Fantastic job by Mugler on this flanker. Pure Tonka is a mix of coffee (present in the last hour but the most noticeable) with plenty of vanilla. If you’re from Mexico, it has a huge resemblance to Oxxo Cafés, very rich and sexy depending on your outfit (clearly formal). It hits its best moments on cold days and is a compliment machine for everyone who gets close to you.
Yesterday I had the opportunity to test this excellent Thierry Mugler fragrance in greater detail to write a more consistent review of what it offers on skin, free from biased concepts. Pure Tonka has a magnificent scent, very warm and well-linear, where its standout notes remain consistent from start to finish. It strongly reminds me of a traditional sweet from my region: coffee dulce de leche (manjar/cajeta) with coffee. That gourmand effect might be due to the coffee, vanilla, licorice, and a warm tonka bean, accompanied by bitter cocoa that tempers the sweetness and beautifies the composition. Lavender is almost imperceptible. As it dries down, it brings to mind Rochas Man, but lighter and less complex, with faint coffee and vanilla accords, more contrasted by fresh notes. In performance, it has moderate projection and very good longevity. Unfortunately, I don’t know many other perfumes from the A*Men line, as inexplicably many flankers don’t reach Colombia, but I believe this is, by far, the best one I’ve tried. Scent 9/10, Longevity 9.5/10, Projection 8/10, Versatility 8/10.
$75 online; in Argentina, that’s enough to buy sweet water, so let’s start with the price—very reasonable. It smells like caramel popcorn, or ‘pochoclo’ as we say here, right out of the bottle. Tonka bean and vanilla dominate the first two facets, with a bit of mint, cocoa, and eventually lavender in the trail. Projection is moderate, but longevity is quite good. When dried down and close to the skin, I do sense some coffee. In my opinion, it’s well-balanced; it’s not as explosive as the original A Men or Pure Cuir (the first with a bold opening and the second with a boozy leather note, both now shadows of their former selves thanks to reformulations). Pure Tonka is the first time I’ve tried it, so I don’t know how the previous versions would compare. I tested it at 30 degrees and preferred not to evaluate it then; today at 20 degrees, it’s perfect. Pleasant and unique, I recommend it. Only for cold days; on high temperatures, it does nothing. Price 7/10, Projection 6/10, Longevity 8/10. Best regards from Argentina.
A Men Pure Tonka says: let’s grab an expensive breakfast at Starbucks. It’s a more refined and serious take on Rochas Man. A beautiful aroma of tonka bean and coffee on a warm base that evokes comfort. The tonka isn’t too strong or dominant. Sweet, rich, aromatic, warm, irresistible, cozy, delicious, and unisex. Pure Tonka evolves over time, becoming more toasted and oriental, less sweet; although it’s rich and intense in the style of TM-A*Men, it manages never to be too sweet or intrusive. Over time, I notice hints of cocoa and burnt vanilla. The base adds a soft patchouli that balances out the heaviness. I get truly excellent projection and gigantic longevity—9 hours on my skin and even longer. This delicious, sensual scent is suitable for any time of day or night in cold seasons, especially for going out in the city at night. In my opinion, romantic dates can be worn by women.
After using this fragrance for a while and with winter upon us, I can give a more coherent review. As with anything, it has its good and not-so-good points. First off, it smells almost the same from start to finish; sometimes the coffee powder note is more prominent, other times the cocoa. Everything else is great. It’s an incredible scent: the first second is like a coffee-chocolate milkshake until the house signature emerges—the patchouli and wood that add seriousness, along with soft licorice in the dry down and, of course, tonka bean throughout. If you love gourmands, this is a safe buy; you won’t find loud notes like in A*Men, just woody sweetness, chocolate, coffee, and soft vanilla. I don’t detect any mint at all. In terms of longevity and projection, it’s the second strongest I own, after Dolce Vita by DUA: it projects like crazy, lasts until the next day, and stays on clothes for weeks with just 4 or 5 sprays. Scent 9/10, Projection 9.5/10, Longevity 9.5/10, Price 7/10.
What I perceive is pure, smoky, tender coconut. In air conditioning, it’s a sweetness that will definitely make people love you.
I simply love it. Smells like coffee with chocolate and vanilla, accented with lavender and mint. Good longevity with moderate sillage. The bottle I have is the rubber one; I believe it’s now plastic (November 2015), so if this came out in 2016, mine is one of the first. I agree with everyone: the atomizer is terrible, sometimes it sprays in streams, but it doesn’t bother me much. It pairs great with AXE Dark Temptation deodorant. What I dislike about gourmands is that after a while, close to the skin, it gives the sensation of having worked 8 hours in a bakery. I prefer it at the beginning with the lavender and mint mix, but eventually that disappears and only the sweetness remains.
I read all the reviews in Spanish and English and had to order blindly to get this masterpiece. It was a gift for my boyfriend, but I’ve already tried it. As a loyal Fragrantica user, I couldn’t resist. The bottle is uncomfortable (10/10): it’s wide (I have small hands, my bad) and the hidden atomizer doesn’t invite many sprays. Plus, it has super dirty-looking black plastic that looks like the FBI could extract your DNA from it; it gives it a cheap plastic look that ruins the first impression. But the important stuff is inside. The opening is a bit heavy; I expected mentholated freshness but the lavender screamed, so I went straight to the heart. After the lavender calmed down, it left a fresh scent, like a walk through a Mediterranean countryside (maybe the mint added some air). But the magic started at 3-4 hours: the tonka sounded, accompanied by coffee, cocoa, and vanilla. The perfect symphony. It was so rich, warm, like breakfast, like chocolate cake. Like coming home cold with a hot chocolate and a freshly baked cake. It conveys well-being, warmth, home. I can’t wait to wear it as a base for a movie night on the couch. Everything was balanced to be sweet and appetizing without being heavy. This phase captivated me because I love gourmands but can’t stand when they’re dense. In summary: the opening is very masculine due to the lavender, but then it turns into a perfect unisex gourmand. I’m considering layering it to neutralize the first hours and make it more feminine. The quality is excellent. It lasted seven hours with moderate sillage, ideal for this type. It catches attention from those around you, not the whole train. It was hard to find, only online; I don’t know if it’s discontinued. Price was around €50 for 100ml, great value. Just need to try it cold to evoke snacks and smiles. Rating: 5 stars.
The first time I wore it, it caught me off guard. I didn’t smell mint, but rather a strong, aggressive tobacco scent (which it doesn’t have) that seemed like someone had just been smoking. Hours later, it shifted to that sweet, soft tonka bean and vanilla base. It is the MOST LONG-LASTING perfume in my life: I first wore it Saturday afternoon, didn’t work Sunday, didn’t shower, and by Monday morning it was still on my skin (even faintly noticeable at night after showering and heading to work). One detail: my coworkers absolutely loved it.
Pure exquisiteness. The opening, heart, and that apothegmatic drydown are incredible; the longevity and sillage are massive, sticking to clothes and even the closet for up to a week. How many men’s fragrances are made this well?
Here’s how Pure Tonka smells: opening is chocolate liqueur with vanilla; after two hours, it turns into a cocada; then a mix of dulce de leche and coconut cookies. Finally, powdery cocoa that evokes old books. I wish it had more pink pepper and caramel in the base. Good stuff, but it’s all about personal taste.
Looking everywhere to buy it. Does anyone from Chile have info? Great reviews, but any similar alternatives?
Had it since yesterday, a spray version, and the projection is incredible—maybe even beats the classic. Lasting power is insane (still felt it at 7 PM after wearing it at 8 PM). For Argentinians: smells like the original with candy, licorice, and coffee notes at first, then coffee with vanilla, and finally chocolate. Regarding the packaging looking used: just wipe it with a cloth and it shines like new.
Similar to Givenchy Play Intense (available on Mercado Libre). You can grab Pure Tonka from the Zonaperfumes Facebook page.
Pure Tonka: the best of gourmet, outperforming Uomo Ferragamo and Intense in intensity, projection, and trail. If you overapply, you’ll get dizzy—it’s powerful. I sprayed it on my shirt and it was still there a week later. Women absolutely love it; it’s a conquest scent. I’d rate it 9 for aroma, 11 for everything else. It breaks barriers, grabs attention, people might hate or love you, but women will adore you. Hats off to this one.
I like it. Coffee with lavender, vanilla, and tonka in the base, earthy woody patchouli. Mid-stage caramel and cocoa. A gourmand for coffee and vanilla lovers, good performance, masculine. It falls short of Pure Havane when compared to Pure Malt. Best for autumn, winter, and night. Lasting longevity, heavy trail.
Smells exactly like a coconut stick, literally. Delicious with a huge fixative and long-lasting on skin.
1. Better coffee scent than Pure Coffee: this one is sweet, like Starbucks. 2. Brutal fixation: lasts 15 hours on skin and a week on clothes effortlessly. 3. Heavy but rich trail. 4. Everyone should own this.
Sweet to the point of being offensive. Only for winter or cold days; it’s suffocating in summer. Smells like a caramel cake. Longevity and projection are beast mode; it lasts weeks on clothes.
Every version of A*Men is a Bach fugue: the theme is tonka bean, and the counterpoint is the original DNA. After the intro, I was instantly won over. It’s addictive—a smoky sweetness with licorice notes that give it an unusual allspice character, rare for men. It’s peculiar, even more so than the legendary Havane, which I do like. Perfect for winter and night. Projects massively; the other versions last well but project less.
I’ve been able to compare this gourmand fragrance to a coffee latte or a mocha… well, the review is on my YouTube channel, MOY OLAF. Enjoy my perspective. A hug.
This perfume is way above expectations, very sweet but not overwhelming. I get a scent similar to a bakery in the city center, where upon entering, you’re hit hard by the smell of vanilla, cappuccino, and shredded sweet coconut. Good for fall/winter, but if used moderately, I think it wouldn’t go amiss on a summer night.
Right out of the bottle, it smells very similar to Guerlain’s L’Homme Idéal, with cherry alcohol notes and the powdery dry-down of tonka bean, but Guerlain’s is linear. Thierry Mugler isn’t from this planet; his fragrances evolve magically with your pH and the weather. In the cold, it lasts 2 or 3 hours, then turns sweet, creamy, caramelized like dulce de leche, with a bitter touch on a strong base of delicious licorice, resembling ripe cherry. Then comes the tonka bean lasting another 4 hours, with very good and strong projection. On hot days, the tonka bean comes out from the start, the licorice lasts a short while on skin, and the fragrance opens over a base of burnt and creamy caramel, slightly vanilla with tonka around. It’s magnificent; I fell in love. It lasts on skin until the next day.
You don’t go unnoticed; great and special scent.
Interesting, trying it now. It’s sweet, which usually doesn’t appeal to me due to cloyingness and low versatility in warm weather. That said, it seems the most durable and projected of all the Muglers I’ve tried, which generally have poor intensity. I don’t like applying it 10 times to make a statement; here, 5 sprays do the job respectfully. The tonka bean is there, but less than expected, mixed with vanilla and something like smoked coconut, chocolatey. The smoky touch is the most exceptional, frankly special and elegant. For the price, it’s a good option for half the year; for fall-winter, it’s ideal. It depends on what you’re looking for. Initially, I was searching for a personal scent, my signature, but increasingly I find it’s like dressing: you can wear different scents depending on the occasion, even keeping common notes. It’s a strange path, a perfumery hobby in the midst of many worlds and reflections.
Why did they discontinue this wonder?
An unprecedented masterpiece, this flanker of A*Men has me hooked. Never has a gourmand been this gourmand. From the opening, it’s pompous, nothing fresh, zero lavender or mint; it’s a sweet, almost edible accord. It smells like coconut condensed milk with caramel (licorice, I assume) over patchouli. It’s a coffee-type fragrance, but neither the tester nor the official website mentions this accord; instead, there’s a note of creamy cappuccino with vanilla, which reminded me of the reformulated Angel, quite unisex or feminine. Pure Tonka isn’t the mecca of originality; it’s Oriental-Amber and offers a caramelized praline, dense and full-bodied. We should appreciate a fragrance this gourmand. The good thing about the A*Men line is that almost all of them have Jacques Cavallier’s nose, so they share DNA but are different. This juicy Pure Tonka and its brother A*Men share the top and dry-down; the big change is in the heart: this Tonka is more accessible, with a creamy, pastry-like caramel sensation, not burnt sugar like the 1996 star. Totally recommended if you like sweets; I’m so careful not to take a bite out of the bottle that I might end up drinking the liquid.
You’ve always been my type, and I never told you. Your elegance and that smile that captivated everyone made you a ray of sunshine. Even though you were with someone else, seeing you as a friend was a balm for my wounds after a relationship that left scars. Walking with you felt like floating on a cloud. A*Men Pure Tonka is what I was looking for; it came late, but thanks to my favorite sales associate, a bottle (the last one) appeared. Without thinking, I bought it. Eight sprays stun and attract attention, with ideal potency to stand out. It’s not far from the original, but it follows its own path without burnt notes; tonka bean is the focus with a touch of coffee and licorice. The result is pleasant, hypnotic, and almost erotic. Perfect for these temperatures. It’s magical, like seeing you again after 10 years. I see you, you hug me, and time stands still. You grow but don’t change; you’re more of a woman and more beautiful. We talk about everything, and you tell me I smell spectacular (Mugler is Messi and CR7, Mozart and Chopin). I hope to see you again to tell you what I never said, accompanied by this wonderful scent that (coincidentally?) allowed me to find you again. A legend says if you can’t sleep, it’s because you’re in someone else’s dream. I’d like to be in yours, huddled together wrapped in Pure Tonka.
First and foremost, I want to emphasize one central point: skin pH. The more I dive into this world, the more I realize fragrances smell and last differently on everyone. That said, Pure Tonka is the most potent and dark fragrance from Thierry Mugler. At some point, it reminds me of Pure Havane. In my opinion, it’s the best from this house, by far.
I love it! On my skin, it’s almost edible—spicy licorice, probably. It’s like dark chocolate filled with liquor, or that cinnamon-and-sugar taste from cinnamon rolls. Totally delicious. The only downside is longevity; I have to reapply after a few hours. I consider it totally unisex. I’m definitely buying another bottle.
This perfume lasts more than 12 hours. It’s curious what happens to me with Mugler and its flankers: they’re not the ones that match my tastes the most, but I recognize certain quality and charm. This shares facets with Feve Deliciuese and especially with New Haarlem, which I consider better, although of course, it’s also much more expensive hehe. It’s a soft coffee, like a cappuccino, with vanilla, a touch of cocoa, and the tonka on top, all very mixed with few edges. The patchouli is there giving that Mugler DNA, and the rest of the notes are intuited but always at a lower volume. Personally, it’s a scent to wear once in a while. Despite not seeing it as linear as it seems at first, smelling coffee every day for more than 12 hours doesn’t quite end up seeing it hehe.
Undoubtedly, it’s a great gourmand; its liquorish touch of coffee and vanilla creates an addiction to wear in cosmopolitan cities, regardless of the cold or heat if you seek to delight yourself with its charm. I recommend it a lot; they’ve asked me a couple of times what perfume I’m wearing when I have it on. The downside on my skin is that it lasts less than I’d wish, maybe a maximum of 2 hours, but it’s a matter of pH, as the scent is highly recommended. Does anyone know where to buy it in Mexico because I can’t find it anymore?
A*MEN PURE TONKA by Mugler is a true gourmand bomb: you take it or leave it, but you can’t be indifferent. Of the male Muglers I know, this is my favorite, although I know what it represents. The original A*MEN is an ode to ethyl maltol, too much for me, even being a vocational diabetic. Its sugar level exceeds my tolerance and the capacity of my pancreatic islets to secrete insulin. This Pure Tonka is very sweet, but it lost that burnt tone to enter the realm of cocoa, coffee, and over-malted tonka bean, which I must admit I like a lot, I don’t know if so much to smell it as to eat it. It’s extraordinarily gourmand, the most gourmand of Mugler, with a pastry sensuality that immerses the greedy olfactory sense in a bottomless sea of lustful, greasy, and creamy pleasures. The mix of cocoa, coffee, and tonka bean is powerful, unbeatable, and barely nuanced by a dense, chewable, dark, and thick patchouli. Everything in Pure Tonka is thick: its trail, longevity, aroma, perception, taste, and texture. There are few perfumes that require knowing how to dose and control when to use. On a hot summer day, it can be a weapon of mass destruction. In an enclosed and poorly ventilated room, it can result in being lethal. In a very close approach, it can surpass the sensual to become psychedelic. Its accord is linear and perpetual. It’s not for measured gentlemen or discreet ladies; it’s for those who don’t care what people say and adore not going unnoticed. Pure Tonka by Mugler is a high, a buzz, a rush, and a petite morte with unpredictable consequences.
This is my best winter perfume: it projects for 7 hours and lasts 10. It’s sweet with a coffee that harmonizes with vanilla. If it’s very cold and you put on a scarf, it performs better; as the temperature of the neck rises, it potentiates the aroma and makes it more vanilla and moderate. Do you remember? It cost 100 dollars, but I had the fortune to buy it for 50 at an outlet. I bought it blind; you have to take risks to win, I like betting.
Little is said about this scent lately, but I used it again today and it’s incredible. It’s powerful, so I don’t use it often, but with a single spray, it lasts a long time. It smells like coffee, vanilla, a touch of coconut, and some chocolate; it’s a sweet bomb with a toasted effect. Imagine a cake with excess sugar and slightly burnt, very pleasant. It works perfectly as a niche: it’s not mass appeal, has great performance, and quality ingredients. I recommend it to lovers of the sweet; it’s unisex, cozy, and ideal for cold days or rain. Indoors, use a maximum of two sprays. Anyone can like it at any age. Greetings!
Exquisite gourmand fragrance, a combo loaded with coffee, vanilla, and tonka; to me, it smells like roasted coffee or a latte. Very good with powerful longevity. With P. Tonka, we have excellent projection and a giant longevity of 9 hours on my skin, even more. This sensual aroma is ideal for any moment, especially in cold seasons.
Luckily I only ordered a 5ml decant… I was looking for coffee perfumes and saw info on this one, also Halloween Man X (still not tried). Upon trying it, it smells like very strong incense, and although it passes the time, the scent fades without changing into something else; I tried to find the coffee and didn’t detect it. Maybe they sent me something else, so since it’s a decant, don’t take my opinion to heart and try it yourself. My cousin smelled it when it arrived and said it was awful; my sister shouted ‘god, it’s horrible, what did you put on?’ (I was laughing because I had notifications on). Now it’s on the shelf without any desire to touch it. Also looking for coffee, I ordered Ferragamo Tiramisu, but they didn’t have decants, so I grabbed the Uomo Signature (the black one), but I’ll count that in its profile.
It arrived today, I snagged it cheap on a forum. I’m missing the Pure Coffee and Pure Wood, but this is the queen. It smells like Havane and Malt with a sweet tonka fixation that isn’t cloying. Smelling it is seeing the shit that’s out there in designer perfumery today; it’s no wonder it doesn’t settle, it was niche in the 90s. It reminds me of Sauvage Elixir at the start: brutal lavender, sour with licorice, bursts of Havane and coffee/patchouli from the original Amén. In the dry down, hidden suede with a liquor like whisky à la Malt. Pure genius. If you find it, don’t hesitate.
What a well-made scent. Lots of personality and a distinctive character that attracts me. It’s a mix of spices, lots of coffee, sweet but not gourmand. The opening is totally dark and powerful, overwhelming before unfolding a wide range of accords that stimulate the senses. It’s very well balanced, performs great, and has a contained price. The dry down, which lasts for hours, adds a tasty and dark vanilla. Awesome. For cold seasons and formal or semi-formal occasions; it’s entirely nocturnal. This is something Batman could wear. I’m not sure if I’d keep it in my collection since it’s not versatile, but for everything else, it’s a great fragrance. Edit: I do feel a strong mint note in the initial phase.
This is a perfume with all the letters. I love the kilometer-long trails. The first time I tried it on blotter paper, I put it in my jacket; the scent soaked into it for days, though later I thought it was too invasive. Watch out, never judge a perfume solely by blotter paper. A year later, I smelled it again and had to buy it: it smells like a caramel macchiato coffee, the only way to describe that rich, sweet odor. It’s a gourmand as it should be. On skin, it lasts more than 24 hours, and the trail is kilometer-long; if there’s a breeze, you can smell it from the other side of the street. What a wonder, what a shame they don’t make perfumes like this anymore. Thanks Mugler for this fantastic and delicious fragrance that I treasured like gold in a cloth, even though it’s extremely discontinued. I sold it because, although I used 10ml, I applied it drop by drop due to its potency and rarely found an occasion to wear it, so I put it up for sale so someone who looks for it can enjoy it properly.
