Perfumes bring back memories, people, and places. Sometimes the brand name doesn’t matter much, like with Oud Wood or Y, Bleu, but with Guerlain’s Épices Volées, it’s different. It’s a gem from their L’Art et la Matière collection. It reminds me of sculpture, like when you chip away excess marble to reveal the figure. Here, the spices are what’s been stolen—not golden apples, but coriander seeds, cardamom, and cloves from the Garden of the Hesperides. They blend with rose and patchouli: earthy, sweet, and dry. There’s a white wood base that circles back to the cardamom, creating a loop. It smells soapy yet rough, a striking contrast. It doesn’t follow a straight line; instead, it repeats like a canon. It’s meant to be enjoyed on your skin without projecting much, as if you’re rediscovering an old scent. It lingers on the skin all day, slowly and quietly, like ships setting sail from Ithaca. The spices are fine and delicate, brought to you by Guerlain as if you were strolling through the Louvre, seeing the tired Hercules Farnese after completing his impossible tasks.
