L'Instant de Guerlain for Homme by Guerlain is a woody-spicy fragrance for men. This composition was launched in 2004 and was created by nose Beatrice Piquet. The top notes unfold with lemon, anise, bergamot, grapefruit, and jasmine; the heart reveals cocoa, patchouli, sandalwood, tea, cedar, and lavender; while the base notes settle with natural musk, hibiscus seeds, and elemi resin.

This fragrance is gorgeous, refined, and a great buy; it’s among the best from Guerlain… my last 4 purchases have restored my faith: Lalique White, Hommage a l’Homme, L’Instant, and Vetiver by Guerlain. (Sometimes I like to buy just based on what I’ve read, get home, open it, and smell it, then compare what I read with what I perceive).
Excellent fragrance; cocoa, anise, and patchouli are the stars. Anise and citrus mark the opening, overshadowing the cocoa a bit. Then the cocoa comes into play to accompany the rest of the wear. At 20 minutes, it acquires that citrus/bitter touch, perhaps due to the mix of grapefruit with cedar or tea. Very good projection and longevity; it has a classy elegant touch, and I don’t see it as youthful. The sweet touch of cocoa and patchouli gives it a good trail and longevity without becoming annoying like others in the same style. Simply one of the best purchases I’ve made.
Unfortunately, I couldn’t find the L’Instant Extreme and tried this one instead. I thought it would be strong and unpleasant like other scents from the brand (e.g., Vetiver), but the truth is, it didn’t disgust me. Of course, it’s for someone older or more formal; it’s not intrusive. It’s a more balanced perfume where nothing dominates, but you can notice the soft, non-sour cocoa, a bit of citrus, and patchouli. I see it as a good option for those who like classic scents and won’t offend younger people.
What more can I say about this marvel that hasn’t already been said? Since I got a bottle of L’Instant, it’s my go-to perfume, rain or shine. I feel identified with its scent and style; I love it on my skin and it makes me laugh. I adore this EDT, but I try to be objective: at first, the citrus is noticeable, especially the grapefruit. Anise also stands out at the start, in a balanced, intense, and subtle mix, never cloying. As it dries down, the soft cocoa takes shape, giving a special harmonious touch, elegant and almond-like, warm without being sweet. The woody base continues to delight for hours. The trail isn’t excessive, though you can always spray a little more since it never bothers. You want to smell it all the time; it’s not tiring at all. In short, it’s a delicious, pleasant, intimate fragrance that is both classic and modern, formal and cosmopolitan. A piece worthy of collecting and using always.
A marvel. I don’t smell as much cocoa as citrus. In the Extreme version, the delicious cocoa definitely takes charge. We could say this ‘L’Instant’ is the ‘sporty’ version of the Extreme. Absolutely recommended, even blind if you like citrus, woody, and spicy fragrances. Longevity and projection are top-notch.
Wow! I see almost everyone has good things to say about this. In my opinion, it smells great, lasts long, and has an insane trail, but it definitely smells very ‘lady-like’. Well, I’m 27 (not a kid, haha) and I think (maybe without basis) it’s for people 35+. My bottle has about 50ml and I haven’t used it in almost a year 🙁 and I don’t plan to use it again… Greetings and blessings. (**If anyone shares or disagrees with my opinion, let me know via MP here on Fragrántica**)
First off, I own both Lidg and Lidge. I prefer the EDT over the EDP, and this is my signature, my number one. It has everything I’m looking for. It starts citrusy/anise (I love citrus, which is why I prefer Lidg, as it has more citrus than Lidge). Then the cocoa takes over the rhythm of the ‘perfect symphony,’ with floral touches, woods, and tea (I swear I can smell it, or maybe I’m imagining it, but I think it’s there). These are secondary to the heart of patchouli and cocoa. The dry-down is divine: sandalwood, cocoa, and patchouli with a musk that gives an oily sensation. Longevity is 8/9 hours, trail is moderate. The only flaw is that the trail/projection is weak; it sticks to the skin quickly. BEWARE! I don’t want it to be a beast—that would take away its charm and versatility—but a little more projection would be nice. For me, it’s a 10.
As I mentioned before, it smells divine—very elegant and powerful without being overwhelming. The notes scream quality, though I think it’s for men over 35. I have a 50ml bottle if anyone wants to trade. Cheers!
It’s a gem. You can tell it smells different from the rest of my colleagues. It lasts long, covers other scents, and has a strong presence. Very masculine.
My first use was amazing and I loved it, but over time it started to feel a bit tedious. I wouldn’t recommend it for everyday wear; instead, save it for special occasions and winter.
At first, it gave me a little fear because in my head I saw an old man in a jacket, but then it turns delicious: citrus, woody, chocolatey, and almond-like. I adore it! Unbeatable quality. It’s not just another scent, nor is it for everyone; it’s the perfume to look elegant and distinguished without being loud.
L’Instant is pure Guerlain! It has that same clean, polished, and evolving essence as the Homme. If you like YSL Jazz or Givenchy Gentleman, you’ll find that same spirit of a great fragrance here. It’s super versatile, perfect for all year round. Although it resembles the Homme, it’s a worthy gem with unquestionable quality. My Guerlain top list: 1. Vetiver, 2. L’eau Boisée, 3. L’Instant (9.6/10).
This smells like the Vetiver from the same house: on its own, it doesn’t leave much to be desired, but it’s true to its style.
Incredible perfume! Fixation and longevity are 10/10, trail is average. It smells amazing: chocolate, citrus, sandalwood, woods, and green notes. Versatility is 9/10; I tested it twice in one day and loved it both times. Almost all of Guerlain’s scents are a showstopper.
Top-tier Guerlain fragrance: powdery citrus with a hint of cocoa and a woody-balsamic dry-down. Elemi resin, sandalwood, and musk blend perfectly with the citrus, keeping that timeless freshness à la Chanel, though the cocoa gives it its own stamp. I find that classic, distinguished vibe a bit much for my taste, but the result is brutal and worth it, especially for the quality and price. Rating: 7.5
Like other Guerlain fragrances, L’Instant has a classic vibe, which is key for me since it allows me to wear it in many situations. What I like most are the woody notes, the cocoa, and the patchouli; that combination gives it great character and distinction. Although it’s versatile, it does have a bit of a winter feel. Longevity and projection are very good. Overall, it’s a pretty decent fragrance for me.
I just walked out of a perfumery after testing scents, and the employee showed me the Guerlain L’Instant bottle, which I didn’t know about, and I was blown away. It’s spectacular and I love it. I’ve been wearing it on my skin for an hour now, and it’s still radiating that delicious scent. It sounds quite masculine to me, but it has a sweet touch that complements it perfectly. I hope it lasts a long time because the aroma is splendid.
Guerlain L’Instant EDP (2016): It’s denser, spicier, less fresh and sweet, even a bit sharp in the opening. It’s less versatile and balanced than the EDT. While the dry-down improves compared to the opening, I still think the EDT is better and more balanced; both my nose and those around me prefer it, even though the EDP projects and lasts longer. Both have class and are all-seasoners, but their versatile nature takes a bit of the edge off in specific moments. The scent is original and delicious (especially the EDT). The EDP is good, but the EDT surpasses it and is perfect. Ratings: Opening—EDT 9.5/10, EDP 7/10; Dry-down—EDT 9.5/10, EDP 9/10; Projection—EDT 7.5/10, EDP 8.5/10; Longevity—EDT 7/10, EDP 9/10.
Rain or cloudy skies, this is the fragrance you can’t be without. It has impeccable presence and a trail that feels like it’s from another world. Highly recommended for this weather because with it, even demons and aliens run away from your path. Ultra-recommended!
Guerlain L’Instant EDT (2016): It’s one of a kind; nothing compares to it. It sits between fresh (fresher than the EDP) and spicy-woody, with a sweet anise-chocolate note that smells like coconut. It’s not heavy; quite the opposite, I find it exquisite: perfect balance, gorgeous opening and dry-down, top-tier ingredients, natural scent, and decent projection and longevity. It’s a distinguished all-rounder, classy enough for any season or time of day. Its versatility is huge, though that means it doesn’t stand out as much in specific settings compared to fresher summer scents or more seductive night fragrances. It’s delicious, incredibly balanced, and a true masterpiece.
A delicious, elegant, and fresh fragrance that combines sweet notes of cocoa, citrus, and flowers with oriental notes like patchouli and sandalwood, and a very present anise. I feel it as semiformal with a sensual touch.
Well done on L’Instant, I like it for that classic cut: it can be formal, sensual, or intimate, for enjoying with a partner, family, or an afternoon with the kids in the park or square, as they mention an all-terrain vehicle. When I bought it, I was looking for exactly that, and I’m happy to have achieved a certain uniformity with the environment every time I wear it. Longevity is good on my skin, all day, over 12 hours. Moderate sillage, not intrusive, but you feel it with movement. It doesn’t get muted by other fragrances, even very strong or sweet ones; three to four sprays are enough. I don’t feel it changes much; I feel it’s very linear. I think it stands out better in the afternoon/evening, it looks great with cloudy days, but certainly it can bring something good in sunny times. I remember using it in December (winter in Mexico but with scorching sun) at a garden party, late afternoon/evening, and it was perfect all the way through. I definitely like it, I felt exact. I get the impression I had felt it before, years ago, in the nineties, because somehow it takes me back to them. I don’t use it much, but I like it more each time. Why? Probably because it is very versatile, punctual, brief, of the moment, of l’Instant.
An intimate fragrance, for personal enjoyment above all, but also for a partner or family circle. The opening is intense, with anise as the main actor, masterfully accompanied by citrus. Then it evolves like the caress of someone showing us sincere affection. Here the protagonist is cocoa, tenderly accompanied by sandalwood and lavender. It closes with cocoa (which still persists) surrounded by woody notes and a soft musk holding that warm caress. Wonderful fragrance, long-lasting with moderate sillage. Among my favorites.
It’s no longer available in malls, it’s discontinued, maybe in independent perfumeries or Amazon. I tried it once in a mall at the Guerlain stand; the saleswoman is my friend and told me I could spray as much as I wanted from an almost-full tester bottle. I put 4 sprays on one arm, and the opening is very typical of Guerlain. Within minutes, an exquisite lemon appears, not too creamy, more acidic and fresh, and you notice the grapefruit. It seemed curious to me that the citrus notes appeared as if they were heart notes. Until then, the projection was good, at a meter. A friend came, smelled it, and wanted to try it on his skin. My friend sprayed his neck, 6 sprays, and wow, what a delight. We said goodbye; before leaving, I picked up the bottle and doused myself in perfume, about 8 more sprays on neck and chest. Total, courtesy of Guerlain, we went for ice-cold beers, full May, heat at its peak in Guadalajara. The sillage dropped abruptly upon drying. To the point that while we enjoyed the beers, it was the scent of a fine cream on the skin, extremely exquisite: cocoa, wood, soft resin, wow, very similar to Dior Homme Intense and Valentino Uomo. Despite the heat, it was never heavy, but disappointing the longevity and sillage: skin-level after an hour. Comments on how it was possible to have no sillage after dousing ourselves in such a short time; at three hours, it was a subtle, creamy memory. I don’t know how the parfum or extreme version behaves, but this is a ‘sigh of a teenage lover’. Removed from ‘want to buy’.
I’m writing a brief review because I’ve been wearing it for about 5 hours now, much longer than other reviews, and I’m giving my own opinion with the perfume on while writing. It’s a fragrance I really like; I feel it in moments with a faint air of some fresh baby cologne. I agree it starts very potent and then becomes more for personal enjoyment, but that doesn’t prevent people passing by from commenting. So far, I feel it on my skin, fresh, warm, and cozy. I sprayed about 5 sprays on my neck, chest, and beard; it lasts longer on hair. Longevity is over 5 hours and I still smell it. Projection is moderate, leaning intimate after a few hours. Special for the day and perhaps cool afternoons/evenings.
A jewel of the industry! A masterpiece by Guerlain. I met it years ago in the Duty Free in Sao Paulo. Since I fly a lot, I have a weakness for fragrances and access to airport shops. I took the tester and sprayed it on. When I got on the plane, the pilots (connoisseurs) asked me what perfume I was wearing; they found it delicious, just like I did. Many people have asked me about it and bought it. It’s very masculine, elegant, protocol-driven, high-society. Created decades ago and never discontinued. There are people who have never felt its name. It’s not mass-market. I use it for winter or cool autumn. It has aplomb; you don’t need to over-spray. RECOMMENDATION: TEST IT FIRST ON YOUR FOREARM and let it settle with your skin’s pH. Range: from age 35. REITERATE: IT IS A MASTERPIECE, NOT ONLY OF GUERLAIN BUT OF THE INDUSTRY.
A fragrance of extremely high quality and great work by Beatrice Piquet, creator of Lady Million, who plays in a different league than Guerlain. L’INSTANT POUR HOMME embodies all the excellence of the house and French haute parfumerie. I detect jasmine, grapefruit, bergamot, patchouli, and cocoa, but none stand out separately; instead, they create a drunken, balanced totum. It’s sweet without being cloying, delicate without being affected, striking without being overwhelming, deep without being heavy. It smells of luxury, sophistication, an aristocrat’s dressing room, the Court of Versailles, Faubourg Saint-Honoré. This is how the Vicomte de Valmont smells. It’s timeless, surviving trends. Medium sillage and high longevity. The problem with sillage today is common: synthetic formulas haven’t found fixation for components banned by IFRA like ambergris or animal musk. They probably will, but users don’t want fainting spells like with Poison or DUNE from the 80s, nor perfumes only for ourselves by pressing our noses to the skin. With L’INSTANT POUR HOMME, you enjoy its aroma for hours in an experience close to ecstasy. My rating is 9. An instant pour toujours.
I like it. It starts citrusy-anise and moves into a wonderful patchouli-cocoa combo with a touch of sandalwood. Slightly musky finish. It’s lighter than LIDGE, therefore more versatile. I stick with LIDGE. Ideal for spring, autumn, and winter, day and night. Long-lasting with moderate sillage.
At first, it smells intensely of anise, with noticeable patchouli and alcohol. I can’t stand it at the beginning. After an hour, once it settles, it becomes pleasant, subtly sweet and woody. That’s when it’s magnificent. I think it’s very feminine, something I adore in men’s colognes. If they had sold it for women, it would have been a hit. I can imagine it better on someone like Sofia Vergara than on a man. Only for special formal occasions. Recommended, but the first whiff might scare you away.
L’Instant smells very refined, perfect for dates or important meetings. It starts with lemon mixed with cocoa and anise; those last two notes give it a unique touch that reminded me of Play-Doh clay when I first tried it. The cocoa doesn’t taste like chocolate, but something drier and raw, yet exquisite. Then the woody notes emerge, giving it body. It’s an intimate fragrance, for personal use or with a partner, with good longevity: about 8 hours, a bit more in winter.
Just to say that if the sky smells like anything, it must smell like this marvel.
I LOVE IT!!! ELEGANCE AND SEDUCTION IN A BOTTLE.
One of the best scents I’ve experienced, one of the few that stands out in all its phases: the citrus opening (I perceive mostly a very natural lemon) to the woody dry-down with that perfectly assembled cocoa note. It’s like listening to a well-tuned orchestra, where every instrument has its voice without drowning out the others. It reminds me of another Guerlain jewel: Heritage. They are two fine fragrances, without harshness; although L’Instant seems more modern to me, and I imagine it will appeal to a wider audience. The performance isn’t excessive; it projects discretely on the skin, though the longevity reaches up to 6-7 hours. It’s not easy to find a fragrance so elegant, balanced, and comfortable. Especially that it smells SO GOOD, and even less so for the price L’Instant has. I take off my hat and bow twice.
A unique and impressive fragrance for men. Elegant (like a fine mechanical watch on your wrist) and very easy to like, housed in a beautiful Art Deco bottle. Although it’s not for everyone, I personally love this liquid gold and I’m glad to have the vintage EDT. L’Instant is well-blended: it opens with a beautiful cocoa and tea accord. These two notes come out strong and blend softly. I usually drink cheap tea because I save my money for perfumes, vinyls, and travel. The tea here seems like a high-quality Japanese green matcha. The anise follows close behind, ready to inject a sweet licorice note into the chocolate. This bitter-sweet tandem works well throughout the fragrance’s life. A woody earthy note stands out over time, coexisting with the chocolate and anise. It’s a top-tier gourmand environment, not edible. A very beautiful offer from Guerlain, truly timeless, noble, and elegant, not smelled in every corner. Clear recommendation: the EDT is enough if you don’t demand more power; the duration is correct. Otherwise, opt for the modern EDP, one of the few cases where the reformulation didn’t burden the fragrance.
Out of all the L’Instant versions I’ve tried (vintage, current EDT, and EDP), this is undoubtedly the best, with greater longevity and performance. Unfortunately, it’s not easy to get anymore. The vintage is denser, darker, and more potent; the new one is more citrusy, bright, subtle, and intimate. This perfume would undoubtedly make my list of the 5 best masculines ever made. Update 04/29/22: Trying to be objective, I have to retract my previous review, as it was based on the memory of a moment (around 2018) where I probably hadn’t smelled as many perfumes. As I try new scents, others appear that set a higher bar for projection and longevity. What I want to emphasize is that this vintage version (batch 2013) doesn’t smell much different from the current one, nor does it surpass it in longevity. That said, the scent itself is one of the best. It’s ideal, due to its subtlety, for intimate encounters.
L’Instant de Guerlain is peculiar. It’s bright, sweet, and dashing. Sophisticated and magical. Performance is moderate now that it’s summer, but in winter it should shine with intensity and is still incredible. I waited almost two years to find a decent vintage deal. It gives me an Opium Pour Homme vibe but sweeter and more chocolatey. It’s more cheerful and versatile, a guaranteed blind buy.
L’Instant Pour Homme, what lovely memories of this beautiful scent. I used it until I squeezed every drop from my 100ml bottle; for me, it was the favorite fragrance for years. Then I became a bit of a scent promiscuous, but that’s how it is: the good stuff never goes out of style. Now it’s hard to find, but with so many reformulations out there, I fear it has changed. That happened to me with Adolfo Domínguez’s Agua Fresca; it’s not even a distant cousin anymore… what a pity!
A warm, balanced fragrance, never overwhelming. It’s discreet, yet noticeable; it has great class. It opens with citrus but quickly moves toward woods and spices, always softly. The cocoa note is perceptible, but far from being a loud gourmand. There’s something of the ‘guerlinade’ that makes it more attractive. Recommended if you’re looking for discretion, elegance, and quality. Ideal for autumn and spring, though it works very well in winter too. Correct performance, moderate projection. In short, rich, round, and elegant, as a Guerlain should be. Review of the original formula. 8/10.
This is Guerlain modern at its best: it blends the house’s classic style (that unmistakable citrus opening over an amber base) with a contemporary sensibility (a warm, powdery cocoa that brushes against gourmand without fully crossing the line). Béatrice Piquet did something special with this 2004 masculine. The citrus opening with anise and lavender is luminous, but the star is the cocoa and patchouli combination. Together, they create an earthy, chocolatey, warm, and amber profile, intensified by the elemi resin in the base. There’s also a hint of lapsang souchong tea leaves, adding a light smokiness with a peaty touch. The result is bright, warm, slightly boozy, and creamy. The patchouli connects with the floral-musk base of hibiscus, leaving a long, natural dry-down. It’s light on the skin but present and sophisticated, incredibly versatile: it looks just as good with a suit as with jeans. My favorite Guerlain masculine of the 21st century. A jewel.
Pure class and distinction. The man who has arrived. It is pure elegance. 10/10.
