Piero Piccioni, the genius of Italian film music, composed over 300 scores. Almost 10 months ago, driven by my love for music, I discovered his work. ‘Nights to Come’ would be the perfect soundtrack: a protagonist smoking on the balcony of a 14th-floor luxury apartment, Rome’s lights igniting against a violet autumn sunset, 1974 CinemaScope. An Interpol agent waits for the wife of a politician tied to the mafia in Italy and Switzerland. She ends up in bed after venting her thirst for revenge against her toxic husband and breaking out of her ‘golden cage.’ She lights another cigarette, meditates, and the music returns: ‘It’s Possible.’ That’s Vendetta Uomo, a beautiful tragedy, the darkest expression of Mediterranean concepts ever distilled into raw, amber leather with a strong citrus-floral accent. Theresa and Edmond Roudnitska threw their scoreboards out the window searching for this creation; he went bald, and she fell in love with a mechanic. Valentino steps in with his right foot, true to his Italian heritage: here there is no softness, only character and impact, a requirement for this select group of international police. The story closes with a tragic 1974 Rome: he lights a cigarette, his bottle-green Alfa Romeo picks up a beautiful woman in a mask and sunglasses, lifts the suitcase… End titles, with ‘No Return Point’ in the background. They look at each other and smile, knowing what’s coming. Projection and longevity are titanic with just 6 sprays. Is it a work of art? Does it even matter? I think I need to smoke another cigarette… Senza Via D’Uscita – Finale.

Valentino Vendetta Uomo is a beast to handle. It opens with animalic leather and oud, even though the decant doesn’t list oud. Sometimes the oud and leather blur together in their wildness. It’s a harsh, unrefined leather—unlike some Gucci scents that soften it—raw and fierce, like hides stored untreated in Fez tanneries. But it quickly takes on citrus notes: bergamot, basil, and lemon, creating a curious scent that tames the animal edge while adding freshness, making it more accessible without losing its power and ferocity. Minutes later, labdanum and benzoin resins blend with cedar, boosting the complexity. It’s impeccably constructed. Up close, it’s masculine and sharp, but from a distance, Valentina emerges: the unmistakable iris mixed with jasmine, cinnamon, amber, and tonka bean, evoking Guerlain. From afar, it becomes feminine, sweet, calming, and enveloping. As it dries, it mutates from leather to chypre, dominated by mountain resins. Shadowy notes of patchouli and moss awaken that typical forest green. It’s intense, meant for special occasions, masculine, nocturnal, and serious. For bold personalities who know what they want. The new head of the mafia. Smells and looks expensive, like that Andy Garcia in The Godfather III trying to be the toughest. Valentino with ‘Vendetta’ isn’t playing around. A luxury execution when designer scents still ruled. The previous three reviews were top-notch, and this is my contribution. It opens bright and loud with a sweet-and-sour bergamot, lavender, and orange blossom. Then it turns creamy with white florals and a glowing opoponax flower. Over time, darkness takes over: resinous, earthy (clove or cinnamon, I’m not sure), and a strong woody base with light vetiver. Moss and patchouli add sophistication. That opoponax flower is gorgeous. Even as it darkens, it never loses its citrus touch. It’s similar to Haston Z 14, but Vendetta is more refined. It’s a beauty: smoky wood, spicy, earthy. Could be a Gucci from the 00s or a modern Tom Ford. Maybe 1991 wasn’t the best year to launch; it got forgotten too quickly. Totally recommended.

A classic that, thanks to its balance, feels contemporary and timeless. Vendetta Uomo is green and earthy; it received little attention compared to its feminine counterpart. It evokes the history of Italian villages, passion, and one of those great ’90s years that no longer exist. If you like moss and green notes, you’ll appreciate it: lasting power and sillage are very satisfying. It doesn’t shout, but it makes itself heard. It’s austere, sharp, elegant, ideal for formal occasions and requires an appropriate look.
