L'eau d'Issey by Issey Miyake is an aquatic floral fragrance for women. Launched in 1992, the nose behind this composition is Jacques Cavallier Belletrud. The top notes include lotus flower, melon, freesia, rose water, rose, calone, and cyclamen (Persian violet); the heart notes are formed by valley lily (lily of the valley), lily, water peony, and carnation; while the base notes reveal musk, neroli, exotic woods, osmanthus (fragrant olive), cedar, sandalwood, and amber.

At first I didn’t like it; I thought it was strong, but once I realized how long it lasts, I ended up loving it.

  • Eternal. A perfume that’s never out of place. Soft, fresh, and still current despite the years, super versatile. I smell it aquatic, from the same family as L’eau de Kenzo. Buy it blind and it’s very gift-worthy.

  • I think it deserves a ’90s Scents’ list. It smells like the 90s: fresh, youthful, elegant, and very feminine. Unique and with excellent longevity. I can smell it all day, and the dry-down is a treat.

  • Great surprise. The opening is strong, but the dry-down is marvelous. Its evolution stands out; the scent improves with time. Excellent longevity and sillage. Fresh, floral, and very versatile.

  • I tested it on my skin and barely noticed it: a green, swampy, mossy garden. The woods and carnation stand out. The other flowers are well-blended and you can’t distinguish them, but it smells fresh, like freshly cut flowers. I don’t see it as very feminine; it’s more unisex.

  • Fresh to feel clean. Perfect for right after a shower or for daily wear all year round. Its budget-friendly version in Spain is Mercadona’s ‘Ikiru’; it lasts less but smells the same and is much cheaper. A perfect backup perfume.

I had it when I was young and loved it. I liked it so much that I remember how I felt wearing it. I highly recommend it for younger women.

It’s the classic that’s always been around, very common, but it’s my fragrance. For me, L’eau d’Issey is balance, cleanliness, purity, peace, and tranquility. Even if I try others, none dethrone my silver bottle from the 90s. Nothing is more balanced. Sometimes fresh, then sweet, with lily and violet notes, suddenly ozonic… Perfect and well-rounded. My king since Christmas 1998. Lasts all day, and with the lotion, it’s a knockout. The trail is incredible, noticeable but not heavy. Soft, delicate, like walking through lilies on a breezy day.

  • At first I was doubtful, but now it’s my go-to. Delicate, nothing invasive, super feminine and wearable. Perfect for the day, a girls’ night out, or a night on the town. It doesn’t give me whiffies.

  • It smells like magnolia. It’s not sweet at all, which is why I don’t like it, but the aroma feels good; it smells clean and almost unisex. It’s for a serious woman, not sexy. It’s for summer; it feels fresh and floral. I was given a sample. I wouldn’t buy it because it’s not my style, but it is a good perfume.

  • I was looking for this toilette to use as an alternative to the perfume. In this case, the top notes are discretely fruity. They say it’s melon, but I think that reasonable impression comes from the aquatic touch of calone and its interplay with a less impactful opening balance than the perfume. If for me the Miyake perfume is like a valley of flowers at the foot of a mountain with beautiful cascades and serene lakes, this toilette is a generous garden with flowers beside a pond of water lilies and a stone fountain. That’s why it’s so hard for me to distinguish the composition. In Miyake, I surrender to its message and architecture. The aroma is long-lasting, but since it’s an elegant, feminine, and clean scent, it causes habituation quickly, and you stop noticing it after 4 hours. But it’s there. You perceive it in every positive comment… and it lasts more than 5 hours on skin.

  • It’s beautiful. It has the perfect balance between a floral blend and a certain sweetness. It conveys tranquility. It has excellent performance. It’s perfect.

  • A quintessential 90s perfume; in that sense, it reminds me of Calvin Klein’s Eternity. It brings back memories of a friend who used it in high school, and back then, it seemed a bit eccentric to us. It’s similar to the discontinued Ming Shu by Yves Rocher, which didn’t charm me, but I used it because it smelled fresh and put-together. Now, that last one felt much more youthful. I perceive a pond with water lilies, mossy water, and flowers—carnations and lilies of the valley behind the lotus flower that opens it up. It’s elegant, clean, and a classic that will always be appropriate. The dry-down is soft but substantial, lasting hours and hours.

  • I love this perfume. I describe it as ‘wellness in a bottle.’ So calming; I adore the aquatic lotus flower note. It’s a unique, clean, daily-wear scent that’s timeless and sublime. It evokes for me the early morning with that crisp outdoor air, by a beautiful pond surrounded by flowers and green woods—that feeling of morning peace, a zen state. It’s an aroma that moves me deeply, very spiritual, balancing pristine aquatic life with the delicate, fragrant flowers of a green sanctuary in nature.

  • This is one of those perfumes that on paper seems perfect for me, but in reality, it falls flat. I felt an imbalance in the opening between the melon and rose notes, and as it dries down, a peony note persists that ultimately creates an unpleasant experience. I like the scent of water and humidity in fragrances, but in this case, it feels like a symphony of scents that don’t come together for me; instead, I just dislike it. It’s a definite no.

  • This is a perfume that has always intrigued me. I tried it recently, but unfortunately, I couldn’t make myself like it… there’s a note I can’t quite identify that feels sharp and overpowers everything else. Another proof of how important it is to test them before ‘investing’ (my other disappointment was with Light Blue).

  • This is a true elixir of peace and harmony. A wonder for calming the mind. The first time I tried it, I was traveling to Australia. I was exhausted and had a layover in Los Angeles. I tested it at duty-free, and it completely calmed me for hours until I reached my destination… It’s aquatic, ozonic, and incredibly fresh. It reminds me of the scent of wet earth after rain. A pure oasis that transports you to a dreamlike place. I haven’t found anything else like it in terms of aroma. It’s inimitable. Most men don’t like it; it’s not sensual. It’s for personal use, just for you, ideal for summer, very zen, with an unmatched Japanese touch.

I HATE roses, I hate them, and yet I LOVE THIS PERFUME. It smells like a real rose!!!!!! With woody and olive notes that give a slight kick at the base. Simply perfect.

  • I’m obsessed with this perfume. My mom used to wear it in the 2000s, and it brings back great memories. It smells sophisticated—soft but not unnoticed. It’s not my usual style, but I absolutely love it, especially for special occasions.

  • Before I went crazy for perfumes, I used only one all year, and this was one I repeated many times. Fresh, with a meadow scent, elegant, and long-lasting. In the 90s, it was THE perfume you had to own. Unmatched, it will always be in my collection.

Spring is here, the time for light and floral fragrances. Since I couldn’t find anything new that appealed to me and didn’t feel like searching much, I decided to return to a 90s classic, so languid and ethereal. I loved them (and still do). And L’eau d’Issey was always like coming home—a light, crystal-clear, harmonious floral scent, nothing like today’s perfumery, which is so loud and excessive. But what a surprise; when I tested it in the store (thank God), I found a juice that is a distant echo of what it once was. L’eau d’Issey has been reduced to a tasteless, ghostly liquid. Almost nothing of its luminous, tranquil aura remains: the lotus personality is watered down, the peony is imperceptible… the rose does show up, and the melon, which I didn’t remember, adds a slightly synthetic sweetness. What a huge sadness; with the decline of these classics, memories and emotions also fade, leaving behind a bitter nostalgia.

I’ve been using this perfume for years since I was 17, and honestly, I always get compliments, even though it’s a classic, it always stands out. It smells clean, is pleasant when dry, and I feel it’s versatile because you can wear it for any occasion, whether going to the gym or to dinner. It’s cheerful and yet elegant!

  • I love it; it’s one of my favorites, and I always buy it before my current one runs out—it can’t be missing from my collection. Rich aroma, smells clean, fresh, and citrusy (even though it’s not mentioned), sweet, and floral, very versatile. It has a long trail; my scent arrives first and lingers long after I’m gone 👌🏼. Excellent longevity, and best of all, it’s not a common perfume. Highly recommended 😊

  • I remember when, as a teenager and looking for perfumes in my sister’s closet, I found this one (she had brought it from abroad, from her then-husband). That scent got etched into my brain: it smelled refined, clean, fresh… like an adult woman, but an adult woman with a spark. Like those 90s/00s ads showing futurism. I bought it with my first paycheck, and it hasn’t left my wardrobe since. Everyone recognizes me by that scent. My boyfriend gave me the last bottle, and now I use it for our summer dates because he smells it and recognizes it (something he’s not very good at!) 😅 It’s true it might not last a thousand hours or flood the room, but the person I want to feel it does, and they love it. Anyway, it’s a super-fine perfume, fruity, fresh, aquatic… smells like freshly cut sweet melon, woods, and rain dew in a garden. It’s a delight. Now at 30, I can say it’s my signature scent and it will be forever ❤️

  • I deleted my previous review because I wanted to talk about this masterpiece again. I’m already on my third EDP, which is rare for me. It’s my vacation scent: fresh, aquatic, and floral. An eternal gem, less dusty and woody than the EDT, much more floral and alive, with a bright, aquatic jasmine… Perfect for summer and spring, it has its own identity and lingers in the memory. It could be a great blind buy. It smells of elegance, cleanliness, and quiet nature.

I’m head over heels for it 😍 It’s like being by the Lagoon of the Lotus at Parque SAVAL in Valdivia 🌸🌺

  • A love that doesn’t age. I found it again after 20 years. In a world where fragrances scream, L’eau d’Issey sounds elegant. It’s a fascinating watery melon, balanced with soft flowers.

  • I keep coming back to it again and again. That aquatic note is addictive and never goes out of style. It suits any age and any season. It’s an eternal classic.

It makes me gag. Smells like rotting fruit, a sharp acid that squeezes your head and gives you a headache.

  • Very fresh and pleasant at first, but the dry-down felt too woody to me. Although it’s not sharp, there’s a certain note that gives me a headache, which was a letdown.

  • Stephanielaturca

It’s been my favorite perfume since I was 17; it can’t be missing from my collection—it’s on another level. I’ve used niche, designer, and Arabic fragrances, and this is the one that gets the most compliments. People love the clean, fresh, yet strong scent. There are many notes Guao Guao doesn’t clarify: it can be very fresh one moment and then quite concentrated and striking the next. It brings attitude and elegance; it’s irresistible. It feels delicious on me! I’m not sure if the aquatic and ozonic notes just don’t suit everyone. I recommend it a thousand times, just know how to apply it because sometimes it feels very fresh and other times very strong. It also depends on the weather; I wear it any day and at night because that’s when it feels the strongest.

  • I love it! It’s fresh, feminine, and ideal for any occasion. I mostly wear it on warm days. I think it’s very hard to dislike, so I recommend buying it blind. On my skin, it has great projection and longevity, which is something I struggle to find in other perfumes with these characteristics. People in Argentina often asked me if it was Caro Cuore, but I don’t feel they’re that similar due to this perfume’s characteristic freshness, which Caro Cuore lacks.

  • I bought it because it was on sale, and the set cost the same as the perfume alone at other stores. I expected it to be clean and soapy. It is clean, yes, but not soapy at all. The melon note doesn’t appeal to me because I find it invasive and it lingers throughout the dry-down. That said, I like it for being fresh; it’s perfect for hot summer days in my country. It transports me to a coastal city I visit on vacation. I don’t think I’ll buy it again; I prefer to keep searching for the perfect clean scent, and so far, I haven’t found it.

  • It would be perfect if the aquatic peony note weren’t so strong; I feel it’s present throughout the entire development and comes off as heavy and overwhelming, which is why I don’t find it as fresh as I hoped. Still, I acknowledge it’s a great perfume.

  • It’s not fresh; it’s quite intense and a bit overwhelming. It has a vintage vibe, smells great but like a perfume from over 20 years ago—nothing current. The green floral note is very prominent, and as it dries down, you get peony, rose, and an aquatic touch that reminds me of laundry detergent. Test it on your skin because every body develops it differently.

  • Floral, aquatic, and fresh, yet with weight. I love it! It’s an EDT with better performance than many EDPs. I really like it; it’s exotic, clean, and floral, which is rare these days. I’ll definitely repurchase.

  • I like it, even if it’s not my absolute favorite; it has its place in my collection. It’s ideal for heat and daytime wear, and I even see it as unisex. It smells airy and oxygenated, reminding me a lot of Perry Ellis 360º, probably due to the melon note that gives it that vibe. Both smell very similar to me, but this one is softer and more wearable.

  • Daniel Henderson 77

It’s exquisite, seductive, and addictive. Although it’s marketed as feminine, it’s such a rich scent that I’d wear it too. I can’t stop smelling myself. I showed it to my 18-year-old daughter, and she bought it because she loved it. I think, even though it’s been on the market for years, it performs just as well as its male version: people still love it, and it stays current. I highly recommend it, though as with everything, try it before buying.

  • It’s one of my favorite perfumes and lasts all day. I recommend it for cloudy or rainy days; my skin handles it well because it carries intense scents beautifully and smells incredible on me. However, if you’re sensitive to strong fragrances, you might want to skip it.
