Descripción
The Dandy by Penhaligon's is a spicy woody olfactory creation designed for men and women. This new fragrance, launched in 2024, was crafted by perfumer Fabrice Pellegrin. Its olfactory pyramid unfolds with a vibrant combination of raspberry, cider, and bergamot in the top notes; the heart reveals the warmth of oak, whisky, and cedar; while the base settles into the elegance of patchouli and Clearwood.

I like it. As soon as you apply it, you get the whiskey (that Baraonda kind, just less intense than Nasomatto’s) mixed with what seems to be davana. At first, the luminous touch of cider is brief; then the raspberry comes through with the whiskey. Throughout, those fougère notes are noticeable (the same lactone, with Iso E Super and cedar). The patchouli, when dry, reminds me of Diptyque’s Tempo. There’s also ambroxan, but not too strong. It’s fairly linear but pleasant. I see it as a cold-weather, nighttime, masculine scent, though I’d love to smell it on a woman. I understand comparisons to Bentley Intense or a certain Halfeti, though they aren’t the same. It also smells very much like Tom Ford, with a structure and behavior similar to Oud Wood. I don’t think it will be a huge seller or remembered as one of the brand’s best, but it’s not a disaster, and the current rating (3.51) doesn’t do it justice.
Pleasant, but it doesn’t add anything new to the Penhaligon’s house. Totally dispensable. It will likely be discontinued soon, so if you can, grab it 😉
Personally, I like it. Upon spraying, you get the whiskey paired with what seems to be davana. At first, there’s a brief luminous touch of cider, then the raspberry blends with the whiskey. Throughout the dry down, those fougère notes stand out, along with Iso E Super and cedar. The patchouli reminds me of Diptyque’s when dry. There’s also ambroxan, but not too strong. Although it’s unisex, to me the scent leans a bit masculine; still, I liked it more than I thought. The whiskey, wood, and patchouli notes are very apparent, but they soften as it dries down. The longer it sits, the more I enjoy the aroma; I consider it wearable and easy for most people to like; it’s not overwhelming.
Although it’s marketed as unisex, to me it leans more towards a man’s scent. Still, I liked it more than I expected. The whiskey, wood, and patchouli notes are very prominent at first, but they soften as it dries down. Over time, I find I like the aroma even more. It’s wearable and easy for most people to enjoy; it’s not overwhelming.
This doesn’t smell unisex; it smells like a mature man just stepping out of a tavern. The longevity is excellent on my skin, but honestly, it’s a bit heavy, not very clean, and quite challenging.
There’s nothing unisex about this; it smells like a mature man just stepping out of a tavern. It has excellent longevity, at least on my skin, but it’s heavy, not very clean, and quite challenging overall.
Sometimes it’s not you finding the perfume, but the perfume finding you. It happened to me in Edinburgh, at a random barbershop I entered just to get a haircut. Afterward, I saw some bottles in a corner, and out of curiosity, I asked the barber if they also sold perfumes. “No,” he said with a smile, “Penhaligon’s lends them to us to pamper our clients.” Turns out, the man was as obsessed with fragrances as I am. He let me try several options, and without even needing a spray, he appeared: a true dandy in liquid form. Whiskey in the opening note and me, in Scotland… coincidence? I don’t think so. It was love at first sniff. The best part came later: the way the whiskey and raspberry unfolded, with that sweet, intoxicating contrast, left me hypnotized. I wore just a minimal application on my neck and couldn’t stop sniffing, like a hound in love. I went to the official Edinburgh store… and, of course, it was out of stock. I tried many other fragrances, but none had that seductive magnetism. Already resigned, on my way to the airport, I walked into a luxury perfume shop… and there it was again, waiting for me, as if it knew I’d be passing by. I tried it once more and was completely won over, with no escape. The final wink of fate: a 25% discount. Obviously, it came with me. Now it rests in my collection, occupying a place of honor, like a memory of an inevitable encounter.
Sometimes it’s not you looking for the perfume, but the perfume finding you. In Edinburgh, at a random barbershop, the barber gave me a free sample of Penhaligon’s. The moment I smelled it, I got a pure whiskey note straight out of Scotland. It was love at first sniff.
