  I tested the new version six times in the perfumery, with nothing else on. It is NOT the same as the Les Absolus d’Orient collection: they removed the fruity and sweet notes, boosted the oud (it smells like leather), jasmine, and rose; sometimes it smells like Ombre Nomade. In the dry-down, there’s a lot of ambroxan, the sandalwood is drier and more robust, and that jasmine or hedione note stays strong. I used the old one for parties or casual outings; I can’t do that with this one anymore. It’s become more formal and feminine, losing that mystical and super-sensual vibe.

  Guerlain’s Santal Royal is woody, floral, and spicy. Built on sandalwood, rose, incense, and smoky oud wood. It doesn’t change much, smelling the same at the start as it does at the end; the sandalwood is well-executed, drier than in other versions, but pleasant thanks to the smoky notes. It’s meant to be enjoyed, great for night outs or special events, though some might wear it daily. Best in autumn and winter. Lasted over 8 hours, with a good trail for the first hour and a half, then a close bubble. It’s unisex; I imagine both men and women wearing it. Give it a try and let us know your thoughts.

  It’s an olfactory show. I wore it all winter long. What a beast: you go crazy wearing it, it moves with you, accompanies you, and keeps you warm. Creamy sandalwood, a touch of incense, something dry, elegant woody rose, a bit dirty and accorded, with other flowers. It’s addictive, elegant, enigmatic, well-constructed, and unique. Perfect for cool or cloudy days, with that sun warming against the cold. A masterpiece, try it.
