
In 2021, Demachy was the star of Nose, a documentary about fragrances that focuses on the complete cycle of creating a perfume, from the people who plant the raw material to those who use the fragrance. The film emphasizes the international coordination needed to build an aroma like Sauvage and shares credit with farmers and growers around the world.
François Demachy is a true perfumery master, whose passion and creativity have shaped the world of fragrances as we know it today.
