Descripción
Invictus Aqua (2018) by Rabanne is a woody aquatic fragrance for men. Launched in 2018, this composition was created by Nicolas Beaulieu and Juliette Karagueuzoglou. The top notes reveal a blend of grapefruit and violet leaves, giving way to a heart where marine notes, violet, woods, and sandalwood intertwine. The trail settles on a base of ambergris and Amberwood.

First off, let me clarify that this has nothing to do with the 2016 edition. You’re probably looking for that one, because this new reformulation will disappoint you. This version is sweeter; to me, it reminds me of fragrances like Bvlgari Aqva Pour Homme. It has a shorter longevity than the 2016 version and has lost that salty touch in favor of a cloyer sweetness. If you haven’t tried the 2016 version, you’ll like it; if you have, you won’t be excited.
April 2018: Reviewing this fragrance with the caveat that I haven’t tried the 2016 version. To me, the original Invictus was a miss—I tested it several times and it just didn’t work. If I had to compare this 2018 flanker to the original, the original would take the crown, because this new version doesn’t work for me either. I don’t get why it’s called Aqua, since it has nothing refreshing about it. On the contrary, it’s a dark, classic retro aquatic with a very masculine vibe. It reminds me of things like Dior Sauvage, Fendi Fan d’Aqua, Issey Miyake Nuit, or Avon Man-style perfumes. It didn’t remind me of Invictus at all. Far from being citrusy or watery, it smells like a dark, woody, ambered aromatic with a grapefruit sparkle, a powdery violet floral touch, some metallic and leafy green notes, slightly sweet, and with leather undertones. I found it very generic, unoriginal, and something I’ve heard a thousand times before. In the end, since fruity colognes are overdone, these men’s perfumes all sound very similar to each other with no surprises.
I liked Invictus Aqua 2018, slightly less than the 2016 version but more than the original. It’s a woody aquatic that feels closer to the original Invictus. The name ‘Aqua’ fits well because it smells more watery than the previous one, which was more citrusy. I don’t smell much citrus at the top, but rather something fruity, without that chewing gum vibe from the first one. You can definitely smell the violet leaves and that marine touch that makes it fresh. After a few hours, and especially as it dries down, it gets closer to the original, keeping the bay leaf. I’ve liked both Aqua versions a lot; maybe because of the bay leaf and violet, I prefer them over Sauvage. The longevity was notable for an aquatic, lasting about 8 to 9 hours. Conclusion: Puig has launched very easy-to-please scents, especially alongside Paco Rabanne, taking no risks but guaranteeing sales.

I don’t detect much citrus at first, but rather something fruity, without that first-generation gum note. You can smell the violet leaves and that marine touch that keeps it fresh. After a few hours, and especially as it dries down, it gets closer to the original, keeping the laurel. I’ve really liked both Aqua versions; perhaps because of the laurel and violet, I prefer them over the Sauvage ones. The longevity was notable for an aquatic, lasting about 8 to 9 hours. I love it for going to the park, working out, or attending outdoor daytime events. Being aquatic, it’s not overpowering; instead, it delights with its sea and wood scent, with a touch of sweetness. I highly recommend it for the beach. Note: I don’t know much about perfumes, this is just my opinion, and girls like it.
Spectacular, the best Invictus out there. It’s a perfect blend of Acqua di Giò and Lacoste Blanc, which is why it smells so fresh and rich. People might hate it for being another good, famous fragrance, but it’s a surprise. If you want to smell amazing, get ready to use classics; this one is worth it, it’s too good. Try it now if you like aquatic and fresh scents. 10/10, though the price is high.

Armaf El Cielo dries down in a very similar way, though with a slightly sweeter nuance.
This fragrance is, without a doubt, the crown jewel among the Invictus flankers. Super fresh and delicious, with that gum note that makes it unique. Incredible and excellent for ages 18 to 30, though if you’re 100, it still suits you perfectly. Ideal for sensual and charismatic guys.
Fresh grapefruit… opens with citrus and bubblegum violet, and that’s it. Then it’s just grapefruit and synthetic ambergris that gives me headaches. Compared to Montblanc Spirit, it’s less fresh but more complex and lasts longer than Invictus. Paco Rabanne feels lower quality and very synthetic. However, that simplicity makes it more pleasant than Spirit. Would I buy it? Never! The longevity is insufficient and the projection barely reaches for a sports fragrance. It’s a scent you’d hesitate to keep on your shelf because it’s synthetic and piercing.
Citrusy grapefruit… opens with the delightful citrus notes of grapefruit and gum violet from Adam’s, and… that’s it. After that, it’s just grapefruit and the anguishing, inevitable synthetic ambergris. What headaches the entire Invictus line gives me! This is also a disappointment. Compared to Montblanc Spirit, this is less fresh but more complex with greater longevity and projection than Invictus. Paco Rabanne shows lower quality and very synthetic. On the other hand, setting aside the synthetic aspect, there’s something in that simplicity that makes Spirit more pleasant. Should I buy blind? Never! Longevity is way below acceptable, and projection is necessary for a sport fragrance. Reflecting on it, I think it’s one of those fragrances where you hesitate a lot on whether to buy or leave on the shelf to search for something better (due to being synthetic and sharp). Thanks and greetings.
Since I don’t like the original Invictus, I had no expectations with this fragrance. I found it in my dad’s dresser, and to my surprise, I really liked it. Much better than the original Invictus. I even dared to test it on my skin (being a woman) and it highlights the violet note more than anything else. Moderate longevity and trail.

The scent is very similar to its classic sister. As for projection, the classic is very sharp and gives headaches, while Aqua is much calmer with a toned-down projection, giving it a more versatile and sporty touch. Should I buy blind? No. Is it worth having? If you like the classic, yes; if not, like in my case, maybe. There are better options on the market. 75/100.
Smells exactly like the classic, but the projection is much softer and doesn’t cause headaches like the original. It’s calmer, more versatile, and has a sporty vibe. I wouldn’t buy it blindly, but if you like the classic, it’s worth trying; otherwise, you might want to look elsewhere. There are better options out there. 75/100.
I’ve had it for almost 4 years and always loved it a lot, it brings back many memories. It’s a pity they’ve discontinued it, though you can still find it in some places. In my opinion, what I notice most is the grapefruit, the aquatic notes, and the ambroxan. The opening is very sparkling and citrusy, though the dry-down is a bit dirtier. It’s a very linear perfume and on my skin it’s extremely long-lasting. If I wear it at night, it always fades to skin-level by the next morning until I shower.
Excellent summer perfume, don’t bother getting the discontinued and ultra-sought-after 2016 version. This is exactly the same fragrance and lasts me the whole day (despite my terrible dry skin). A scent everyone likes, good longevity, and still available at a good price. What more could you ask for?
Bought it because it smells delicious, fresh, and sweet, perfect for summer days.
The cleanest perfume I’ve ever tried; it smells like shampoo (in a good way). It leaves an incredible trail and is a compliment magnet. There’s nothing to criticize.
The cleanest perfume I’ve ever smelled, literally smells like shampoo (in a good way). Leaves an insane trail, it’s a compliment monster. Simply, there’s nothing to criticize.
Very fresh, versatile, looks good in any moment, especially I like it for daytime. My girlfriend loves when I wear it.
I tested it on a decant and also had a partial of this discontinued version, but in the end, I didn’t buy it; pass. It’s very pleasant, a more refined and milder take on the original, but in my opinion, it doesn’t differentiate enough as a flanker to give me something extra that would make me decide. For anyone looking for a refined Invictus, I highly recommend Acqua di Gio Absolu over Aqua 2018. 5/10.
Got it as a gift and it’s an exquisite perfume, but aside from that anecdote: I already owned Dar al Hae from Ard al Zaafaran, and they smell identical. Comparing price and similarity, if I had to buy it, I’d choose Dar al Hae and save a lot of money. Rumor has it these Arab brands drained the liquid from Invictus Aqua 2018 into their bottles and sold it under a different name. If they work this well, they should be more creative and release original scents instead of cloning… but whatever, it’s a good job.
