Perfumer
Fanny Bal
Fanny Bal is a perfumer who currently works for International Flavors and Fragrances (IFF), the world leader in the fragrance industry. She was born in France and grew up with a love for perfume, which led her to pursue a career in the industry. Bal studied at the prestigious ISIPCA (Institut Supérieur International de la Parfumerie, de la Cosmétique et de l'Aromatique Alimentaire) in Versailles, France, where she honed her skills in fragrance composition.
After completing her studies, Bal began her career as a junior perfumer at IFF, where she worked on various projects for major fragrance brands. She quickly gained recognition for her talent and had the mentorship of the legendary perfumer Dominique Ropion, who helped her refine her craft.
In 2011, while still a student of a perfumery school, Fanny Bal sought the advice of Dominique Ropion, a master perfumer, regarding a perfume she was creating as part of her studies. Ropion offered her the opportunity to go smell raw materials every afternoon after her classes. What started as a brief interaction soon became an improvised training cycle. According to her biography, Ropion’s training with Bal led to the development of a new learning method for the fragrance company International Flavors and Fragrances.
“'We started from scratch, and I immediately understood that this work was a school of humility',” Bal recalled about her training with Ropion. She described the essential skills she learned from him, stating: “'I learned from him the rigor and precision to dose the ingredients one by one. The art of writing short formulas where each ingredient must be fully justified, which is precisely what gives a perfume its character.'”
Bal also explained how this encounter transformed the way she works, saying: “'Like him, I classify my materials—not alphabetically, but by family of ingredients, from the most volatile to the most persistent. That way, you have an immediate understanding of the formula'".
Bal’s major breakthrough came when she was invited to create fragrances for Frederic Malle, the niche fragrance brand known for its unique, high-quality scents. She continued to compose several fragrances for the brand, including the popular Eau de Magnolia and Promise. Her work for Frederic Malle established her as an emerging star in the industry and led to collaborations with other notable brands such as Masque Milano and Les Bains Guerbois.
In her work, Bal is known for her ability to blend unexpected ingredients and create complex, multi-layered fragrances. She draws inspiration from various sources, including art, nature, and personal experiences, and strives to create beautiful and meaningful scents.
Some of Bal’s most famous creations include Givenchy L'Interdit Eau de Parfum, Givenchy Irresistible Givenchy and Mugler Alien Fusion. She has also composed fragrances for well-known brands such as Calvin Klein, Chloé and Yves Saint Laurent.
Today, Bal continues to push the boundaries of fragrance composition and is considered one of the most talented perfumers of her generation. Her work has won numerous awards and distinctions, and she is highly respected within the perfumery industry for her innovation and creativity.
