Ambre is an amber-centric perfume that’s sweet, elegant, and powdery—something feminine but nothing that would scare a confident man. The scent is soft, delicate, and sweet without being cloying; it doesn’t aim for a hard amber, but rather the resin’s most innocent facet. At first, the sweet, vanilla-infused amber with a well-executed resinous touch isn’t overly sugary. Gradually, it turns powdery, with the amber wrapped in vanilla and an undefined flower over patchouli and sandalwood. Here, it loses sweetness and gains elegance, creating something sophisticated and sober with a nice floral-woody, powdery touch. It stays this way until it dries down, except for a balsamic, airy veil at the very end, perhaps from the opoponax, always subtle. The development is fast, noticeable within the first hour, then it stays consistent until the end. It evokes an attractive, sophisticated woman in a suit—an executive and entrepreneur who knows what she wants. Performance is great, lasting about 8 to 9 hours on skin with a strong trail at first, then moderate-to-high. It suits cold or temperate climates, day or night. It has a feminine vibe that prevents me from loving it entirely; I just like it. It’s not so feminine that a man can’t wear it; I’ll keep using it until it’s gone, but a blind buy might be risky. It’s high quality and pricey: if you’re a woman and can afford it, it’s supremely elegant; for men, I’d say try it before buying.
I love the amber in this, but there’s one note that kills it for me: it smells like dampness and wet earth. I’m not sure if it’s the patchouli or the opoponax (and I don’t like either), but it strips away all the charm and makes it a bit rough. There are much softer, more elegant amber options out there.
