First Penhaligon’s fragrance I’m trying. First from this new collection. My first impression: Supreme quality. My verdict: Good, that’s it. But let’s dig deeper: Created by French master Daphne Bugey (creator of Kenzo Amour, Scent by Issey Miyake, Bergamote by Le Labo…). Marketed as masculine, but I feel it’s feminine or perhaps unisex (though Eastern standards place rose on the masculine side). Imagine a mix of rose with pepper and a shy leather, and you’re smelling this marvel. It’s a dark fragrance. A delight in my opinion.
Exquisite.
After using it intermittently these past weeks, I must say it far surpasses the quality of many fragrances I’ve used before. There are only 4 notes, but mixed with such mastery that I can only say it’s SPECTACULAR.
So great. The strange but fantastic mix of gin and roses, followed by a pear-like wood and leather that tie it all together. Very easy to distinguish and enjoy, a work of aromatic art. Unisex, though more comfortable for men.
“Too much hype about the Duke”: at first it smelled like a niche-quality Declaration by Cartier, but it turned out to be a rich and distinct perfume. For me, it’s a leather scent where the rose is very green and, boosted by the gin and juniper, gives a masculine feel, not heavy but impactful. The floral is subtle and in the dry down woody accords emerge, but the juniper and pepper keep refreshing. I see it as very pleasant, masculine, and versatile. One of the easiest and most commercial scents from the house. I would own it without a doubt, but after other gems like Mr Sam or Halfeti Cedar. Rating: 8/10.
At first, it smells wonderful: a light rose with lovely pepper. Then it dries down to a caramelized, citrusy, and creamy scent that I don’t really like. After that, the sweetness disappears and you notice the rose-chili with pepper. Then the chili fades and the caramelized notes return, more subtle and to my liking. The dry down is peppery, slightly sweet (but not sweet-spicy), quite woody (I can’t believe there’s no sandalwood), and fresh-aquatic. In short, the dry down imitates a gin and tonic very well.
If you already have Le Labo’s Rose 31, this one is irreplaceable—it’s about 90% similar.
If you already have the Rose 31 by Le Labo, this one would be irreplicable, it’s 90% similar.
So happy. Opens with a lot of personality: fresh, spicy, and with a green, almost effervescent touch. The opening is addictive and puts you in a good mood. Yes, you can smell that gin that gives it magic, and I can’t stop sniffing it. The rose is more aromatic and verbal than floral, very fresh. Over time, the herbal part shines without losing freshness, which is curious. Everything then settles on elegant woods. It rates a 10 on a man, it’s unisex, elegant, and special, works almost all year. I’m loving it so much. Formal and great performance. Wow.
What a joy. It opens with character—fresh, spicy, and green, yet keeps that almost effervescent freshness. The opening is addictive and instantly lifts your mood. Yes, my mind catches that gin note that gives it magic… I can’t stop smelling it. The rose is mostly aromatic, crisp, and fresh, as if it avoids leaving a heavy floral imprint; it’s a different kind of rose. After a few minutes, without losing its freshness, the herbal notes really shine. Curious. Finally, with that vibe, everything rests on elegant woods. It rates a 10 on a man, but it’s totally unisex. Elegant, special, and works almost all year round… I’m really liking it. Formal and great longevity. Wow.
