Gentleman Eau de Parfum by Givenchy

They reformulated it. I tried it again and it lacks projection and longevity. Years ago, it was an absolute beast of orris and cardamom; now it smells like talc and vanilla, a fucking terrible formula or batch. They destroyed it. The current Reserve Privé version is better.

Whenever I smell a great perfume, Olivier Cresp is behind it. My two favorites are Armand Basi and Esencia de Loewe… this is another masterpiece. I detect some Whiskito. I love the balsam of Peru; I’d make a perfume with just that note, but it gives me an allergy… here, I love it. With cinnamon, benzoin, and vanilla, it’s cinematic.

Gentleman Eau de Parfum is an elegant proposition within designer perfumery. It opens with powdery iris, lavender, and an alcoholic accord that adds a seductive air, highlighted by a slight spicy bite. From the base, a warm, creamy vanilla and tonka blend emerges, balancing the composition very well. Over time, the iris fades, giving way to a resinous, slightly sweet, and comforting mix. The initial alcoholic accord dissipates, revealing a soft, wearable base. It has a distinctive vibe that recalls Serge Lutens’ Vétiver Oriental without copying it. I’ve finished a 15mL bottle and will definitely repurchase in a larger size. Rating: 4/5 – Excellent.

Gentleman Eau de Parfum is elegance that bites. Dark without being lugubrious, sensual without being vulgar, masculine without falling into clichés. A perfume that doesn’t seduce: it possesses. And when you take it off, something of yours remains… trapped in the air.

I have a bottle from the 2020 batch, and it’s the richest thing I’ve ever tried; I bought a 2024 batch bottle and it leaves much to be desired (compared to the other). It’s still a rich fragrance, but it pains me that they reformulated it for no apparent reason. If I cross paths with a 2020 batch bottle, I’ll buy it without hesitation. The current one is still very good, but anyone who knew the previous formula probably thinks the same. If you can’t get the 2020 batch, buy it anyway because it’s worth it; it’s still an exquisite fragrance. Regarding usage, it goes perfectly with a nice sweater and jeans. I don’t think it’s just for special occasions, but it’s not for wearing with nothing on either. It’s elegant, but you don’t need to be in a suit to wear it. Well-dressed, casual, and it’s more than enjoyable.

The ultimate gentleman by far. I understand that the RP version of the line was the precursor to what happened with DHP 2025: sell, sell, sell, because iris is expensive and we’re broke. Make it more wearable and add a chocolate base or something mainstream. This EDP is categorized as for special occasions, and if that’s the case, the bottle will last you years and you’ll almost never use it. That stuff reviewers say about ‘for a wedding, dinner, blah blah blah’ reduces all the opportunities you have to use this PERFUME. Just cold weather and being well-dressed is enough. Use it because this is exquisite, just don’t abuse the blasts because it can overwhelm you as it’s a dense aroma. The dry-down (the best part) offers, from my experience, a scent I associate with the concept ‘expensive.’ Pepper, iris, vanilla bean, and lavender. Nothing more.

ELEGANCE. If I were asked what stands out most in this fragrance, it’s undoubtedly its refined character and the elegance of a neat, confident man. Olfactorily, the blend of pepper, bergamot, and lavender at the start gives that energetic punch that later, with iris and vanilla, turns into a completely gentlemanly aroma. Personally, I wear it almost every day in winter and autumn because it’s a delightfully charming and wearable signature scent. More potent than Reserve Privée but not as dense as DHI, a perfect balance.

Elegant, sexy, dark. Wow, a delight.

This perfume is spectacular; for me, it’s better than Reserve Privée. While RP is also very rich, it doesn’t quite convince me entirely, as on my skin I notice the whisky notes too much and find it too chocolaty, plus it performs much worse than the EDP. This EDP is a beast in longevity; on me, it lasts well beyond 10 hours. A rich perfume to wear in autumn and winter.

MASTERPIECE. Something I love about works of art is when the name proposed by the artist/brand evokes exactly what is represented; here it is a clear and magnificent example, GENTLEMAN.🎩🕴🏻 SCENT. From the start, it comes out with a sublime combo of orris-vanilla playing to see who is the protagonist, accompanied by balsam of tolu, a very characteristic scent that represents that peculiar elegant touch which gains prominence to last until the dry-down. In its final phase, spices (soft) make their presence felt with that elegant sweetness evoked by cinnamon and tonka bean, without making the perfume scandalous/loud, rather sophisticated without being dirty, since in the base there is lavender that prevents it, it’s a perfect balance, a composition perfectly fitted for the niche world in a commercial bottle, the quality of the ingredients is felt, worthy of GENTLEMAN. ⚜️⚫️ MOOD. A perfume enjoyed from start to finish, its longevity is excellent, easily surpassing 7 hours, ideal for what an event like a wedding or graduation might take. The projection upon leaving is potent but not crude, which gradually diminishes and settles into a heavy/personal bubble ideal for not drawing attention a few meters away, because here you are not a kid, you are a GENTLEMAN.🤵🏻♂️♚

Smells exactly like Hugo Boss Dark Blue. The only difference is that the Hugo version comes out fresher, but they’re practically the same.

Didn’t like it, neither did my husband. Smells outdated, not vintage, but gives off an ‘old man’ vibe. Sorry, that’s just my olfactory memory. Vanilla, pepper, dry, and heavy.

I gifted it to my dad for his birthday, he loves it. Iris and vanilla, very seductive and masculine. Recommended for cold weather, projects a ton.

Test before you buy. I respect the general opinion and understand it, but to prove I can resist group pressure, I have to say I can’t stand it. Too overpowering. It’s a matter of pH and taste; let everyone enjoy their own perfume. For me, Reserve Privée or Boisée are more pleasant.

Simply a wonderful perfume, quality shines through everywhere. Complex, elegant, and opulent scent. If I judged a perfume solely by how it smells, I’d value this five times more than its price. Talc and balsamic profile, with a heavy load of iris and a warm spiced base. The iris is the star throughout its entire evolution, perfect for special occasions. It deserves to be worn with good clothes and personality, as it denotes class, seriousness, and mystery. The longevity is good; it doesn’t project much but lingers on the skin for over 7 hours. The bottle is gorgeous and aesthetic. This is real perfumery, highly recommended.
