Descripción

Givenchy Play Intense by Givenchy is an oriental fougère fragrance for men. Launched in 2008, this composition was created by Emilie Coppermann and Lucas Sieuzac. In its opening, mandarin and bergamot give way to a spicy and woody heart where coffee, pink pepper, and white cuaba flower (Amyris wood) share the stage. The trail settles on a warm and sensual base formed by tonka bean, patchouli, vetiver, and French labdanum.

  • Seems simple at first but has varied phases within the sweetness. The initial and middle citrus notes blend well with the chocolate that is felt almost until the end. That’s why it reminds me of Axe Dark Temptation, but more complex. For this winter season and afternoon-to-night outings, it’s excellent. On me, it lasts about 4 hours with moderate sillage, and then two more hours close to the skin.

  • Coffee aroma, sweet, and gourmand with a dark base but quite youthful. I love it and use it a lot lately. It reminds me of the middle phase of CH for Men, but darker and more intense. It’s sweet but not excessively so, making it perfect for any occasion and season, although it works best in the cold. Very good, 9/10.

  • Exquisite perfume, almost edible, not tiring, and very long-lasting. It goes well for any occasion. A 10 in everything, except the price, which is high in Argentina compared to other fragrances.

  • I had this fragrance a while ago and it’s very pleasant to the nose: a sweet, caramelized woody scent, almost gourmand, highlighting the amirys wood which I also sense in Play, though a bit tiring. It starts with light citrus and then explodes into coffee and spiced vanilla. The sweetness grows with guava and rounds out with a magnificent patchouli that Givenchy handles better than anyone. It’s warm, sweet, and enveloping; with generous doses, it stands out a lot. It’s simple, easy to wear, and pleasant, ideal for cold climates or spring. Today it’s a bit outdated; it gained some popularity, but due to its versatility, it serves all ages, best between 20 and 50. I used it a lot; the quality is noticeable, but in my case, my time has passed… unless one day I have a nostalgia attack.

I had this fragrance a while ago and thought I had already reviewed it, but I hadn’t. I tried it again and although I still like it, it’s weaker now. Givenchy Play Intense is warm, woody, and semi-sweet. I distinguish the amirys wood (which gives a resemblance to regular Play), coffee, and something chocolatey; that combination creates a very pleasant experience. Although it’s oriental, it’s not heavy, so it works for spring, autumn, and winter, during the day but preferably at night. It’s good for both young people and mature adults; it’s not so formal, so its best moment is for semi-formal or informal activities. Its only downside is the scarce longevity and low projection of the current formulation.

  • I bought it 4 years ago and now I have it again; the potency has decreased, although it remains very striking and the best in the men’s line.

Exquisite aroma. Starts with a marked orange note, wood, and a sweet resinous touch that becomes caramelized with patchouli until the end. It reminds me of A*Men but much softer. I recommend it for autumn and winter, especially at night for semi-formal events.

  • I’m obsessed with this perfume; without a doubt, it’s my favorite for men. It captivates you just by smelling it, absolutely fantastic!

  • I like its simple bottle; I guess the ‘Intense’ version is to distinguish it from the summer one. It smells great, starting with a muted citrus and coffee blend, sweet but not too much; it gives me an enviable chocolate vibe, haha. Then patchouli appears, dry yet strong and sweet with light woods. Overall, it smells like high-quality, tasteful chocolate. I used it a lot in autumn and winter; it’s ideal for night outs. It has that addictive gourmand touch that never goes out of style, compliments always come in. It lasts on skin and clothes, with moderate sillage and short projection. I think it suits almost any man; I hadn’t been using it and gave half a bottle to my dad. I thought it had lost its punch, but with this one, it smells like calm and experience, with a young soul eager to please. I used it because it reminded me of Axe Dark Temptation, and it worked great as a complement.

I have this fragrance, but when I use it, after 30 minutes, it’s wood, wood, with a touch of coffee.

Ehhh, I’ve had bad experiences with fragrances I expected more from, but in most cases, I indicate that every pH is different. The person makes the perfume, not the perfume itself, and I disagree with Mr. Luis Heisnten. This fragrance maintains an almost unique scent. Despite reviews like Beto Ruiz’s about reduced projection, it remains one of the most masculine on the market, even without current advertising or the advertising it deserved in 2008. I can say ‘okay’, but GIVENCHY PLAY INTENSE IS LOVE. If it lasts more than 7 hours and is felt at a distance, most girls or those I know at work have liked it a lot; they know when I change perfumes, and when I put on Play Intense, they say: ‘that’s the perfume I like’. In summary: buy it, it’s something sweet, mysterious, nocturnal, diurnal, cool. The tangerine, wow! I think if Givenchy didn’t pull it off the market despite rumors, it’s because it still maintains an interested audience. I was young then, barely 15 (2008), but now it’s a delight, and I even have the OVERSIZE just in case.

  • I have a love-hate relationship with this fragrance. Its scent is a delight, the opening is strange and citrusy, like a strong tangerine liqueur, then quickly reveals the sweet scent that isn’t strong coffee; it reminds me more of a dark chocolate truffle filled with dulce de leche, with a very soft coffee touch and almost imperceptible citrus notes giving a spicy kick. Why love-hate? Love for its beautiful scent from start to finish. Hate because it projects nothing on my skin. It lasts about 6 hours, then a couple more, but right against the skin. The strangest thing is that once I went out at night, came home in the morning, left my shirt on a chair, and the next day, when I entered, I felt Play Intense was still projecting from the shirt. Normally I use it for personal enjoyment or a cool night when I know I’ll be very close to someone.

It’s hard to find now and it’s a shame because its scent is exquisite. This EDT is dark, intimate, and warm. A soft and sexy invitation. Maybe there are others that resemble it, but having several perfumes in my collection, I miss this one. It’s really good.

Hello to all forum members, happy 2019 and greetings from Panama. Something sad because the Givenchy Play Intense no longer exists in main stores, one of my first epic fragrances. Sales assistants say they only stock the new ones due to space, and it won’t be restocked unless there’s a special edition. I got the last one thanks to my favorite assistant who lent me the only liquidation piece at a 40% discount. Very curious is that in my country, I’ve only smelled that scent on myself; I haven’t seen other men wearing it, unlike One Million Intense or 212 VIP. A pity. If any forum member knows if they are still being made in France or where to buy them online, please confirm. I’ll have to walk around the country looking for Indian stores that might still have them. What a shame, now they only commercialize the Gentleman line, which doesn’t appeal to me much. DEFINITELY GIVENCHY PLAY INTENSE WILL BE UNIQUE FOR CENTURIES. I’M STILL SAD, I STILL HAVE AN EMPTY OVERSIZE BOTTLE AND A 100 ML ONE THAT I HAVEN’T USED.

Hi forum people, what can I say about this little gem? I bought it with distrust due to reviews about ‘low sillage’, but it depends on skin pH. I put it on at 6:30 AM and had sillage until 9; now it’s 12:48 and I still smell it on my skin. I apologize for contradicting others. Coffee, chocolate, and warm woods, a cappuccino with a woodsy aroma, excellent for the Buenos Aires winter. I think it was the best purchase in a world where everyone smells like Million or Invictus, which disgust me when I get on the subway (I’m not saying they aren’t good, but they are very overused). Givenchy and Dior are ahead of the rest.

In general, the beauty of gourmand scents is that delicious sensation that gives mischievous sensuality and takes us back to childhood memories. Givenchy Play Intense is a pleasant but too timid scent that doesn’t justify the outrageous prices. If it were to fight other gourmands, it would have few chances. Honestly, it’s not bad, but it’s not great. Spices, coffee, citrus, and vanilla make a decent fragrance that doesn’t stand out against its competitors. The word ‘intense’ is out of place; if you’re looking for better performance, Rochas Man or Legend are superior. If you prefer a subtle gourmand, give it a try.

  • It’s not discontinued… Today I bought the 150 ml bottle (oversize). I loved the subtlety of the coffee, not bitter but creamy like a cappuccino, warm, aromatic, gourmet, sweet, and masculine. I love smelling coffee with finely attarced woods, ideal for a winter night. Projection is ‘give me a hug so you can smell better’ (like the wolf in Little Red Riding Hood). Longevity, please last one more hour! It’s seductive and perverse. But bad luck, Halloween Man X beats it: that one is pure caffeine, intense and aggressive, with rich tonka bean, incense, and sweet cinnamon alongside bitter coffee. Although I prefer the warm delight of Givenchy. Note: there are already several options like Halloween Man X, Calvin Klein Red, Kokoriko, Lacoste Noir, and the already discontinued and best of all, Givenchy Irresistible.

  • Happiness floods over me. After years of searching, I found one in a perfumery in Buenos Aires. Alongside 212 VIP, it was one of my favorites when I first started exploring top fragrances. Today, with more experience, I confirm that the nearly extinct Play Intense is a cult masterpiece. Longevity and sillage depend on the skin, but in my case, it lasts about 7 hours with good projection (about 1.5 meters in the first 3 hours). Coffee is always present: it starts playful with bergamot, moves through pepper and tonka bean, and slowly fades with vetiver and labdanum. In a few hours, its evolution summarizes the life of a man who matures but never loses his mystery. It’s original, intense but not invasive, with a lot of personality. It smells like work, parties, suits, and sex (in the best sense, ha!). Its versatility is medium-high, valid for days not exceeding 20 degrees, though it shines more at dusk and at night. Perfumes like this are needed. If coffee is the main note, compared to other mass-produced ones that are just ‘diluted coffee’, Play Intense is like enjoying a coffee with Ethiopian beans. So well-executed it seems dedicated to connoisseurs, probably the best discontinued gourmand for men by Givenchy. 10/10. LONG LIVE COFFEE.

  • Homeostasis

My go-to perfume, a true extinct gem for which I have four bottles saved. Play Intense is a pure ode to roasted coffee.

  • Homeostasis

For me, it’s the best designer fragrance that exists; that coffee note is seductive and distinctive. On my skin, it performs extraordinarily. This perfume unicorn will remain a commercial masterpiece; I keep 4 unopened bottles. It’s the perfume I’d wear for the rest of my life. Please, Givenchy, let us enjoy it again peacefully.

  • carlosjhv

Perfect for winter nights, family gatherings, or couples. It’s intimate, but the coffee scent is incredibly pleasant. The citrus fades quickly to let the delicious coffee settle on the skin. Performance is good but close to the skin, about 4–5 hours; it’s not a bomb, but if you love coffee, it will accompany you well at home or at casual get-togethers. I can’t find it in stores anymore; it seems discontinued. Fortunately, I noticed it before, and it never had the hype of today’s releases.

  • BassoProfumo

It seems it went unnoticed in the perfume community, but few fragrances feel as sophisticated and elegant to me as this one. So far, nothing has seemed as well-balanced. What I do remember is its scarce sillage; it feels quite shy.

  • High-altitude coffee! It’s a full-on gourmand. It’s incredible that if it were released today, in 2021, it could win Fifi Awards. It’s very sweet with the coffee present, and once it dries, it becomes realistic with vanilla; an almost perfect combination. The downside is it’s hard to find. A similar option is Rochas Man; I take this chance to recommend both widely.

  • Luis 507 Pty

With nostalgia, I’m reviewing it again, briefly. Until today (01/11/2021), I haven’t encountered anything so special and unique; it’s a pity Givenchy discontinued it. It was discreet but perfect for demanding people like me. Thanks, Givenchy, even though it hurts not to see it anymore. I keep one bottle, and it will last forever; I hope they make a special edition so I can buy it again. Greetings from Panama.

  • Krishnamurti

Givenchy Play Intense: a sparkling, spicy opening with soft pepper and sweet citrus like lime, nothing acidic. The balsamic, woody base with patchouli adds a fresh, mentholated touch, perfect for heat, though it fades quickly; best used below 25°C. Over time, the freshness and sweetness blend into a creamy, chocolatey atmosphere, like feminine praliné—not direct coffee or chocolate. It’s delicious but not gourmand, with moderate trail and lasting 2–3 hours in temperate weather. If it’s discontinued, Black XS (the floral one) is 90% identical. It’s like expecting a Pantera and hearing Coldplay; I thought it would be an explosion, but it was just a brief sigh. STOP and EXIT!

  • LUIS HEINSTEIN

I think it’s been discontinued. I bought it in 2015, and the opening is delicious, but after 15 minutes, it turns into generic coffee and tonka, losing strength by the 30-minute mark and staying close to the skin for only 3–4 hours. It doesn’t last on clothes either, and since fabric has no pH, it’s weak with no projection. Don’t miss out on anything extraordinary; try Halloween Man X or Rochas Man, which are still in production and affordable.

  • What a great surprise! I bought it blind and was worried due to mixed reviews, but it lasts incredibly long and projects well. Right after spraying, it smells like a chocolate-mocha dessert; once it dries, it’s like Halloween meets roasted coffee and Ferregamo Uomo (a sweet tiramisu). I’ve never heard Rochas smell like this. I applied 5 sprays at 6 PM in Yucatán (30°C) for a party, and it lasted until 2 AM, lingering on my clothes until the next day; my girlfriend even said it still smelled strong! It’s a 10/10!

  • I’ve already mentioned it below, but I’m coming back because it deserves to be on every shelf. I never get tired of it. That coffee-and-amber spirit is a timeless wonder; it doesn’t project much, but it lasts forever on my skin. I’m lucky to have sealed bottles, so this will be my signature until they run out. It’s the star of my collection, even outperforming the most expensive niche scents.

  • eduardosbaiza

I wore this when I was young, and it brings back a thousand memories; it’s fresh, sweet, and playful—a true gem. What a shame it’s no longer in stores. If you come across one at a good price, buy it now!

  • For a while during my adolescence, it was my signature nighttime fragrance, how many unforgettable moments. Thanks to God, I found a 3.4oz bottle at a pharmacy in my country, the Dominican Republic; I didn’t hesitate twice for $64, a gift. I really feel it lost its potency because it’s an old batch, according to my research, but I’m happy about the price I paid for it. I repeat, how many crazy moments… I could recall just by smelling it.

  • Why doesn’t it exist anymore? That’s the constant question… That scent of coffee, wood, vanilla, and citrus… it’s almost perfect. They say good things don’t last, and I only had two bottles thinking it would exist forever… Sad. I’ve seen some used ones at excessive prices, though if it were original and not a refill, I wouldn’t hesitate… Hopefully, it exists again someday… Pleasant memories… And if its longevity was average, those who criticized it were right; it was a good fragrance… Rochas gives it a touch, but it doesn’t last as long as this… I’ll try the Halloween x…

  • Mariiito507

I’ve never received more compliments for it. My first bottle was in high school, so many memories and girlfriends thanks to that bottle, around 2009. Since then, I’ve owned four bottles; it couldn’t be missing from my collection. We should petition Givenchy to bring it back without reformulating the original bottle, which has the symbols ⏪▶️⏭️. I felt the last two bottles had better longevity; they smelled similar but lasted less than the first two.

  • Much more refined than the Play EDT, with lasting longevity and moderate sillage. Citrusy at first, then it shifts to coffee, patchouli, and tonka; it was ideal for office use.

  • Unmatched scent. I had it back in 2009 and bought another bottle in 2015 without thinking that I’d never find that aroma again. Nowadays, I’ve tried to find something similar to Rochas Man, but it doesn’t even resemble the characteristic notes of Givenchy Play Intense. I hope someday they bring it back and launch it unchanged. 🙁

  • FanDeDuneVintage

I love Rochas Man devoutly, but I must say Givenchy Play Intense took these casual yet balanced gourmand scents to another level, adding a more elegant and mysterious aura. It’s one of those perfumes that some naive collectors took for granted, thinking they’d be on the market for decades. It was so much a part of the shelf landscape, as accessible as fresh-baked bread, that we never considered the possibility that, on a day we least expected, it would be discontinued, just like great fragrances that left us orphaned without warning. We went from appreciating it with a “Are you kidding? You’re everywhere, even in the soup” to “I can’t believe you just disappeared out of nowhere. Please come back!”. Its coffee-vanilla, woody, slightly smoky, and earthy opening, with a hint of pepper, leads into a pleasant and cozy blend that dresses the skin in distinction and playful masculinity, rounded out by inked vetiver, intoxicating patchouli, and caramelized tonka bean, adding a beautiful contrast and depth. I maintain that Givenchy is one of the brands offering the best-executed gourmand launches; many are characterized by a perfect balance between refinement and versatility. In plain words, for me, Givenchy Play Intense smells like a well-dressed guy with a calm, determined gaze, who trims his beard without shaving it off, wears predominantly dark semi-formal clothing, and maintains a discreet smile that reveals security, satisfaction, and self-confidence—the kind that naturally sparks attraction. I keep about two milliliters of a bottle left by my beloved, now passed-away brother; this bottle is perhaps part of his unfinished business that I’ve been entrusted with, and it would be wise to use it up to the last drop, as an act of detachment and gratitude for what we had and what’s leaving, as a prelude to making space for the new, which could include (why not?) a full-content piece of this superb example. Rating: 9.5/10

  • Exquisite, unique, and unparalleled perfume. I’ve tried other fragrances with coffee notes, but none compare. Fortunately, I managed to get a bottle a couple of years ago that I treasure and avoid using too much so I don’t finish it.

  • SinLimites

This perfume blew my mind back when I was young. My uncle owned it, and I always borrowed it because there was no way to stand out without it. The scent is impressive, clings to the skin, and lasts for hours. I think it’s perfect for anything, though maybe my nostalgia and years of not smelling it have made me rate it a bit too high. I hate that it’s discontinued; it should come back, and if it does, I’ll buy three so I never lose it again. Haha. It’s mandatory to buy it if you find it, even if it’s impossible. 9/10
