Essence Oud by Ferrari

Typical rose-and-oud combo, which seems to be the trend for a while now. The components, and especially the oud, are quite synthetic (as one couldn’t expect otherwise), and generally, the fragrance is very linear and, above all, a bit heavy. But well, this is (as always) very subjective, since I personally can’t handle oud. It’s exactly the same fragrance I’ve heard a million times in recent years: from niches like Montale (they have about 10 of this style…) to designers like Dsquared2, Chopard, etc. Even Calvin Klein tried to advertise its horrible ‘Encounter’ saying it carried Oud… This wasn’t one of the worst, though I didn’t find it particularly inspired. It seems all brands are forced to release the same rose-and-oud aroma, theoretically targeted at a more oriental market. It’s not bad, and I think it’s the best in the Ferrari Essence line, but it’s not my taste. Longevity and sillage are heavy.

Best suited for cold days and definitely for night; in heat or during the day, it’s hard to tolerate. Two sprays last all day. I agree with someone else who says it smells like perfumes from old ladies or grandmas from years ago. It’s striking and impossible to ignore, but I’m not sure that’s a good thing. It’s not a common scent, nothing like that. I see it as perfectly unisex. I’m making this review after owning the full bottle for at least two years, not just a sample. I think that’s the better way to know a perfume and see how it behaves in different scenarios. Anyway, it’s not for me; someone who appreciates it more should enjoy it.

At times, it sounds like a vanity drawer with a Valentino lipstick and carmine that spent a few days in Istanbul’s Spice Bazaar. It captivates me, defines me, and I can’t stop smelling it. Scent: 9, Sillage: medium-high, Longevity: high, Performance: high.

If you’re looking for something clean, citrusy, and soft with a low profile, this isn’t for you. This is for the big leagues. The oud is intense, masculine but not heavy, dark, musky, opaque, and smoky. It’s destined for the most exclusive niche. Oud means wood in Arabic, but it’s not a piece of tree; it’s the aromatic resin. It’s known as the black gold of perfumers and is one of the most expensive ingredients, reserved for luxury. No doubt, it’s highly controversial; oud is an exquisite oriental scent that evokes different sensations, just like Thierry Mugler A Men: some love it, others don’t. It depends on pH and other variables.

This rose is deep, 100% masculine, a blood-red that, combined with the smoky wood base, creates an enigmatic, powerful, and refined masculine scent. The rose is the star, but the entire cast fits perfectly, like a red Ferrari showing off its beauty. It represents the brand challenging the competition. It’s not groundbreaking but it’s striking, provocative, and captivating. Scent: 9.0, moderate projection (about 2 hours), max longevity around 6-7 hours. Maybe discontinued and hard to find. Highly recommended.
