Timeless, kind, warm, and balanced. Its simplified complexity recalls great fragrances from decades ago, with fine craftsmanship. Very well constructed; though soft in the air, up close it’s a bubble that lasts 6 hours, fading slowly. I love it. At €70, it’s an absolute steal for the quality. An amber oriental with just the right amount of sweetness, delivering everything it promises. Exquisite and distinctive. Recommend trying it.

HdP’s Ambre 114 (2001) and Serge Lutens’ Ambre Sultan (2000) are, without a doubt, the parents of today’s ambers. I loved Jerry Drake’s review for highlighting their differences: while AS is greener, imposing, and animalic, Ambre 114 strikes a perfect balance between sweet, spicy, balsamic, and aromatic, feeling like a ‘primordial’ amber that has it all. To my nose, nutmeg and refined thyme stand out over a dominant base of amber and vanilla. Sandalwood, rose, and benzoin add density; patchouli and tonka bean give it a slightly powdery touch, yet it remains elegant, warm, and of tremendous quality. It evolves to become sweeter, less spicy, and slightly musky, with a contained animal note supported by that robust amber foundation. It’s a true masterpiece: when I first smelled it, not only did my head spin, but I understood the archetype of many previous fragrances. Ideal use in cold weather, from semi-formal to formal occasions, dates, and special events, with that conquering charm. Very good performance without being beastly, and a price that’s a steal. A perfume that will attract those who don’t usually gravitate toward amber as well as its lovers. It heads in the direction of the legendary Ambre Sultan, but with a delicious, seductive amber presence. The herbaceous notes of Ambre Sultan are toned down here, making it easier for beginners to wear. Thyme and nutmeg aren’t overpowering; the thyme is more harmonious. Amber, the star, delivers that spicy-sweet-balsamic sensation with a slightly dry or powdery touch, but without exaggeration, thanks to a careful dosage. It’s a warm, organic sweetness that inspires confidence, with subtle animalistic traits that are never uncomfortable, but rather a warm mix with a spicy support, gaining attraction with the vanilla-tonka combo. Ambre 114 surprises by being extremely well-blended; its sweetness recedes to reveal resinous nature, patchouli, and vetiver. With good longevity and moderate sillage, it’s not the most potent amber, but it brings smiles and wraps you in warmth on cold days. Passion and warmth for lovers of amber, musk, vanilla, and spices.

Opens with nutmeg and then amber with vanilla. Smells good. Has that powdery vibe of MIP. Longevity and sillage are good. More for night and winter. It’s not bad, but it doesn’t set my heart on fire.

A fragrance that appears simple, wearable, classic, and timeless. It has the right amount of spice, the right amount of wood, the right amount of amber, and the right balance, with flawless transitions and very measured warmth. Basically, it’s ambroxan amber and nutmeg with a balsamic accent, a drop of rose, and a touch of sandalwood; it seems like little and doesn’t need more. Everything is measured and tied together from the start. There are many good ambers, but this is a benchmark to compare against any other for its mastery and complexity. Excellent quality, designed to dazzle with its beautiful simplicity. Simply put, ‘Ambre 114’ is a flawless and seductive amber. Rating: 8
