Heure Bleue is a masterpiece with over a century of history, nothing like what you might expect… I don’t find it outdated; quite the opposite, right now it feels retro, and upon reflection, that retro is even modern. Perhaps a scent stays so secluded for years that when it resurfaces, it feels like a new arrival, something distinct, a color in that sometimes monochromatic world of perfume. If L’Heure Bleue comes into your hands, I recommend giving it a chance; the difference among so many options could be its best asset. Its flowers are tremendous yet never innocent or brash, serving as both its calling card and the background stage, especially in the Eau de Toilette. A wonderful clove that so far is my favorite in a fragrance; I usually struggle with this flower, finding it either too spicy or too folksy; here, it doesn’t have that tone because it’s guided by the iris, which nuances the entire composition into a relaxed, more elegant, and romantic floral. Multiple luxurious drops of anise give Heure a playful, artistic, and bold character. Tonka and vanilla provide a final body that rounds it out for multiple occasions, as it never feels flat. When its journey on your skin concludes, it teaches you what Guerlain truly is. For me, it’s far more beautiful than Esprit de Oscar R., which, between its citrusy launch and moderate longevity, takes an unexpected turn with a blade-like heliotrope and doesn’t offer the serene, full-footed presence that L’Heure Bleue provides, in both EDT and EDP. This fragrance is a great reformer of noses, putting back in place concepts that are rooted and somewhat forgotten in perfumery; its over 100 years have instilled patience amidst changes, offering a non-showy but very real journey to rediscover aesthetically forgotten fragrances that once trodden paths are now well-worn, teaching us to recognize the beauty of true perfumery nomadism. It evokes a peace and serenity proper to the blue hour, the time of day for reflection; when almost everything is done, but what perhaps wasn’t possible today might be tomorrow. It’s not about settling, but simply maturity, knowing how to be; this is how L’Heure Bleue says goodbye to the day, with dignity. A Guerlain beauty, highly recommended when you’re tired of the current, even of the new millennium; its equidistant archaeology in perfumery results in an experience that is anything but outdated, a retro with capital letters, a fragrance of beauty, of peace, a ingenuity we can use today, when? Whenever you want to Feel. Its characteristic powdery iris and violet, personally, do not cause a nostalgia that could be sad or understood as being out of date for another era; my nose, my psyche, and my soul understand it as a state of peace, serene, and it doesn’t even produce melancholy but rather a serene-peace of great perpetual blue, clean, without any negative vibes, waiting to rest for good dreams. The good thing about Heure is that to feel it, you don’t need to sleep and dream; it gives me that stability while awake. After all, don’t the best dreams happen when you wake up?

  • I’ve been looking for this perfume for years, smelled it in a decant, and it drove me crazy. It has a moss similar to Mitsouko but more subtle and sparkling, with a touch of warm anise. On paper, it’s perfect, but on my skin, it turns sour and spoiled; I don’t know if it’s my pH. The downside is that the floral base lasts until morning. I’d prefer it in textiles.

  • I’ve been trying to get my hands on this for years, smelled it in a decant, and it drove me crazy. It’s very similar to the moss in Mitsouko but in the background, sparkling, with warm anise. My joy turned to a pitfall: on skin, it turns sour, like it’s spoiled; I don’t know if it’s my pH. Interestingly, the floral base lasts until morning. I’d rather have it in textiles.
