Spice Blend by Dior

Spice Blend, from Dior’s Private Line, reveals itself on my skin differently than the official notes. The opening, for my nose still in training, is dominated by ginger, followed by a vibrant pepper that awakens the senses. Then comes the rum, warm and enveloping, embraced by cinnamon with depth. The drydown rests on a woody base that balances everything. It lasts about six hours on my skin, which is pretty good. It’s an expensive perfume, definitely not one to buy blindly, but the quality is noticeable from the first moment.

I love it! Hyper-spiced and unique. Masculine cut, elegant, and sexy: it’s a bomb of spices soaked in liquor. Far from the original Spicebomb, with no vanilla or tobacco, and without that chemical touch. Here we have a quite dry perfume, no sweetness, with a beautiful trail. It deserves a spot in many collectors’ collections 🥃🫚🪵🍃

It’s a hidden gem. As soon as you smell the cap, if you have a trained nose, you can distinguish two types of pepper: on one hand, black, and on the other, pink, with more woody notes. As it develops, the nutmeg appears, joined by the pepper to make a great combo. Longevity and projection are very good. Price: 120€ for 30ml.

One of those Private Line scents that’s neither here nor there. Upon trying it, I could only detect tons of black and pink pepper; the first is spicy and numbing, the second with an obvious milky flavor. Truthfully, it’s wrapped in packaging that made me think of oud—a very soft, clean oud with its moldy, spicy, umami vibe. But nope, that’s not it. I racked my brain trying to find the base; I assumed it had a pinch of amber, that kind of woody, dry vanilla-scented one, even benjoin. But nothing. Now checking the notes, I see it’s the rum that tricked my nose into thinking it was the previous ones; undoubtedly, that dry, spicy tone with a boozy sweetness drives the composition alongside the peppers. Spice Blend appears overloaded and baroque if you let yourself be carried away by its ingredients, and indeed, it stings and numbs the mouth. However, it’s wrapped in a hazy, ghostly aura that suits it perfectly. It’s as if Dior took a masculine perfume from the 2010s, like a Bang or a Spicebomb—so broad and artificial—and endowed it with the texture of a fine Versailles boudoir, which they handle so well. And truly, that’s about it. It’s not ugly; it has a touch of sexiness and is elegant, refined in its aroma, but especially in its texture, which is divine. Spice Blend is something you’ve smelled before, just with a more sophisticated and expensive touch. Honestly, it doesn’t add much to the line where there are better options, but it’s funny that it’s an improved version of flashier perfumes. After a while, almost in the base notes, the nutmeg and cinnamon stand out, along with a laurel with vetiver hints, accords that remain hidden for most of the development. This is my favorite part: masculine but in a unisex style like Sycomore and those high-end spiced woods, very erotic. It also reminds me of one of those horrendous (sorry) Bvlgari scents loaded with brandy and cognac, but as I said before, well-made, calm, and whispering. Totally unisex; a man or a woman can wear it, both have an androgynous touch that makes you think of the opposite sex, though personally I lean more toward masculine. The ideal wearer… some fictional early 20th-century Russian revolutionary in a version of history where he’s a handsome conqueror defending himself from the cold wrapped in a cloak of fine cigarette scents, leather preservatives for beast tack, and old books. Curiously, this Spice Blend goes from “I absolutely don’t care” to “Hey, it smells really good.” Of course, for me, I don’t want it; it’s zero me due to the overload of smoky, spicy, and boozy notes. But it deserves a sniff because of how well it handles turning its violent, loud notes into a dressing lotion that smells and feels expensive.
