Bvlgari Aqva Amara is a woody aquatic fragrance for men. Launched in 2014, this composition was created by perfumer Jacques Cavallier Belletrud. The top note features Sicilian mandarin, giving way to a heart of aquatic notes and neroli. The base rests on frankincense and Indonesian patchouli leaves.

Fresh, vibrant, charming, and addictive on hot days… wish it had more longevity and sillage 🙁

  • Bvlgari has established a conceptual framework in aquatic perfumes, but I’d remove ‘aquatic’ and add ‘maritime.’ Aqua Amara evokes a fresher, perhaps nocturnal sea breeze compared to its predecessor Marine. The dusty opening between floral-herbal and citrus reminds me of walking by the shore with wind, waves wetting my feet, and stirring up sand. The opening is better crafted and could pass as unisex if not for its bitter and earthy points. I perceive a sharp tangerine, not sweet. As it progresses, linearity fades to let dirty, dusty marine algae veins stand out, which I like. It even seems saltier than Aqua Marine. The incense adds depth to the floral notes; it feels like a fine luxury shaving cream! On my skin, it has moderate to heavy projection and longevity that exceeds 48 hours on clothes. I don’t see it for the office; rather, for open spaces and occasions with feeling. It has pleasant romantic and nostalgic aspects, ideal for conquest, family, or close friends. It’s a well-executed job worth having, especially for those who haven’t known the sea or don’t live on the coast; it revives those moments. Jeremy did a versus against Virgin Island Water by Creed… for a reason he did it, totally recommended.

Another victim of aggressive marketing: it has a predominant citrus touch, but olibanum incense makes it dirty. I imagine that ingredient plus patchouli gives it longevity, but the fragrance is NOT refreshing as expected for a hot summer; on the contrary, the new flanker Atlantique is a burst of freshness. Scent 6, Longevity 9, Projection 8.

  • The opening of Bvlgari AQVA AMARA starts with Sicilian tangerine citrus, but quickly that bitter tone of Tunisian neroli appears, with a herbal facet and a green champagne effervescence effect. I’d say it has touches of bergamot and ginger that give it spice and fizz. In the evolution, it smells like sea rocks with green algae and salt, like waves crashing against cliffs, ozone, and freshness. It’s incredible how they recreate almost intangible natural aromas. It also smells like granite, marble, and sandstone being cut in a quarry; a cold, petrous scent hard to describe. In the dry-down, I don’t notice patchouli or incense, but rather intensified bitter herbs. The scent isn’t easy; it lacks usual sweet or woody components; it’s not gourmand or fruity-chouli. That’s why it didn’t have much success. I’m a fragrance all-terrain vehicle. Projection and longevity are moderate; I recommend over-applying. Ideal for summer temperatures, unisex, and for any age.

  • I just applied it for the first time and I was fascinated. That exuberant mix of tangerine, olibanum, and the fresh floral touch of neroli transported me to the Mediterranean coast: rocky, humid, and warm. A Bvlgari jewel.

  • It took my breath away, little to add: it’s exotic and leaves no one indifferent. The tangerine is done right; it smells like the inside of the peel with floral nuances and green vegetation mixed with sea salt. At first, it doesn’t seem interesting, but then the neroli appears, giving it sweetness and a floral body, blending with that salty and green note that makes it polarizing. If you like citrus and salt, you’ll love it; if not, better to stay away. I don’t perceive patchouli or incense as such, but the fixative and projection are good; it projects for about 3 hours, then fades but lasts another 8. I don’t see it for daily use; it’s more casual or for parties depending on the context. I wore it to university and women showered me with compliments, saying they adored it. Regarding Aqva Pour Homme, it’s more ‘earthy’ but retains the salty and green DNA; it’s a good flanker, though Pour Homme remains my favorite.

  • After reading many positive reviews, I decided to buy it blind. I was worried it might be too mature, but after testing it on my skin, it’s spectacular. It’s not a youthful scent, but it’s not for older men either; I’d say it’s for ages 25 and up. Usually, I’m not into fresh perfumes, but that dirty, spicy, and bitter touch won me over. It reminds me of tangerine peel, leaves, that bitter scent that lingers on your hands after pulling fruit from the tree. It smells bitter and great. To me, it reminds me of Dior Sauvage, but with that sharp tangerine note always in the foreground. Longevity and projection are incredible for a fresh scent. The bottle is one of the best in my collection. Final note: 9/10.

Don’t be disappointed the first time: at first, it smells like dishwasher detergent with an orange scent, but the dry-down is magical and beautiful. It turns bitter, smoky, fresh aquatic, and floral; I love that balsamic touch. I bought two 100ml bottles for $57 on Notino, although it’s discontinued and might show up online. For me, when the bottle is full, it smells different, but as the content runs out, it gets better; the top notes and dry-down smell much better, very elegant.

Well, I have to talk about this unique fragrance that’s my favorite. I was interested in Bvlgari because of the bottle design; I tried Marine and Atlantique, but they didn’t convince me. At 22, I’m looking for something less serious. Amara wasn’t available in any store until I tried it at a shop that’s now gone, and it fascinated me. Unlike my other perfumes that just smell like ‘perfume,’ Amara smells like something real. Neither Sauvage nor La Nuit got me as many compliments, but when I wore it before heading to college, classmates said, ‘that smells good.’ Not everyone likes it, so I imagine that’s why they discontinued it, but it’s so unique that it hurts that people don’t get it. Rating: Sillage 8, I smell it all day. Longevity 8, lasts long enough. Scent 9, very original but polarizing. Versatility 6, not for parties or the office due to that disjointed citrus tone; ideal for a summer walk or vacation. It’s specific for daytime, though I’d consider it for a chill summer hangout.

  • I just bought this gem blind and, luckily, found a lady with an Original Tester of 100 ml. I was looking for it, but it’s discontinued and no longer sold in my country. It was love at first sniff, nothing I’d smelled before. A scent of oranges mixed with earth and sea, fresh but strong and charismatic. It doesn’t seem like an Aqua or a summer fragrance because, although it’s fresh, its longevity and sillage are admirable on my skin. Maybe I’ve found my personal fragrance after trying almost 30 perfumes; I still have much to explore, but this Aqva Amara hasn’t left me indifferent. What a pity they discontinued it; you’ll surely receive many compliments and create a pleasant memory effect in those around you. I highly recommend it.

  • Today I tried this perfume after searching for several days since it’s discontinued; it wasn’t easy to find. I had high hopes that it would be different from the other Bulgari Aqua scents, but on my skin, it wasn’t. It smells the same from start to finish and has a note that smells bad on my skin: the aquatic notes give me a headache. I’m sorry it’s not for me.

  • A very good fragrance; along with Aqva Marine, these are my favorites from Bulgari. You can detect a strong, bitter orange mixed with aquatic notes. The bitter orange gives it personality; not everyone likes it because it’s not generic, though some say it smells great. I wear it in the mornings and hot days here in Costa Rica. It lasts a long time on skin and has acceptable projection. Don’t buy blindly if you can still find it, but it’s excellent for a collection.

  • Aqva Amara is very unusual. Sometimes I smell orange dish soap, which bothers me, but its magic lies in the dry-down. It’s not easy to wear, and when people get close, they don’t always like it. I wear it in summer evenings and nights for personal enjoyment. I think it would overwhelm me in stifling heat, as it’s not like other Bulgari aquatics.

  • Just as its name suggests, it smells a bit of bitter oranges and stays that way. I really like its dry-down. I’ve had it for over a year and wear it during the day, whether it’s hot or cool. On very hot or humid days, I use less because it becomes more intense. I wore it every day this week. On Friday, a coworker told me it smelled great. I asked if she noticed because I sprayed it at 7 am and it was already 2 pm; by then, it wasn’t noticeable to me. She said yes. I showed her the perfume, and after smelling it, she did something unexpected: she sprayed three times, saying it smelled different. There were three other girls nearby who saw what she did; they all came over, smelled it, and did the same. So, we all smelled like Aqva Amara. The opening was a bit sharp but pleasant, and for the rest of the afternoon, I could feel their dry-down trail on them, which was very pleasant. In my opinion, it’s a good fragrance that takes citrus into a different, more challenging context. When you wear it, bring out your extroverted, playful side. It has character, and there may be days when our mood isn’t up to it. It’s also interesting that it’s not well-known in my circle. It’s become scarce in big department stores, so when I found it at a small shop, I didn’t hesitate to buy it. Worth it.

  • Kingkongdragan

I have a 100 ml bottle that I’ve only sprayed twice to test it; it comes with the box intact. If anyone’s interested, email me at: [email protected] Thanks.

  • Enric_vlc

I love it. Upon application, you can detect the bitter orange and a very clean touch. Very fresh and long-lasting; on me, it lasts 6 hours with 5 sprays. My wife loves it too. Highly recommended.

  • Cata-Rica

Aqva Amara is gorgeous. The opening with bitter citrus and water notes can be strong, but I love it because they’re my favorite fruits. Then it becomes linear, with a floral neroli that contrasts beautifully with the bitter water; that duality is its charm. It has a herbal touch with coriander and patchouli, making it very masculine. It’s casual, semi-formal, perfect for spring and summer. The performance is incredible: 5 sprays give me 5 hours of projection and up to 14 hours of longevity. The best part? It reacts amazingly with sweat, as if you just put it on. It delivers so much. Great for daily wear, outings, or sports, but best for informal gatherings and avoiding strong-smelling environments. It never fades. What a disappointment that it’s been discontinued. I understand that you either love it or hate it, regardless of performance. It’s one of those fragrances designers often avoid because it’s so polarizing. And that’s why Atlantique targeted it.

  • rtano0910

Finally found this perfume after months of searching. I don’t understand how they could discontinue it; it’s exquisite. Upon application, it smells like delicious bitter orange with very fresh aquatic notes. It reminds me of summer, a rocky beach. Perfect for spring and summer. Longevity and sillage are extraordinary for an aquatic: about 12 hours on skin and a meter-long trail.

  • Isaac Blanco

I prefer the opening over the base; it feels flat and simple, but it lasts well and projects nicely at a distance.

  • I just smelled this fragrance and I must say, respecting the other reviews, that in a humorous tone it reminded me of green juice with celery. Upon analyzing it, I notice the neroli predominates quite a bit along with the tangerine, and underneath those notes, the incense, which makes it as its name says, ‘Amara’, bitter. It’s too strong for my taste. If you plan to buy it blind, don’t, because not everyone may like it or it may fixate the same way for them. I had high expectations regarding citrus aromas, but they are too strong. I still think it has celery, or perhaps it’s the bitterness of the neroli, because it’s like the orange leaf when you squeeze it and the smell comes out, very similar but intense. I repeat, it’s not bad but it’s not one of my favorites. They mention it’s similar to Clinique Happy, and well, nothing to do with it; Happy is much softer. If you like aromas that aren’t so common, this is the fragrance for you.

  • I received this perfume thanks to an exchange with my colleague Demopop. I had a huge interest in trying this unfortunately discontinued Aqva Amara, and now, with the good weather, I can finally give it optimal conditions. Bvlgari presents us with an intoxicating bitter tangerine or orange, sweetened with aquatic notes to make it more bearable in summer. It’s a fantastic scent to take to the pool, the beach, or after a refreshing shower. Like the entire Aqva line, it has excellent fixation and outstanding longevity, considering that Bvlgari fragrances, in general, tend to be weak in sillage and duration. It might be a scent not to everyone’s taste, but I have loved it.

  • byrgertidesson

I bought it on sale because I love the entire Bvlgari family and the Aqva line. It’s the strangest of all, and to be honest, I didn’t like it much at first, perhaps due to my age or my recent niche perfume purchases that gave me a second chance. Today, almost halfway through the bottle, I decided to hide it so I wouldn’t finish it. It smells like bitter oranges on the beach after several days there, almost decomposed (which is why some think it smells like boiled egg or trash), but don’t get confused, it’s extraordinary if your nose is trained. As it evolves, it returns to the aquatic lines of its family, although on my skin it doesn’t have fresh notes. I wear it during the day in autumn, winter, or rainy summer days.

  • I ordered it on Amazon and it took so long I thought it was lost, but I’ve been using it for a month. The design is classic for the Aqua line by Bvlgari, in a bronze box, and this bottle is the prettiest in the series. The scent upon spraying smells like bitter tangerine, just like the peel, then it blends with salty notes, neroli, and a very light touch of incense. It’s not strong or hard to understand as some say. The longevity is moderate but the projection is good. I bought it for the price, as it’s ridiculous elsewhere since it’s discontinued. It didn’t captivate me totally but it stands out from the common, which I like. We’ll see if I keep it or swap it. Note: they aren’t bitter oranges, they are tangerines; the peel of this one smells much more bitter. I recommend it if you find it at a good price and you like aquatic scents, which aren’t my favorites, but I do like this one.

  • To my nose, the olfactory family classification is incorrect. It seems more like Citrus Floral Aquatic. It’s perfectly unisex. Longevity and sillage are brutal, excellent for summer and also for spring. Just be careful with over-application, especially in small, enclosed spaces.

  • Ivan Timothy

Very rich fragrance, masculine, refreshing, and sexy, it’s a pity they discontinued it (probably the least liked flanker in the series). It smells like the beach at 6 PM, the sun setting, a cool breeze, and someone eating salted oranges on the sand. Very rich, but not for everyone. The only downside is that it doesn’t last long (about 3 or 4 hours) with poor projection, probably because it’s citrus-based. 9/10.

  • Persefonex

I searched a lot for the rarity they claim, but I don’t see it as rare. It opens citrusy, just orange peel, nothing special at first. Then it evolves into interesting marine notes, and yes, it made me want to wear it to the office. I consider it unisex; in fact, the seller showed it to me as a women’s fragrance. The dry down is amazing, that light patchouli perfuming the air. I could wear it every day as a signature. It’s the poor cousin of Terre d’Hermès. If you like this, wear Amara daily and Terre for special occasions.

  • Finally, I was able to try this perfume thanks to my good friend Iván. So much has been said about it that my first impression was somewhat disappointing; perhaps I expected something different from what I found on the first spray. Not spectacular, just different. The truth is, my perception has changed with wear. It’s truly a beautiful perfume with a certain original touch. You can clearly smell that note of tangerine or orange taking a bath in salt water. Those aquatic notes seem to be shamelessly tons of ambroxan, giving it character, depth, and a longevity beyond expectations. In its last traces, you can perceive a touch of woody patchouli and something green that doesn’t hold back the power of the sea but rather pushes it forward. I insist, I was surprised by its longevity, a 6-hour performance that feels easy, probably helped by the office air conditioning. Rich, tasty aroma, ideal for going out to a terrace in summer, even better by the beach to feel clean and confident. I’d even say it’s attractive. I bet it’s the best in the Aqva series for most people and for my personal taste too. It’s a pity that fewer units remain and at high prices.

  • I spent years searching for this fragrance at a good price until I found it two months ago on Fragrancenet in the USA (50ml) thanks to a friend of my wife who was traveling there and could pick it up. A week later, she found it in a Mexico group with a trusted seller, and I bought it this time in 100ml. Both are from the 2014 batch, the first year it was released, and indeed, its longevity is quite impressive for a fresh scent. To be honest, I absolutely love it because it’s the type of aroma I enjoy and it works perfectly for hot weather. However, if you ask me which is the best in the Aqua line to truly capture the vibe of the sea, it would be Aqua Marine; this one was hyped too much by Jeremy, and honestly, there are better options for heat, even more affordable ones. For now, I have enough for several months or even years.

  • Another excellent fragrance that inexplicably has been discontinued. Its opening is very sharp, with a predominant bitter orange that gradually sweetens and blends with the aquatic and, above all, floral notes, giving a fresh and clean sensation once dry that lasts until the end. A daytime perfume, ideal for spring/summer, different from what most people usually wear. Its longevity and trail are notable, above average for this type of ‘fresh’ perfume. I’ve read here that it’s similar to Terre d’Hermès, and honestly, the opening does share some similarity (especially the bitter orange), but after a short while they take different paths. For me, a very good option; as long as it can be found at a reasonable price, it will always be in my collection. Note: 9/10.

  • This fragrance was my husband’s favorite after I gifted it to him. Now I can’t find it anymore (Argentina); does anyone know a dupe or something similar? It’s a pity I can’t get this amazing fragrance.

  • Today I had the chance to smell it because I read reviews saying it’s great but not suitable for every nose. My first impression was probably like everyone else’s… citrusy opening but bitter; don’t expect something sweet at first, but after a few minutes it feels sweet and fresh. I liked the evolution. It’s a scent different from typical aquatics. It reminded me a bit of Boss In Motion with a sweet orange. But Aqua Amara feels more adult, less youthful. Good fragrance…

  • I see the top note is listed as mandarin, but my nose perceives it as very bitter orange peel, accompanied by neroli, and it lasts the entire life of the fragrance.

  • Lucas cuello

Exquisite perfume, without a doubt… the mandarin scent is incredible. It’s a shame I haven’t been able to find it for years; I miss it.

  • Gentil vagabond

Pungent citrus, different from everything we see on the market. It’s not the best, but I miss its good projection and that intoxicating scent every summer, a fragrance of vanguard and distinction, highly recommended.

  • Mauro.A.81

A citrusy, salty opening, a bit strong but pleasant, that lingers and ends up slightly sweet. Very good quality and longevity. I used it on some summer afternoons; totally memorable.

  • It’s a pity they’re discontinuing perfumes this good. In my own words, I’d describe it as a bitter marine orange 😅. Good projection and longevity. I was lucky to find two of these gems at a local pharmacy, one 50ml and one 100ml, a year ago.

  • To be honest, it’s a very flat and simple fragrance, yet not common. The opening is good, reminiscent of the orange in Terre d’Hermès but without the earthiness. I feel the opening dominates the entire life of the perfume. Good projection, longevity, and trail. It’s not my favorite in the Aqva line; I think Marine is much better. If it’s a good fragrance objectively, it’s a shame that lovers of this scent will have to deal with its discontinuation.

  • I’ve wanted to try this since I saw it in a Facebook group at a ridiculous price of 90k ARS (approx. $65 USD). Honestly, I expected something different. It’s pleasant but doesn’t quite make me love it, nor does it earn a ‘like.’ It feels easy to wear, but definitely not for me. It’s quite potent and scratchy at first, almost making my nose and throat resonate; I’m not sure which note causes that. After 30 minutes, the glorious amber aquatic note emerges, the scratchiness fades, leaving a sophisticated bitterness. Projection and longevity are beastly, at least on my skin. That said, I wouldn’t repurchase Mar y Tierra for this flanker, especially not Atlántique. I feel the only one absolutely worth it is Aqva Marine, which is my favorite in this line.
