Gentleman (2017) by Givenchy is an aromatic woody fragrance for men. Launched in 2017, this composition was created by Olivier Cresp and Nathalie Lorson. The top notes unfold with pear, cardamom, and pineapple; the heart reveals iris, lavender, and geranium; while the base notes land in leather, black vanilla bean, and patchouli.

I had an impulse to buy it blind based on the notes and my good experience with Gentleman EDP and Boisée. Honestly, it’s not what I expected. I was looking for something fresher and more versatile than the previous ones, and it’s not quite that. It has a fruity and floral opening that quickly yields to leather, noticeable at first until everything fades into very soft vanilla and iris. The longevity of the 2021 batch is sad; it didn’t last more than 4 hours on me. The scent is good and reminds me of CH Men Privé, but more daytime and versatile. I see it as perfect for autumn and spring, in the office or on dates. I’d recommend it totally for the scent, not for longevity. Edit: I tested double sprays on my neck and behind my ears, and it still smells good at 8 hours. On clothes, it lasts a full workday and more, so in the end, I have no regrets.

I’m struggling to find adjectives for Gentleman, though its own name seems to be the best one. It has fallen in love with me. I smelled the classic years ago, and as a child, it hit me like a slap, naturally. Yesterday I smelled this one, at 39 years old, and I place it in the ‘jewel’ category. How hard it is to find jewels: things you haven’t smelled before that match your taste. Curiously, it’s not in the style of Loewe Essence, Guerlain Vetiver, or Hermès, which are the queens of my world. But it hit me like a dry punch. I want it.

  • svazquez7

This is an imposter fragrance. They shouldn’t have named it like the classic, legendary Gentleman. Total audacity; it smells like a fast fashion brand cologne or one of CH’s nonsensical annual releases. Expensive and completely boring.

  • JavierSantana

By chance (or design) while browsing for deals, I didn’t see CH Men Privé, that love-hate leather-and-whisky scent that smelled like Coca-Cola on my skin due to being too sweet. Instead, among the One Million and Le Male options, I spotted Gentleman EDT 2017. I’d tried it before and liked it; I even owned the vintage version which was my signature. Wearing the 1974 version at my age wasn’t ideal due to its aggressive civet and era, so I grabbed the modern one. Upon opening, the scent improves with oxygen, losing its synthetic edge and elevating. It starts juicy with candied pineapple, lavender, and cardamomo for a sexy touch. Then comes the iris, a rich modern leather (with violets, labdanum resins, and a hint of castoreum, no indole), and vanilla which, combined with labdanum, gives an amber tone. On my skin, I don’t detect geranium or patchouli. It’s not like the vintage; watch out not to order the wrong one. The vintage is a polished jewel but not for everyone or trendy, while the modern is more accessible. Bottom line: it’s my new favorite fragrance. I keep the vintage for special occasions and use the modern for daily life, especially romantic dates. It lasts about 8 hours with 6 sprays, sticks well, and projects better on clothes. It needs warmth, ideally between 22 and 25 degrees, for that leather-cardamom-black vanilla combo to shine. Formidable.

I tested it in-store and I’m definitely taking it for autumn. It doesn’t smell ‘heavenly’ per se, but it reminds me of the upholstery in my old Nissan Primera from my youth—the final model year, used, sun-baked, and uncleaned. It’s a dry, bitter, earthy scent with leather notes; rare and unique. It doesn’t project much and doesn’t last forever, but it’s the kind of perfume you wear and enjoy without worrying if others will like it.

  • I expected a mess, since YouTubers are often too lenient and sometimes rate things poorly, but I actually see its charm. It’s neutral, great for sterile environments or clean-cut jobs. The first few hours have a juicy, fruity touch, then it dries down. People who find it boring or weak won’t want it, but there are those looking for a typical office perfume, and Prada L’Homme is always the go-to. This is another option. The good thing is that in this Gentleman line, they don’t smell chemical like other base notes. If it’s for the office, keep it in your backpack or leave it in a drawer. I think I made myself clear, haha.

  • Ricardo-powa

Elegant and versatile, but not for kids. Despite the leather notes, it’s not ideal for winter; it’s fresh (it’s an EDT), perfect for the office or summer. It has a vibe similar to Prada L’Homme, a clean scent. It has nothing to do with CH Privé, neither in the opening nor the dry down (Privé dries down to leather, which you don’t notice here).

  • EzeMedianera

I usually prefer fresh scents, but this one truly lives up to its name: rich, elegant, and seductive. It works for any season and is a must-try.

  • I married this fragrance three years ago and I still remember those days as an olfactory poem. The opening is classic, aldehydic, and soapy over a fine leather, evolving into a dominant iris with an air of Dior Homme. At four minutes, pears appear over a well-crafted iris, and at nine, a green mint that enhances the leather. At thirteen minutes, woody ginger and sandalwood combine with orange, and at twenty-two, a leather with 90s-style moss and potted red geranium. At forty-nine minutes, the leather is cleaned up by greens à la Carlo Corintio, mixed with patchouli and iris, turning sweet by the hour with neutral fruity notes reminiscent of water. At two hours, the leather gives way to amber and vanilla liqueur, releasing herbal talc and lavender. At three hours, it loses the iris and grapefruit. At six hours, it balances warm amber with lavender, adding ambergris, patchouli, and wood that replaces the leather. At twelve hours, it’s a liqueur-like amber with ripe bergamot fruit. In the final phase, at twenty-four hours, it returns to a dry leather mixed with liqueur amber and tonka bean, leaving cedar with lanolin, like theatrical creams but more earthy and luxurious, with a trail of lavender and mint giving a calone-like freshness.

Back after my COVID and loss of smell, I’m reviewing this gem again. Givenchy Gentleman 2017 isn’t the personality-free perfume many claim it to be; it blends fruits and flowers with a fine, present aromatic leather—a note missing from the rest of the line and far from the heavy animal leather of the 70s. While it belongs to the aromatic woody family, I perceive it as pure, dry, violet-tinted leather, nothing animal. It starts juicy with pear, spicy cardamom, and a touch of candied pineapple. Within minutes, the cardamom joins the powdery iris, lavender, and that fine leather with a smoky twist for longevity. It doesn’t smell like Prada or Dior Homme; to me, the Diors smell like sharpened pencils and Prada like iris soap. This one leans more toward CH Men Privé or JPG Le Male Essence, but drier and floral. The latest batches of CH Privé lost their leather entirely, leaving just cream and vanilla, whereas Gentleman smells like shoes greased with PACSA fat, softened by fruits, vanilla, and an imperceptible geranium. It’s an ineffable delight, like sex for the nose after macerating the bottle. It’s the new masculinity: freshly shaven, white shirt, slim tie, leather portfolio, and a neat aura. In the absence of modern leathers, this is the best classic, timeless option left; though it’s unisex due to the fruits, I don’t think a woman would feel comfortable in it. Excellent price. Comparing it to Valentino Uomo is unfair; that one smells like La Vie Est Belle with leather, nothing masculine. Gentleman modernizes a chypre leather by removing the moss and adding fruits and vanilla to make it versatile and attractive. Awesome.

  • Gentil vagabond

Givenchy is an excellent brand with very original perfumes from the beginning, and this is no exception. A great elegant and balanced scent, although the longevity is a bit poor.

  • I must say this perfume was a disappointment at first, but then it wasn’t. I went to a retail store (first mistake) asking for perfumes with a leather accord and they sold me this Gentleman. I tried it and, not knowing the accord well and having more desire than knowledge, I bought it (second mistake). There was the disappointment: it’s not a perfume with leather as the protagonist or noticeable. Rather, the leather note gives it body and is accompanied by vanilla. I started to like it when I stopped seeing it as the leather fragrance (which I knew later was what I was looking for) and began to appreciate its other facets: the ripe, sweet, and watery pear, along with the pineapple, form the opening that sweetens the lavender and that dusty touch of iris. Finally, the sweet and lavender trails fall into the vanilla-leather I mentioned. A whole journey. Despite the density, its longevity goes somewhat against the grain, being scarce.

  • JavierSantana

I heard comments from reviewers like Israel Moreno and Primal Scent and I want to clarify a few things. First: iris is its most accentuated note. Whoever says it’s not an iris perfume or that it’s not present is wrong. Second: IT DOES NOT HAVE WOODS. For the love of God, it seems unreal that someone with so many followers can’t discern that it has a leather base, not woods or woody notes. I’m not saying this because the house declares it; even analyzed by my ‘dog nose’, it’s a perfume with quite refined leather; underneath it has resinous and amber nuances, but it doesn’t possess woody notes as such. Third: if you want this DNA for daily wear but that still pulls in dates, go for this. In my opinion, much better than the EDP Reserve Privée. Gentleman EDT doesn’t even cloy in heat, it’s very well constructed and balanced.

  • Wow! What a beautiful scent. It’s not aggressive, nothing delicate but with that masculine touch. Like a retro aroma but it’s a true gentleman, as its name indicates. That pear and that pineapple give it a unique touch, and that leather makes it masculine. I think it’s a scent for personal taste, a delight for the senses. The pear is felt throughout the journey, but its dry down is glorious.

  • I bought and reviewed it years ago, almost when it came out. It never seemed like much to me beyond the beautiful opening and the lavender with soft iris. It remains weak; it’s good that it’s an EDT, but alongside the fresh leather, there are woods! How can it not have them? And patchouli, what is that? A glorious wood alongside vetiver and sandalwood. They look like shrubs, but the aroma is woody. I bought it again yesterday because it was a gift. It sits there among others in my wardrobe, like the Intense, which is extremely sweet and potent, and I think to make it stand out you have to apply it more than once. Dry, dusty, rough, fresh, white fruity, leather, woody. For daytime and evening.

Here we have something safe and inoffensive, like ‘record and play’. I bought it for my collection; the Gentleman line is one of my favorites and I own several, but this EDT is my least preferred. What I like most is the opening, which rounds out a delicious fruity leather that quickly settles and softens the slightly sweet iris and patchouli thanks to the vanilla. Everything is in homeopathic doses, very soft, except for the scarce minutes of the opening. The trail and longevity are low; you’ll have to apply a lot. I insist, the longevity rating on Fragrantica groups bad perfumes with regular performers. Three hours isn’t the same as five. This EDT sticks very close to the skin after three hours, and I can’t say its longevity is moderate. It’s rich, safe, and versatile; you can use it almost for any weather or occasion, but I’m not sure if I should have bought it.

  • After being a fan of Dior Homme in several versions, almost by accident, smelling this to see if it resembled Givenchy Gentleman Cologne, I sprayed it three times and automatically called the salesperson to buy a bottle. It’s a masculine, soft scent that generates well-being and security. I see it as ideal for a signature scent, very much in the vibe of Dior or Prada.

  • Mr. Baskerville

They say all the past is better, but not always. At a certain age, I see people emphasizing that to the point of making it their life, just like their parents, yet curiously, that same crowd hates being called ‘old’ or ‘sir’. Plus, they practice permanent complaining: the music is bad, the patio is crowded, the grass isn’t green… Gentleman 2017 is Givenchy’s vision of how a gentleman would wear it today. It’s not a bad fragrance. Although the sweet opening of cardamom, pear, and pineapple isn’t my thing, the blend of iris and lavender gives the leather a subtle, elegant body, adding that masculine touch. Does it compare to the 1974? No, it’s a different kind of gentleman: younger and adapted to current elegance. I don’t fully share that impression, but I understand it. Longevity and projection are acceptable. I advise trying both versions.

  • SantoGrial

I bought a bottle based on the good reviews and I’m satisfied. That fruity halo at the beginning, with that dusty touch, gives off a delicious aura. It’s true it doesn’t last long, maybe three hours of projection, but it’s worth it. It’s a cheerful scent, perfect for any occasion, and you’ll always smell good. If I categorize perfumes into smelling good, smelling rich, or smelling delicious, this falls into the ‘rich’ category.

  • You can really tell how the scent evolves over time. I love the opening and heart, but the dry down leaves a powerful leather note that, while not bad, doesn’t quite win me over. When I smell my clothes, I only detect that leather, with no pear or iris left. It’s a great fragrance overall, but this shift from fruity to strong leather is its weak point for me.

  • I’ve only tried it, but it’s a good alternative. It’s one of those perfumes that stands out quite a bit, yet it’s soft and rich, very fresh, and a perfect signature. I think it’s a great scent to be recognized. 8.5/10. Longevity: ?, projection 9/10, blind buy 9/10, price 8.3/10, current final note 8.7, still testing.

  • This was one of my first designer perfumes, and I really loved it. I wore it to a special event that I have very fond memories of. One of the things I like most is the pear note, which doesn’t dissipate over time and stays continuous. In my opinion, it’s an excellent option to start exploring iris fragrances.

  • If you want a fragrance that gives a sense of cleanliness, this is a great option. With 5-6 sprays, it flooded the space with scent and has a good trail for the first 2 hours. It’s not a beast mode perfume by any means; don’t get confused. It’s a soft scent, with an iris that feels quite what we already know from this Givenchy line. It’s very versatile, but I see it as ideal for spring and daytime. I consider its worst time to be on cold days. I don’t see it for formal events, as it doesn’t impose and would lose against heavier, more masculine trails. That said, it would be a differentiator.

  • Barras_fragancias

Okay… the opening is delicious, super fresh, a pear scent mixed with an iris that slightly reminds me of Prada L’Homme and a barely perceptible acidic pineapple, plus a hint of vanilla that adds sweetness. If the perfume smelled like the opening the whole time, it would be a 10/10… however, that’s not the case at all. After 30 minutes, it starts to smell like leather, but not a pleasant one; a bitter, petroleum-like leather, almost burnt leather. It goes from that unique, fresh, and rich aroma to something that’s nothing special. Moreover, its longevity and projection are very poor; maybe it doesn’t react well on my skin, but I feel there are better iris options on the market. I felt this perfume wanted to be Prada L’Homme or the Gentleman EDP Intense version without reaching the heels of either. At first, I didn’t want to sell it because I loved its opening, but that burnt leather aroma repulsed me so much that I sold it. It’s worth noting that I personally hate perfumes with leather; I prefer sweet, citrus, or unisex scents. So if you like leather, this is perfect for you… but even in that case, perfumes like Montblanc Explorer have a much more pleasant fresh leather; I don’t recommend this Gentleman at all.

  • Delicious fruity opening accompanied by that iris reminiscent of the Gentleman line. Powdery, clean, and with that leather base, making it super masculine. Great perfume for warm seasons (without abusing on extremely hot days). Versatile beyond measure. Romantic date, formal event, or everyday wear; it always looks good. If you want compliments, this one delivers them. Highly recommended. If there’s anything to criticize, it’s a bit more projection (longevity is perfect). Rating: 8.8/10.

  • Yung Life Bby

Let’s start. I would define Gentleman as a clean fragrance. Its fruity top notes stand out and make the perfume pleasant from the start, enjoyable without being cloying. As it progresses, the iris stands out, and in my opinion, I sense the leather but not as dominant as others say. It has a special charm on mild autumn and spring days, where the weather isn’t extreme; it’s in these scenarios that it loses its spark, as the ambient smell can mask it since it’s not very potent compared to other derivatives like the EDT Intense or my favorite, the EDP. It’s pleasant, smells clean, perfect for the office because it doesn’t invade or overwhelm, although I agree with those who denounce its low longevity; nothing a decant can’t solve. I recommend it for those who want to smell clean and like soft iris. I’m more than satisfied with the purchase for the versatility it brings to the Gentleman collection.

  • HarrisonTomFord

I used to hate this fragrance in favor of its derivatives. I remember that when I bought it, it grated on me; something didn’t add up. Over time, I realized it was the iris base; I was expecting an extreme addition like in Reserve Privé, but once I knew I shouldn’t expect more, I let it macerate and wore it in the heat. My impressions changed very favorably. I think it deserves a re-evaluation if you have it. Very pleasant.

  • Perfumiris

My boyfriend wore it today, and I didn’t recognize it (something I love to do, though with so many perfumes it’s getting complicated). It seemed strong, especially the leather note, at 30 degrees. The touch of pineapple and pear adds juiciness, but from the start, you can tell there’s lavender and leather; it’s not a light citrus EDT as the color suggests—the iris is more earthy. I think it’s masculine; it’s not easygoing cleanliness but rather for a white shirt, especially in spring and autumn for informal events or the office. The dry down is woody and dry, without sweetness, featuring that fruity leather that makes it interesting. It lasts 1-2 hours with a trail and another 2 hours on the skin. It’s not my favorite in the Gentleman line, but try it if the others don’t suit you, as it steps away from the olfactory profile.

  • campeones22

I was about to buy it, so I applied a drop to one arm and the EDT Intense on the other. Intense wins by a landslide in both longevity and scent. I couldn’t enjoy the smell of the 2017 version; I just don’t get it.

  • Cegacharles27

The iris is noticeable from the very first spray and dominates the entire life of the fragrance. It smells fresh and clean, perfect for hot days or going to the gym. It lasts about 4 to 5 hours on the skin, and its trail doesn’t go beyond an outstretched arm. If you like iris, you’ll find plenty here.

  • Jadelifschitz

I’m surprised how identical it is to YSL L’Homme Libre, which didn’t come back at least in Argentina. I bought it blind; it’s nothing crazy, but I absolutely love it. The powdery feel makes it seem like it has bergamot and basil with pink pepper (even if they aren’t listed in the notes); that aroma reminds me so much of the white part of dry deodorants. Recently, I’ve had the Gentleman line in my lens often and started buying them blind. So far I have this one, Intense, and Privé—all very different but sharing the same heart. All surprised me; I expected something different from each, just going by the packaging. This one is fresh and dry, Intense is almost unisex and smells like vanilla, while Privé smells like whiskey with amber and wood, with a certain similarity to Polo Red Extreme. Worth trying, 8/10.

  • darlinessenza

Let me start with the obvious: Givenchy Gentleman (2017) is a fragrance that doesn’t go unnoticed. It’s intense, spicy, and decidedly masculine. Its scent is, in effect, a true iris bomb complemented by strong fruits and spices. It’s like the bad boy, sexy side of Prada L’Homme.

  • Love at first sniff. That’s exactly what I felt when I tried it for the first time in a department store; I said I needed that scent, that it was my personality bottled up, but everything fell apart when I realized the show is a one-act wonder. Disappointed, I looked at its sisters who also made me fall in love, but none gave me what this one did, even if just for a moment, so I decided to stick with this ephemeral poem. Setting aside the poems that get recycled here, it opens with pear, pineapple, iris, and leather, where the first two are fleeting and the rest is what will accompany you for 90% of the fragrance’s life. In short, none of its sisters resemble it too much except for that iris note, which you’ll find here in a much subtler way. It’s clear this comes closer to the style of its cousin Gentleman Only because it’s the first, and with the rest of the flankers, they decided to go down a different path with way more iris. Personally, I’ve loved it despite its short lifespan, but I wouldn’t recommend it to the masses since it’s not everyone’s cup of tea. My ratings: Scent 9.5, Longevity 6, Projection 3, Quality 10.

  • Nothing like its sister, Givenchy Gentleman Only EDT. This one is just another blue, ambroxan-heavy, vanilla bomb designed to slap you in the face; Gentleman Only actually has the name to back it up. I see it as ideal for young guys who like Invictus or Versace Dylan Blue—it plays in that league. Honestly, it doesn’t add anything for me.

  • Adriamataguzman

I apologize for saying it this way, but I don’t understand some reviews. I think the bare minimum before sharing an opinion is to inform yourself, even if you’ve tested the perfume and even if it seems like everyone here is an expert. I like it quite a bit. Perfumes with iris or violet usually appeal to me, and this one has both notes, especially the iris. I don’t find it as cloying as other Prada or Dior scents; I sense it’s fresher, probably due to citrus, lavender, or geranium notes. As it dries down, vanilla becomes slightly more noticeable, though not too sweet, which I also enjoy. It performs very well for me—I have skin that doesn’t hold fragrance well, and it lasts about 5-6 solid hours, then a bit longer closer to the skin, totaling around 8 hours. It doesn’t have much projection, but people nearby can still detect it without issue. Overall, the Gentleman collection is one of the ones worth it for me. I recommend Boisée and Reserve Privée.

  • A modern, classy scent that reminds you of walking into a luxury store. It’s the most underrated, and for me, along with the EDP, it’s one of the best. If I’d listened to YouTube reviewers, I never would have bought it; thank God I tested it and was pleasantly surprised. It’s the best Gentleman for daily wear, alongside Gentleman Only.

  • I loved it, but it didn’t last long. It’s exquisite for daytime. Perhaps there are better options if performance is your priority.

  • Severely underrated; I don’t understand why others don’t like it. Plus, it does last. Maybe they have a bad pH, which is why they feel it lacks longevity. It’s delicious for daytime and heat, ideal for enclosed spaces like the office.

  • Lautyreyes64

An aroma that breaks the mold. The EDT from Gentlechy by Givenchy opens with freshly cut pear and evolves into a marked iris with a hint of lavender that fits perfectly. It’s a fragrance few talk about, but the scent is excellent, and in my opinion, it’s one of the best in the entire Gentleman line.
