What a pity they stopped making it; it was my first favorite perfume.
I love dark roses; Rose de Jacqueminot is a clear example—intense with wine notes, sweet and sensual. That formula was repeated countless times later. Gucci 3 completes the Rose Jacqueminot legacy by adding aldehydes that make it more narcotic, sensual, and deep with its chypre base. Gucci is incredibly rich. I think the difference with Diva or Paloma is that muguet/leather note that makes it bitter, sweet, and juicy all at once. For me, it’s the undisputed queen, especially in the extrait. Many 80s fragrances boast of having narcissus, but here that’s where I notice it most. It’s pure luxury and sophistication. Although it has leather, it’s not as prominent as in Fendi. It might be the most interesting floral chypre, but everyone has their own style. Some compare it to Paloma Picasso; they may end up sounding similar when both turn powdery and dark, but Paloma is more animalistic with a central carnation note and a very present green moss. I’m basing this on the eau de toilette and the extrait.
It’s such a shame I can’t get it anymore. My mom is missing one; it’s her favorite perfume and she absolutely adored it. It’s obsessively exquisite rose, the heart of a complex structure, the perfect example of a strict perfumer’s school when fragrances still had magic and superpowers. If only I could give one to her and another to myself, what luck.
Yesterday I finally got my first bottle of Gucci N3. I sprayed it once on my wrist to test it out, and I have to say, it smells almost identical to Yves Saint Laurent’s Y.
I tried this back in the 90s and loved it at first, but over time the scent started to bother me, so I put it away. I forced myself to finish the bottle even though I didn’t like it anymore, and the irony is that people would stop me to tell me how delicious it smelled. I can’t quite remember how it used to smell now, but I do remember all the compliments I got, even when I couldn’t stand it myself.
