Second try of the Penhaligon’s Portraits 2016 collection. Same as before: supreme quality and a very feminine scent. But watch out, since both (the Duke and this Duchess) revolve around rose, the similarity is strong. And between us: if I thought the first one was unisex, this one is too, and even closer to the ‘masculine’ standard—maybe it’s just me? The opening is a delicious rose that turns sweet in minutes, like Elie Saab Le Parfum. Then it evolves into something soapy. What I like most is that all four notes are noticeable together and separately, each with its own shine. The perfumer is Christophe Raynaud, the genius behind Paco Rabanne’s One Million. Verdict: Approved.

Nice fragrance, but not for me. On my skin, only the rose shows through: fresh, sparkling, cheerful, and spring-like. The wood doesn’t give it body; it stays light and linear. It lasts about 5 hours with moderate projection. If you like fresh rose, it’s ideal.

  • On the skin, it’s a fresh, sweet rose at first. It didn’t disappoint, but it didn’t wow me either. Then it fades quickly, leaving a very subtle soapy trail. To be fair, on the other wrist I’m wearing Bedwitching Yasmine, which is another world in terms of intensity. Compared to it, this smells more versatile for daytime or for younger girls, while Yasmine is dark and potent (though its longevity disappointed me; maybe it improves when worn at home rather than in a store).

  • Dama Incognita

Musked rose with a barely perceptible wood note; nothing ugly, but it doesn’t stand out from the crowd.

  • I tested this several times with the sample set. It’s just a clean rose, nothing special for me. Nice, but nothing that motivates me to spend 240 euros. The performance on my skin wasn’t good either; after 30 minutes it’s skin scent, and the longevity is a joke for the price. It doesn’t last me even an hour and a half; I think it’s the shortest-lasting one I’ve tried. Maybe it works better on someone else…

Any rose perfume is better than this. Minimum durability, less than an hour. Clean rose scent. Not worth it for the high price.

  • Beautiful, with high-quality ingredients, but extremely short-lived. I have it as a gift, but I don’t recommend buying it due to its poor performance.

  • Boring. A typical, generic rose scent, neither good nor bad. It smells fine, but the price is way too high, and there are more complex and interesting rose perfumes at much lower prices.

  • I liked the aroma, very pleasant if you like roses, with a delicious musky touch. The bad part is it didn’t last long for me. I agree that for the price I expected more; it’s strange because others from this house usually last longer. It’s a pleasant but simple and short-lived scent for the cost.

  • I loved the scent; very pleasant if you like rose, with a musky touch that makes it delicious. The downside is it didn’t last long. I agree that for the price, I expected more—it’s strange because other fragrances from this house usually last longer. It’s a very pleasant but simple aroma, and not durable enough for the cost.

  • A fairly classic musky rose, nothing special in my opinion. Longevity wasn’t terrible on my skin, but it seems excessively simple to justify the price, even if you like the scent (which I don’t). There are similar designer roses for much less.

Penhaligon’s story for ‘The Coveted Duchess Rose’ is curious: an unhappy duchess seeking fun and unrestrained romance. The bottle is an interpretation of a ‘vixen,’ an attractive woman who knows how to play with her seductive power. To me, it smells nice and relaxing, perhaps a bit too simple at first. It opens with mandarin and ginger, soon revealing the star rose. As it develops on the skin, it becomes a warm floral bouquet with woods and musk, where the rose captures its entire cycle: from fresh bud to withering. It’s a dark red rose, a symbol of love and feminine beauty, with a touch more elegant than subtly perverse, just like its inspiration. Christophe Raynaud clearly didn’t force oriental notes. It turns out beautiful but more elegant than simple. Medium longevity on my skin.

  • That formula so copied by other brands here works perfectly: fresh, elegant, strong rose, fine musk, and woods with a citrus touch at the start. It reminds me of one of Floraiku’s that I can’t quite place now. Good fragrance, very feminine, but the price is insane, way too high for what you get.
