To me, it smells almost exactly like the EDP; both have their fruity and almond touches, however I feel the Extreme is a bit more casual, jovial, and informal. It feels more unisex with a slight lean towards masculine due to the tobacco and leather notes. It would probably suit autumn days and nights better, and the EDP for winter, however, either could cover both seasons without issue. I feel the longevity is a bit shorter than the EDP, around 6-7 hours, and it’s not intrusive at all. On the contrary, like the whole Guerlain L’homme series, they smell notes of excellent quality and sophistication. I would recommend trying it before buying unless you are familiar with the line, especially with the EdT and EDP.
This isn’t a perfume, it’s a work of art. Longevity: 24 hours passed and I can still smell it on my skin. The most interesting part is that the more time passes, the more the tobacco accentuates, a true delight.
Reminds me a lot of Le Male, but much better thanks to that powerful cherry note this fragrance has. Sweet, an aroma like the 90’s, a delight.
Rich, I love this fragrance. Guerlain Ideal is one of my favorite lines.
Exotic fragrance, what beauty, what different, what magnetism. A safe bet for a special night. Magnificent.
Simply exquisite. I bought it blind, guided by reviews from this forum and YouTube, and the surprise was delightful. It’s very different from what I’m used to (don’t judge, I’m 25 and have little experience). I’m not trained to describe facets, but I easily catch two notes: the plum in the opening (though it smells a bit like syrup) and the tobacco in the dry down. Despite many liking it, I don’t recommend it for young people. I ended up gifting it to my dad; I loved the scent but didn’t feel comfortable wearing it myself. Fortunately, he loved it so much he uses it almost daily, and every time he passes by leaving that trail of plum, I can’t help but think: ‘you smell so good.’ In conclusion, I recommend it for ages 35+, cold climates, and casual or special occasions, without reaching full elegance.
I had no expectations despite favorable YouTube reviews. I thought it would be redundant with the L’homme Ideal EdP. However, I tried it in-store and had to eat my prejudice. Of course, it shares continuity with the EdP, but the tobacco and plum notes become present, moving away from the almond and cherry of the EdP. Without being a beast (the ‘à l’Extreme’ name is a bit misleading), it’s an oriental perfume masterpiece, with a tobacco note that follows you all the time. It’s totally addictive. It’s for personal wear, projects moderately, and lasts a workday but no more. It’s a delight that even today, on a fresh spring day, is enjoyable. I’ll use it up before the heat arrives and have to park it until autumn. Highly recommended.
I bought it online since the stores only had testers, and the disappointment was terrible upon arrival: new bottle, black cap, gray label, new formula… It’s too obvious that it’s been downgraded; it lasts much less and has zero projection. Watch out, as they’ve touched the whole range and changed the packaging, my batch is only two months old. If anyone else experiences this, please comment.
I love this L’homme Ideal line. I tried the new Extreme bottle and would summarize it as exquisite almond, plum, and tobacco, with a very intense opening and heart. It smells elegant, with great projection and longevity. I detect that for Guerlain, the ideal man isn’t strictly masculine but plays with unisex vibes, sometimes leaning slightly feminine. It has huge presence and is perfect for cold weather (not recommended in heat as it becomes overwhelming and dizzying). On my skin, it lasts over 9 hours. However, I stick with the EDT because I consider it more versatile and less heavy.
Smells luxurious and commanding. I gifted it for Father’s Day, and amidst all the close greetings, the ‘you smell so good’ compliments were constant from both men and women; in fact, it’s the one that has received the most spontaneous praise. Unlike others that overwhelm or cause olfactory fatigue after many sprays, this one is effortless. You can really tell Guerlain’s niche quality here. Tremendous fragrance!
The best in the Ideal line, and that’s saying a lot; it’s incredible they’re going to discontinue it…
Definitely a delight; it’s the L’Homme Ideal EDT with steroids: a sensual, addictive, masculine fragrance with above-average performance. The only catch is it’s for cold weather, below 18 degrees.
Very tasty, slightly different; for me, it boils down to almonds at the start, then cinnamon, and finally soft leather. A sweet and woody aroma, perhaps with a subtle tobacco. But what a huge disappointment; I bought it blind with all the hype. I received a 2021 batch with a new black cap bottle that isn’t worth it due to the performance. I searched everywhere and don’t know if it’s been reformulated or what, but after 4 hours I have to press my nose to my arm to smell it. Reviews talk about 10 hours of longevity, but on my skin, it’s nothing. It’s a shame because it smells great and is a bit pricier than average. I wouldn’t recommend it.
The red cap version has good performance, but the new black cap presentation does not. I imagine it must have been reformulated. Seems too soon since it came out fresh in 2020. The red cap version is still available.
Seriously, do you think this has tobacco? What an insult. It’s just a mix of the EDP and EDT. I don’t get what makes it ‘different,’ plus it’s expensive and projects very little. This fragrance is for a candy factory and kids. Smell L’Homme, Polo Green, and Havana, and you’ll see what real tobacco smells like.
Regarding longevity, I wore it on Saturday, and today I smelled my shirt before washing it, and it still projects quite well. As for the scent, the tobacco is subtle, and the almond is too, but both are excellent.
I thought the EDP was unbeatable, but this Extreme silenced my doubts. The combination of tobacco leaf, plum, and that characteristic almond from the line makes this perfume a fruity and spicy delicacy. It smells very original and doesn’t rely on that overused vanilla note. In my opinion, it’s a more masculine version of the EDP. Without a doubt, it’s my favorite flanker and one of the top designer fragrances 🙂
Delicious fragrance, sweet without being cloying. I’m surprised they don’t list cherry in the notes because, to my nose, it smells like cherry liqueur with vanilla—rich and with great performance.
My favorite fragrance right now. Sensual, elegant, sweet, and masculine. The blend of almond, plum, cinnamon, tobacco, and leather makes it a gem. I have the pre-reform batch, and the performance is decent: 7-8 hours on skin, projects well at arm’s length for about 3 hours, then settles closer to the skin, with the last hours being very intimate. It doesn’t go unnoticed, everyone likes it, and it’s neither invasive nor cloying. It’s very pleasant, but its Achilles’ heel is versatility; it’s better for cold weather, suitable only for special occasions in summer, and maybe two sprays max (there are always better options for heat). But like all L’Homme Ideal fragrances, it’s distinctive, with the plum and tobacco giving it a more masculine and elegant development.
The opening is a bit aggressive, with that bitter almond blending with pink pepper and bergamot for about 10 minutes. Then the cinnamon, plum, and heliotrope take over, leaving an aniseed, spicy, and creamy trail that smells like vanilla and fruit, very similar to the EDP. Later, the leather and tobacco notes kick in, adding a lot of masculinity and sensuality. Finally, that sour and spicy tobacco note returns; I would have preferred it softer and more balsamic. Overall, it’s a top-quality fragrance, very addictive in the mid-stage, and classy, though the EDP remains my favorite.
Powerful opening but after five minutes it takes something super refined; you could say this is niche because its scents are excellent, it has a super fine chocolate that’s not cloying, an ultra-soft cinnamon, exquisite almond, I dare to say a leather but delicate. I bought this fragrance blind and honestly it impressed me more than usual.
Very good fragrance, with all the style of the classic; I love the pink pepper accords.
So far, the Eau de Parfum seemed the best in the line, but I think this Extrême beats it. It’s a pleasure for the nose, one of those fragrances you can’t stop smelling.
Tested with two sprays dry. Simply a masterpiece. Like most of this brand, it denotes a quality superior to commercial or designer scents. What I perceive is a classy, elegant, and youthful scent. It’s the typical one I’d wear for an important event at 27, but like any Guerlain, I also see it for someone older, although in that case I’d use something else. Cold weather. As for the scent in notes and without being an expert, I notice a lot of pink pepper. Sweet, slightly powdery, and sparkling. Simply, I love it.
Wow, I’m impressed, unfortunately with a bad impression. Quick review: the new version with the black cap and grey label is incredibly diluted. I don’t recommend buying it unless you find it at a huge discount. Today I opened this one, luckily I bought it at a considerable discount. Honestly, I remember the original version (2020) having a great scent and acceptable performance; I knew it back then and loved it, but I couldn’t buy it. Finally, a few weeks ago I had this fragrance in my hands and was very disappointed by its zero performance. A fragrance like this was one where you’d spray it three times and smell it all day, with clothes smelling for several days more. Unfortunately, Guerlain’s decisions, like many other houses, have been to super-dilute everything and sell us heavily discounted colognes. Is it worth describing the scent? You get about 40 minutes with 8 sprays, and what remains afterward is a scent stuck to the skin/clothes that you can barely smell when bringing your nose close or creating airflow. It hurts to say it about a house like Guerlain, which used to have niche quality and although they didn’t have extraordinary performance, it was very acceptable, and they sold us the idea that a luxury fragrance should be discreet. Well, they’ve gone too far with discretion. I recommend the classic EDT in any case, although they also wrecked the formula (in ingredients and performance); overapply it, it projects a bit more, and lasts vaguely perceptible for about 5 hours. How bad that we now have to choose between the lesser evil and not the best. Extreme? Eau de Parfum? No. Eau de Cologne.
Dilutions in perfumery are, frankly, insulting. I don’t own this fragrance, but I’ve tested it several times. Gentlemen, its orange-red hue has become practically transparent, and the performance has followed the same downward trend. What’s going on? Perhaps it’s consumers being pushed out of established scents due to a lack of ingredients or new regulations, in favor of other novelties that are 30-50% more expensive. There’s no other explanation. Guerlain has been my favorite brand. What I’ve seen over the last six months is truly lamentable. The problem is that in certain fragrances, Guerlain feels like a true mutilation, but it’s becoming widespread across the industry.
Today, on things people rave about that are absolutely overrated: L’Homme Idéal Extrême by Guerlain. At first, it’s fine—fruity, almond-like, slightly boozy—but as it dries down, it smells aggressively of plums and like an old cologne with notes of tobacco, soft leather, and plum sweetness. It almost feels more feminine than masculine; it reminds me of an Uruguayan basketball game with a bunch of older folks playing.
From the L’Homme Ideal family, this is the one that suits me the least. It has the same base style but is fruitier and sweeter. Plus, the performance is terrible.
Beast mode for dates in fall and winter, versatile for both casual and formal settings without any pretentious elegance. Thanks to knowing what they were doing, I picked up three bottles of the first version with the red cap (2020 and 2021 batches). Total hit.
Strong opening, but dries down to a sweet, fresh scent with a very masculine tobacco note. Perfect for cool nights, fall, and winter; avoid wearing it in summer as it becomes annoying and suffocating.
I smelled it today and had to buy it. What a rich perfume. It has a mature scent that makes you want to wear it every day. The almond note at the start is strong and delicious, and the touch of tobacco with bergamot gives it an incredible twist. It’s perfect for winter, autumn, and those cold nights. Without a doubt, I’d wear it to see my girlfriend or at uni when I have a presentation. It’s one of those perfumes that smell of maturity and security.
I tried to buy the red bottle, but I couldn’t and had to get the reformulation. An exquisite aroma with such mediocre performance that it seems insulting, especially coming from a house as expensive as Guerlain. If you can get the red bottle, go for it headfirst; if not, think twice. It lasts 2 hours for me.
A quite pleasant perfume; personally, I really like the opening with powerful leather and almond. On the drying down side, it’s somewhat fruity with the cedar notes. In my opinion, it’s a perfume that isn’t too hard to wear and definitely smells unique. The opening reminds me quite a bit of the Tom Ford Ombre Leather opening, but the drying down develops very differently; the fruity aspect gets my 10.
“Compliment machine!” For someone over 30, an exquisite fragrance for cold weather. It’s quite formal and projects wonderfully. Intense opening, as it dries down it becomes sweet and refined, without being cloying or vulgar. Recommended batch is the red cap (the new one doesn’t last as long or smell the same). Usage: special occasions. Occasion: formal, cold weather, nighttime. Fragrance: 4.5/5. Projection: 5/5. Longevity: around 6 hours on skin. Recommended for someone over 30, young people abstain (my recommendation)!
Second review after a year. *Review for the black cap/grey label formula. The opening improved quite a bit; oxidation/maceration did its job, so now it projects quite a bit right after spraying. What stands out most is a quite intense, citrus-fruity, and spicy aroma, something dense. This lasts approximately 20 minutes, and after that, the projection begins to drop drastically; now it’s less intense and honestly at this point I start to appreciate the aroma much more, the sweet spicy part comes out, and the very marked DNA of the IDEAL family begins to be noticed. It maintains a moderate sillage leaning towards low for another 40 minutes, and after that, the projection crashes; at one and a half hours, the scent is already very close to the skin or clothes, and unless you’ve applied more than 6 sprays and there’s a slight airflow, the scent comes off with difficulty. At two and a half hours, the sillage is practically non-existent; it’s only perceived if you press your nose against where the fragrance was applied. The aroma evolves quite fast. The new formula is made with planned obsolescence like most current European fragrances; the only improvement with oxidation was in the opening notes, otherwise, I get the impression that now, regardless of the concentration declared, we are being sold COLOGNES: wonderful during the first few minutes (opening notes), to give way to a super fast dry-down, so fast that at 3 or 4 hours what we’re left with is a residual aroma as if it had been applied several days, even weeks, ago. There is no logical way for a composition of this nature to disappear almost completely in a few hours, and to prove it, we have all the reviews from people mentioning that the first formula (red cap) lasted quite a bit and even the scent was better, of higher quality. I recommend NOT BUYING, or at least not buying at the official price which in Mexico hovers around $170. It’s very lamentable the current strategy of PREMATURE FORMULAS in the European industry. What is the goal?
I want to contradict people who trash this perfume for no apparent reason. It’s very well known among new enthusiasts that the topic of “reformulations” and the complaints they generate regarding these “changes” in perfumes and memories. “All the past is better” is the phrase that characterizes them. I’ve used the red-cap version and currently own the black-cap one; it’s not, and NEVER WAS, the beast that people infer from what they talk about. Scent? Excellent, Guerlain quality, clean, fruity, sweet, and spicy, which is VERY difficult to achieve in perfumes with this aromatic profile (VR Spicebomb Infrared ends up looking like a toy perfume compared to this, despite so many similarities). Longevity? 6-8 hours on skin, projecting powerfully (0.5 to 1 meter) for the first 2 hours with 8 sprays, and the longevity on clothes is brutal; I’ve heard it on sweaters two weeks later and it’s still present. There’s a lack of understanding among enthusiasts that this perfume is formulated for elegant, clean-cut men who don’t want to IMPOSE their scent on others, but rather be discovered upon entering close proximity. An ideal fragrance to distill class at a formal meeting or night date. Occasion? Due to the aromatic profile, it’s excellent for night outings as mentioned, however, even during the day, it doesn’t offend with 4 sprays; simply, the versatility found in a well-made perfume is magnificent. Don’t let yourself be carried away by bad reviews or the ambition that a perfume should last 24h+ and project to 5 meters for 20 of these because it’s desperate and bad taste; to understand this point, you need to try perfumes with Oud or very adherent aroma chemicals (like Arabian’s Tonka by Montale). In short: If you’re a tobacco fanatic and want an easy, rounded, well-made perfume with good performance, THIS is your scent, the best tobacco perfume in the “designer” category with an aromatic quality almost as good as great brands (Xerjoff, Amouage, etc.). If the initial performance doesn’t convince you, use it and wait a few months; it ALWAYS improves.
I bought it a year and a half ago (give or take) and what a surprise I got. I loved it so much. The quality in this house is masterful, just like everything Guerlain does, which for me is a “near-niche” brand, but I left it abandoned without realizing it; I bought other fragrances I also liked, and well… it happens to those of us with plenty of perfumes. It has gained character with oxidation and maceration, all that business, and I wore it this afternoon; I’ve had it on for 7 hours and it’s showing moderately well, considering that on me it used to last barely 5 hours on the skin. Definitely, Guerlain never fails. That’s what patience or forgetfulness is for in my case; sometimes it turns into a virtue… (well, the forgetfulness part, not so much).
A very good fragrance overall, with well-balanced notes and no excesses like in previous red-cap versions. The downside: performance. Thirty minutes of trail, then two or three hours of goodbye to the sillage and projection; there’s no more fragrance on the skin than what you detect by pressing your nose against it. For what it offers, it should cost half the list price. I don’t recommend buying it unless you have a decant and reapply every two hours to keep the fragrance alive, which, I repeat, is very pleasant to smell. If you want to smell great with wide sillage and longevity, the Habit Rouge Parfum from the same house is the best of all.
Batch 2021 with red cap. First impressions are identical to the Ideal EDT, but with some slightly bitter notes that make my nose perceive it as more adult and suitable for formal wear. On clothes, the scent changes a bit; I don’t know why, but as it dries, it resembles Spicebomb Infrared EDT a lot, which I also own.
It’s my second bottle, bought at the end of 2022, and I’m back for more today. This is a masterpiece: powerful, soft, sweet, spicy, leathery, and sexy, yet with that shy elegance I choose. It smells like a specialty perfumery, with fine, pure ingredients like the houses in Paris; notes of bee, honey, and almond. It’s ideal for the ideal man. Although I prefer Mediterranean and blue essences, sometimes the occasion and sophistication call for something less relaxed. I live in a warm, dry climate in inland Mexico, near the desert. I don’t wear it much in summer, but for a night out or a wedding, like if you live in the Bajío or Western region, it’s not too suffocating. I’ve even worn it at the beach, and the scent of almond, honey, and sea is unique. I work from home, have few social events, but this makes me feel like a bourgeois in the corporate niche of a family brand. I’m smelling it now, haha, and it brings back great memories; buying more. Peace and well!
