  • Opens with a very realistic, spiced, slightly sweet leather. Then myrrh and incense start to show up but never overshadow the leather. It feels a bit animal for a while, but not unpleasant. In the final dry down, the leather loses some of the initial spice and settles into a more resinous scent. I get the comparisons to Knize Ten, but they only match at the start; later they differ quite a bit in the dry down. I’d define Knize Ten as a leather-floral, while Cuir Mauresque feels more like a leather-balsamic. Its longevity and projection are good, I’d say above average for Lutens. To me, it comes across as more masculine than feminine, even though it’s classified as unisex. Definitely something I see for cold weather. Highly recommended if it weren’t for the steep price.

  • It opens with a realistic, spiced, slightly sweet leather. Then myrrh and incense emerge without overpowering the leather. It has an animal vibe, but nothing gross. In the dry down, the spices fade and it becomes more resinous. It reminds me of Knize Ten at first, but then they diverge a lot; this one is balsamic, the other floral. Longevity and projection are good, better than the average Lutens. I see it as more masculine than feminine, perfect for cold weather. Highly recommended if the price weren’t so high.

  • I’ve been hunting for Cuir Mauresque by Serge Lutens for years, but in Miami I ended up with the limited edition Thierry Mugler Pure Leather. They say the leather comes from barrels with cured scraps, and if you like something with character and want to stand out from the crowd, it’s a formidable choice.
