Liu was born in the 1920s by the hand of Jacques Guerlain, housed in a black bottle with an Art Deco vibe. The official legend says it was created for Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy, but there’s another version claiming Jacques surprised his wife with this fragrance as a response to his rival, Chanel No. 5. Basically, Liu is the most austere version of that classic. What sets them apart is that signature ‘Guerlinade’ note found throughout the brand’s entire family. Comparing No. 5 to Liu is like comparing two twins: they’re the same but act differently. If No. 5 is Juliette—the wicked and passionate one—then Liu is Justine, the unfortunate one who hides those same traits under a cloak of virtue and purity. This Christmas, Guerlain brings Liu out of its trunk with a limited-edition makeup launch and the fragrance in body mist; the classic is back.
