Lately, the Burberry line has been my mandatory stop when hitting up the perfumeries, especially on my way to the gym. It’s become my routine to spray a couple of shots of Hero EDT on my arm before a workout. But my connection to Hero has more to do with the lack of interesting fragrances than the merits of a perfume that, while not my favorite, at least smells like something recognizable and pleasant. A few years ago, the British brand started a total image overhaul, leaving behind outdated clichés. Ad campaigns featuring blondes in cardigans in nautical settings no longer appeal to young consumers looking to stand out. The Hero campaign featuring actor Adam Driver showcasing his athletic skills running on the beach with a horse until he transforms into a centaur has seduced many, placing it among the best-selling men’s fragrances and solidifying this new creative era that has propelled the brand. Elixir is the latest launch in a line that has taken steps in its olfactory journey through the two previous editions, Hero Parfum and Hero Parfum Intense, towards a deeper version with that resinous accord of sweet woods, leather, and smoke that shares reasonable similarities with Pasha Noire Edition and a rock-solid performance that never lets you down. Hero Elixir incorporates vanilla in the opening to push the trend to the extreme, where before there was only cedar and pine freshness.

Elixir is the latest launch, evolving from Hero Parfum and Intense into a deeper version with resinous accords of sweet woods, leather, and smoke, similar to Pasha Noire Edition, with a rock-solid performance that never lets you down. The vanilla and tonka bean aren’t noticeable; cedar dominates strong, just like in Hero Parfum Intense, mixing with rough leather similar to Gucci Absolute. There’s a chemical touch, definitely the smoke note that I don’t like, but it does feel ambery. It’s potent, though I’m not sure about the longevity; it smells like fresh woods, not old ones, and animal leather. For me, the Gucci is better; this one leaves me smelling like medicine because of that smoke note I hate. It’s pricey for what it gives, 6/10.
It’s an absolute beast of a clone of Hero Parfum Intense, almost indistinguishable. They share that base of leather and dry woods with that signature sweet-acidic touch. The key difference is that here the leather is more refined, less animalic than the original, very similar to SpiceBomb Dark Leather. Plus, there’s an extra sweet afternote from the vanilla and tonka that emerges hours later once the initial leather and wood blast fades. In terms of performance, it sits between the Parfum and the Intense: about 7-8 hours on skin, then it’s almost gone.
