Santal is an exquisite fragrance. If you’ve smelled Oud Rosewood, you’ll recognize the vibe. Just a heads-up: it’s not identical. The key difference is the animalic touch; with Oud Rosewood, that animalic edge fades after a few hours, leaving behind fruity, creamy, and more approachable notes. Santal Noir follows a similar path but includes a few notes that shift the balance slightly. If I had to describe it quickly, I’d say it’s an Oud Rosewood without the animalic side. Is it worth trying? Absolutely. Is it worth buying? In my opinion, yes. The only challenge is finding it, haha.

I’m lucky to own Oud Rosewood and Tobacolor from the same line, plus a sample of Santal Noir that was gifted to me. In my opinion, Santal Noir feels closer to Tobacolor than to Oud Rosewood, though it’s not identical to either. To me, Oud Rosewood smells more like Tuscan Leather, while Santal Noir resembles Tobacolor but with the huge difference of creamy sandalwood giving it a much richer texture. While Tobacolor is both sweet and spicy, Santal Noir is a sweet tobacco with leather notes, all wrapped in a creamy sandalwood. If you like perfumes like Tuscan Leather, Tobacco Vanille, ADP Santal, ADP Ambre, or Spice Bomb Extreme, buy it blind—you won’t be disappointed.

Dior Private Collection Santal Noir is a woody floral fragrance and, personally, my favorite from the collection. It opens with a sweet, warm rose with little depth, paired with a very creamy sandalwood and musk. As time passes, the rose’s intensity softens and the sandalwood takes center stage, revealing all its milky, creamy, dry, and subtly spicy nuances. At the same time, you can detect a warm, amber-like aroma. The blend of that soft rose with the sandalwood smells wonderful, but what makes this composition unique is the ambrette musk. It emits a clean, slightly dark scent, while the sandalwood adds a mysterious and elegant twist. Although it’s not overly complex due to its few notes, it still stands out from any commercial fragrance and surprises most people. On skin, it lasts about 10 hours with an intense projection for the first 6. If you spray it on clothes, the scent can linger even after two washes.
Dior Private Collection Santal Noir is my favorite from the range: a woody floral that opens with a sweet, warm, slightly flat rose, paired with a very creamy sandalwood and musk. Over time, the rose fades and the sandalwood takes over, revealing its milky, creamy, dry, and subtly spicy facets. At the same time, it smells warm, like amber. The blend of that soft rose with the sandalwood is excellent, but what makes it unique is the ambrette musk—clean and slightly dark—while the sandalwood adds a mysterious, elegant twist. Although it’s not overly complex due to its few notes, it smells different from any commercial fragrance and surprises almost everyone who tries it.
