They say L’aimant was Coty’s response to Chanel No. 5, and even that they stole Coty’s formula to make the Chanel. I don’t know how much is true, but they smell very similar. It smells like talc, very powdery, probably due to the aldehydes. Behind that, a somewhat shy rose, accompanied by a mischievous bergamot, and finally sandalwood. I think it’s for adults, around 40 and up, and for use on cold days.
Magnificent fragrance. Sometimes I’m surprised that new perfumes generate so much debate. Here is L’aimant by Coty, a pioneering and giant house from the past. I won’t recount its history, but it’s a GREAT perfume, even though other sites don’t recommend the current version. It opens aldehydic, very similar to Chanel No. 5, with notes of peach and citrus. Then that sharp opening gives way to warm, round, powdery flowers. A rich carnation, everything very elegant without being loud, with a base of sandalwood and musk that reminds me of Shalimar, but softer. If No. 5 is still relevant, this Coty deserves it more, but current production seems to have forgotten its essence. If you find a vintage from the 50s, it’s worth it.
This fragrance surprised me so much. Even though I’m a fan of these scents, I was afraid it might be too vintage, and its low price made me hesitate. But I decided to buy it and I have no regrets. I wear it at the office and it smells delicate, elegant, and comforting. It’s the perfect option when you don’t know what to wear. I also think it’s a great alternative to Arpege.
I can only speak to the current version of L’aimant. I don’t know anything about the vintage, but this new one smells elegant and feminine. It’s classic, but not old-fashioned. The opening is very similar to Chanel No. 5, and the dry down shares that DNA too, though here it’s more cheerful and youthful, without that prominent rose note until it reminds me of Arpege. If you have to define something between No. 5 and Lanvin’s Arpege, this is the Coty L’aimant. It’s an Eau de Toilette, but it lasts well and I still smell it on my clothes the next day.
