Let me start… and no offense taken. It’s a sweet opening, spicy custard-style vanilla, with an incense base and sweet woods from cedar, though maybe sandalwood gives it that burnt wood touch. Fi. Definitely a good scent… Now comes the bad part. With By the Fireplace by Maison Margiela and Ameer Al Oudh by Lattafa on the market, why spend that much money on this Bois Talisman by Dior? The Lattafa one is practically the same; to untrained noses, they might seem like knock-offs. Whereas in other Dior scents, you notice sublime quality like in Ambre Nuit Esprit de Parfum, here you don’t. A few months ago, Dior was my favorite house for creating unique aromas, not just ingredients. Mr. Kurkdjian has sunk the ship; his last three launches are a disaster: Eau Forte, Dior Homme Parfum 25, and now this. It’s a good perfume, clear as day, but redundant for me. Another disaster. Scent: 9, Sillage: 7, Originality: 2, Value: 5. Conclusion: With By the Fireplace and Ameer Al Oudh available, a resounding NO.
Total work of art; the concept and execution are flawless. The accord of the three vanillas in Bois Talisman is unique; I’ve never tried anything like this. It performs incredibly well, lasting days on clothes. Many people hate it, but I don’t understand why. I tested it in Paris alongside Tobacolor and Vanilla Diorama, and within 20 minutes, I knew this was the winner. I also tried Vanille Fatale by Tom Ford or Vanilla 28 by Kayali, but nothing surpasses this vanilla accord. Some say it’s a modern take on the iconic Grand Soir, and that seems great to me. I feel like Kurkdjian and Dior want to distance themselves from critics; not all are bad, but there’s a toxic community in the perfume world. Of course, like in cinema, music, or fashion, there are always complaints, but also hits. Don’t throw everything in the same bucket. The price seems high, but it’s a private collection of luxury perfumery. Plus, it’s cheaper than the new Centaurus by Creed, which, by God, cost almost 350 euros and was a terrible version of Red Tobacco. I didn’t like it. Maybe few have it here in Chile, but I got lucky finding it in Europe two weeks after launch. It was out of stock in many Parisian boutiques, but I managed to get it. Lucky for me.

A few months ago, Dior was my favorite house, not for its ingredients but for creating unique, differentiated aromas that set themselves apart from the rest of commercial perfumery. Mr. Kurkdjian has come to Dior to sink the ship… his last launches have been a disaster: Eau Forte, Dior Homme Parfum 25, and now this, a perfume that adds absolutely nothing new and, even though it’s from Dior’s private line, is far from the word exclusivity. It’s definitely a good perfume, clear as day, but redundant in my opinion. Another disaster. Scent: 9, Sillage: 7, Originality: 2, Value: 5. Smells good, but it disappointed me due to a lack of originality. As a vanilla fan, it offers nothing new. There are better options: Luna Felina by Ateliers Parfums, Silky Woods, Dionysus, Oud Vanille by Mancera, Herod, Vanilla Diorama, Dark Vanilla by Montale, L’Homme aux Gants, Palo Santo by Carner Barcelona, Althair, or By the Fireplace (which, in my opinion, doesn’t resemble Bois Talisman). The price is excessive for what it is. They’ve climbed the rafters.
