I was disappointed with this 2021 version, quite fleeting on skin, cloying at first, then it dissipates like a cheap Splash. I was lucky to use the 2016 version from the Leather collection with the magenta cap and faux leather packaging, what a delicious scent. I have the original Black Opium by YSL and the 2016 Gardenia competed well in longevity and aroma, with the latter being a bit more floral. I went to Zara looking for that version and found this limited edition of 200ml at the price of a 100ml one 🤪. Plus, there were boxes of another version unopened. What a letdown, I left happy thinking I got double for the price of a regular one, but of low quality and a ‘fruity’ scent. If you find a different version than this 2021 one, buy it without hesitation. The perfume isn’t ugly, it smells good but doesn’t have the quality of previous ones, clarifying to avoid offending anyone.
I don’t know the pre-2020 versions, I use this year’s and it lasts a long time, over 10 hours on skin, although it doesn’t project much, maybe only the first two hours, though I should give it the benefit of the doubt and use it when face masks don’t interfere. It smells good, not overwhelming. It’s easy to like, very sweet, vanilla, and yes, I notice some coffee, very subtle. It’s a good option for those who enjoy these scents and don’t want to invest much. It won’t make you look bad, but I don’t see it as good in hot and humid climates because it could be overpowering. I’d give it a 7/10 because the price helps.
Until now, along with ‘Rich Warm’, they are my favorites from Zara. It’s a joy to try this Black Opium clone; for those who can’t afford the original or it doesn’t fit our budget, it’s the best option. Of course, it’s not the original and doesn’t have the same price, so the performance isn’t equal (the original has more longevity and intensity, less sweetness, and more darkness). BUT, quality-price-scent is a 10. As I say… ‘the 3Bs’: GOOD, BEAUTIFUL, and CHEAP.
Note: Reviewing the 2022 version with the rounded bottle. According to Zara, it has gardenia, orange blossom, coffee, raspberry, and peach. This iconic Zara perfume, which has undergone reformulations, opens with a sweet fruity aroma, mostly raspberry. Immediately you feel the coffee, creamy and sweet (more like a Starbucks than an espresso), thanks to the gardenia and orange blossom. Unlike the famous Black Opium, Gardenia is linear and focuses on one facet of Black Opium: the coffee and white flower. Like other Zara dupe clones, it’s very linear. It’s versatile, friendly, and liked by many. It’s synthetic and, if you don’t pay attention, seems just sweet. Moderate longevity, about 6 hours on skin, and similar projection. I use it at home and when going out. The good thing about the new bottles is they are refillable, less waste and cost. It’s a good daily option, neither annoying nor complicated.
I find it very pleasant and wearable, smells like nature, a cocktail of flowers with a coffee note that gives it interest. I use it daily for work and informal outings. Projection and longevity are moderate for the first two hours, then it softens. I prefer it for daytime and in mild or warm weather. It seems nice for gifting, has an accessible price, and usually pleases everyone. Would I buy it again? No, because among the low-cost options, there are others I like more with better longevity and projection.
Fruity floral fragrance, simple and fresh, perfect for cool days, spring, or autumn. More than bergamot, I feel it’s sweet with a fruity base, maybe pear? I don’t recognize coffee in it. Nothing sophisticated, but recommended for daily routine and casual occasions. For the price, I think it’s quite good.
I have the 2022 edition and heard the previous one was better. I tried it last night next to the original Black Opium: one arm Black Opium, the other Gardenia. Are they clones? Sort of. It’s a super-simplified Black Opium. It smells like coffee with a vanilla touch; if the original has ten nuances, this has one. If you want the Black Opium scent without spending the full price on weekdays, it’s a good option. People might be fooled unless they smell it directly on your skin. The sillage and longevity aren’t anything like the original, but since I got the pack with Orchid for €15 for 90ml, it’s worth it. You can shower in Gardenia and reapply as much as you want; I still love it and it’s great for not using the original. You can tell Black Opium has better quality, but honestly, it’s great for daily wear. The only downside is that it’s super overused and means nothing anymore; if you want it as a signature scent, know that way more people will be wearing it. Two out of thirty women at my job use it. It’s sweet but not cloying—not a cheesy sweetness, but a sweet vanilla. If you’re lucky and no one around you is using it, it’s perfect. I wouldn’t wear it in a small space like an office, but maybe in a mall or store where there’s more room. I see it as youthful and fun, ideal for dinner with friends or a date; men love it.

It’s ideal for weekdays if you don’t want to spend on the original—they’ll blend in unless they smell it directly on your skin. You can shower with Gardenia and reapply as much as you like; I love it and it’s a great option to save money on the other. You can tell Black Opium has better quality, but this is great for daily wear. The only flaw is that it’s super mass-produced and means nothing anymore; if you want it as a signature scent, prepare for everyone to wear it—two out of thirty women at my work use it. I’m not sure which exact version I have; it’s square-shaped and the perfume is golden in color. It smells casual, but I don’t detect the coffee scent. A good everyday option.
I liked the notes and bought a small bottle to try. I’m glad I did because I wouldn’t buy it again. I can appreciate both expensive niche and cheap everyday perfumes, and this smells like cheap supermarket cologne. Your nose gets saturated quickly and you stop smelling it. A perfume can have synthetic notes without being low quality; in this case, both are true: synthetic and low quality. I don’t recommend it; for slightly more, you can get Angel Schlesser, Elisabeth Arden, or Adolfo Domínguez, which actually have good quality, even if they’re everyday scents. I hope I’ve helped.
My opinion aligns pretty much with Perfumesjuveniles: a flattened Black Opium with very low sillage and poor longevity. Pros: I can use it without fear of wasting it because of its low price. And as BB says, A Domínguez’s are also affordable and far superior in quality. What confirms that I won’t repurchase this. I would repurchase A Domínguez though.
I really like it; it’s one of my favorites from Zara. It’s a strong scent but doesn’t become tiring or overwhelming; I normally wear it at night, but I think it would also work well during the day in cold weather. I detect lots of vanilla and coffee. It’s an excellent low-cost option.
A good economical option for those who like these scents. Although it doesn’t have excellent performance, on my skin it lasts quite a bit, considering Black Opium doesn’t last long on me either. I disagree with those who say it smells like cheap perfume; there are very expensive designer perfumes that smell synthetic or have terrible performance. Only some vintage unreformulated ones (endangered species) and a few exceptions are worth the cost. For the rest, in modern perfumery, you throw away money. That’s why sometimes these economical options have better performance than those of ‘good quality’.
A good budget option for fans of this type of scent. While it doesn’t have excellent performance, on my skin it lasts quite a bit, considering Black Opium doesn’t last long on me either. I disagree with those who say it smells cheap; there are designer perfumes that cost a fortune and smell synthetic or have terrible performance. Only a few vintage unreformulated ones (a species in danger of extinction) and a handful of exceptions are worth their price. Otherwise, in modern perfumery, money is unfortunately wasted. That’s why sometimes having these affordable options is good; they often have better performance than so-called ‘high-quality’ ones.
The scent is fairly linear; to me, it smells more like violets at first. The heart note persists as a caramel macchiato-style coffee (coffee + vanilla), but as it dries, I think I detect an undeclared sandalwood note that reminds me of Carolina Herrera 212 Sexy more than the Black Opium YSL (its declared dupe), which I personally don’t like. Still, I believe it’s a fragrance of very good quality with solid longevity (6–8 hours) for those who enjoy these notes.
I bought it in a pack with Orchid and at first thought about gifting it to my grandmother because it reminded me of La Vie est Belle—cloying with praline notes. I ended up wearing it out of necessity, and I have to say, I’m starting to like it. On my skin, it smells like rum with roasted coffee, sort of an alcoholic coffee cream that I enjoy because it’s bold. The vanilla comforts me and makes the orange blossom less soapy and more masculine, almost leaning toward lavender. It’s very linear and lasts about 3–4 hours. It’s great for everyday wear. I’m pleasantly surprised.
Maybe it’s just me, but this new version of this iconic perfume doesn’t even come close to the original Gardenia. It doesn’t last the same, and it doesn’t smell anything like it.
Bought it in June; I loved it in the store and didn’t hesitate to take it home. But with wear, it felt too heavy (I can’t stand strong or cloying scents) and I stopped liking it. One day I wore too much and got dizzy. I gifted it to a cousin, who absolutely loved it without hesitation. It does smell like coffee and vanilla: sweet at first, then turning bitter and cloyant as it dries. On the plus side, the longevity is impressive. In that same purchase, I also got Violet Blossom, Applejuice, Fields at Nightfall, and Wonder Rose. The ones with the best longevity were Gardenia and Fields at Nightfall.
I bought it in June and loved it in the store, so I didn’t hesitate to take it home. However, with actual wear, I found it very heavy (even I, who can’t stand strong or cloying scents), and I stopped liking it. On one occasion, I even over-applied it and felt dizzy. I gifted it to a cousin who absolutely loved it without any complaints. It does smell like coffee and vanilla: I perceived the opening as sweet, but the dry-down became more bitter and cloying. On the other hand, I want to highlight its longevity. In that same purchase, I also grabbed Violet Blossom, Applejuice, Fields at Nightfall, and Wonder Rose. The ones with the best staying power were Gardenia and Fields at Nightfall.
Best blind buy I’ve ever made: lasts forever and smells like sweet vanilla coffee—it’s exquisite!
It’s a floral scent with a touch of fruit. It resembles Black Opium, but I don’t detect any coffee, which is one of the notes I love in that perfume. The evolution leans more toward powdery than floral. It lasts very little on my skin, but it’s a pleasant aroma and the price is super convenient.
I love it! Very long-lasting and smells amazing! If it resembles YSL, it also reminds me a bit of Miss Dior Rose n Roses! ❤️
I just got gifted this in a set with Orchid. It smells good at first, though I can’t detect many notes or nuances. The opening is a very clean, fresh floral, followed by sweet coffee. However, the dry-down didn’t impress me; it fades quickly and leaves a plasticky scent behind. The coffee note also smells weird on my skin. I don’t own the original Black Opium since it never caught my eye; based on the name and bottle design, I thought it would be an overpowering, dense scent. Thanks to dupes, I finally discovered this rich fragrance. I do own Victorio & Lucchino’s Flor Oriental, and while its main flaw is poor longevity, it smells divine. It has far more notes and nuances than Gardenia, and for me, it’s definitely better. I was disappointed because it doesn’t smell great on my skin once it dries. If you’re like me and don’t love it, try layering it with something sweet and vanilla-based; it seems to take away that plastic smell.
I don’t own Black Opium, but whenever I’ve tried it, Gardenia feels quite similar. Given the price, it’s high quality and a great alternative if that scent isn’t in your budget. You mainly smell vanilla with sweet coffee, without losing that floral touch—it’s delicious and one of my favorite perfumes. I’ve had this one for about two years and noticed it started losing its scent and smelling a bit off; luckily, I have very little left, but it surprised me. I bought it along with Orchid, which didn’t happen to the same thing. I’m not sure if I made a mistake in storing it, but nothing else had the same issue. That said, I’ll definitely buy it again when I finish. I love it ♡
I gifted this to my mom, and we both loved it. It’s an amazing scent for the price at Zara. Totally feminine, sweet, and floral, but where’s the coffee? Overall, a very pleasant perfume at a phenomenal price. An 8/10.
On me, it smells very bitter with a tiny sweet touch that’s barely noticeable. It smells like elegant femininity and has potency. If it had better projection, I would wear it for formal evening events, as the aroma draws quite a bit of attention.
Zara Gardenia – My Personal Take. The opening is floral and fresh, a luminous blend of jasmine, orange, and a juicy peach note. It creates a feminine, cheerful, and clean opening with a radiant vibe perfect for daytime. The heart is supposed to feature coffee, gardenia, and rose, but on the skin, I barely noticed them. What dominates is a sweet, rounded accord that feels more gourmand than floral. The contrast of the coffee and the floral identity are missing, giving the impression of a lack of character in this phase. In the dry-down, vanilla takes the lead: creamy and enveloping. Combined with praline and musk, it achieves great longevity and projection, leaving a warm, sweet trail that lasts for hours. Verdict: Zara Gardenia is a feminine, sweet, and long-lasting fragrance, ideal for those seeking an accessible gourmand trail. Although its name and pyramid promise something floral with coffee, in practice it smells more like vanilla with a fresh, clean start. An interesting option if you’re looking for an affordable, durable, and sweet perfume that isn’t cloying.
Zara Gardenia – my personal review. The opening is floral and fresh, with a luminous combination of orange blossom, orange, and a juicy peach note. The result is a feminine, cheerful, and clean opening, ideal for daytime. The heart is supposed to be coffee, gardenia, and rose, but it’s not noticeable on skin. A sweet, rounded accord predominates, more gourmand than floral. You don’t feel the coffee contrast or the floral identity, which can give an impression of ‘lack of character’. In the base, vanilla is the star: creamy and enveloping. Combined with praline and musk, it achieves great longevity and projection, leaving a warm and sweet trail that lasts for hours. Conclusion: it’s a feminine, sweet, and long-lasting fragrance, ideal for those seeking an accessible gourmand. Although its name promises floral with coffee, in practice it smells more like vanilla with a fresh and clean start. An interesting option if you’re looking for something economical, durable, and sweet without being cloying.
It’s weird that Zara diluted this bestseller until it’s a shadow of itself, like with other scents. Still a marvel for the price. I usually don’t like overly ‘feminine’ florals, but this Gardenia has nothing to do with Inditex’s cheap knock-offs that fade instantly. Yes, it’s a cliché white floral leaning feminine—that scent of a young girl or a retired lady (versatile, not in a bad way)—but it manages to create dissonance in a world full of identical smells. At first, it smells white and soapy, more like soft jasmine than the declared orange blossom. It’s not soap or body wash; it’s a clean, soft touch that wraps around the room. It’s not innovative, but it’s not the redundant white floral fragrance of other flankers either. After 20-30 minutes, the soapy veil fades and coffee appears. It’s not potent, but it adds a bitter note in sync that makes it stand out. On my skin, that bitter note dilutes over time but remains present until the shower, refined and calm. In its dry-down, it smells fine (not refined), with incredibly diluted but present coffee and jasmine notes that invite you to throw yourself in bed, cover up with a duvet, and rest. The fragrance seems to whisper that it’s been a good day and it’s time to sleep. I also detect a slight peach note (not a strong fruity one, but it adds consistency). As for longevity and sillage… well, that’s why I’m writing this. I went to sleep at my sister’s house and forgot my toiletry bag, so I used her gel, shampoo, cream, and perfume. I sprayed it twice at 2:15 PM and was still smelling and projecting quite a bit at 11:00 PM after so many hours. The sillage is moderate: it projects well, people will smell you when they pass by or talk to you, but it doesn’t bother anyone or fill the space like other perfumes such as Aromatics Elixir. Good projection for 3-4 hours (on hydrated skin), then it becomes skin-scent from the 5th or 6th hour. It smells good, even if it’s not a revolution. It’s stable and doesn’t do weird things. You can wear it at 20 or 60, or even if you’re a man (subjective), without being judged. You can buy it, smash the bottle, and mix it with mikanade so your house smells amazing if you don’t want to wear it yourself. Considering that 180ml costs $17.95, I think it’s not a bad idea to take a look. P.S.: People compare it to Black Opium… well, it’s the schoolgirl cousin who didn’t stand out, while YSL is the rebellious artist funded by a European university, but in that context, they make sense as similar.
It’s pretty, but it doesn’t last even an hour. I paid 8 euros for it, so it’s fine for unimportant days, but honestly, it’s just a ‘meh’.
It smells like the EDT of Black Opium, but watch out: it’s the ‘Over Red’ version. I wear it during the day and switch to YSL when night falls. It’s a good alternative.
