Controversial: you either hate it or love it, no middle ground. Starts animal and smoky, between leather and an oud I highly doubt is actually there, until it lightens and turns soapy like old chypres. It mixes dirty animal scents with clean soap and works great. It’s like washing your pet, a Vietnamese pig with expensive, refined French soap. The trail is noticeable from several meters away but doesn’t weigh it down; the farther you get, the more soapy-floral it becomes, while up close it smells of smoky leather and animal. It’s as if distance blurs and “cleans” it, a beautiful and curious effect that anyone who smells it will notice. Some say it smells like a hamburger with pickles, and I get it, it did seem like that to me at times. Works well in summer, not a beast but it holds up, light in the Guerlain style. Elegant and refined, but not for everyone. Even though it’s called oud, don’t expect miracles.
Reminds me of the smell of a McDonald’s hamburger.
Total disappointment. I expected something more niche and potent, but that’s on me for being a Guerlain. It doesn’t smell like natural oud, but rather a synthetic blend of leather and oud that reminds me terribly of Dior’s Leather Oud (which I hate for being artificial and indistinct). Add to that rose aldehydes, making it more feminine than I thought. Imagine a Leather Oud with aldehydes; that’s roughly how it smells. Nothing like the original.
I’m using analogies because it’s a very peculiar scent. The opening is a punch of prominent oud, something fecal but bearable and even addictive, in the style of Xerjoff’s Al Khatt. Ten minutes in, the party begins: rough, smoking, incandescent leather. It’s a leather style like Falcon Leather with smoky notes and a sweet background, probably praline, but nothing gourmand, just a light touch. It’s been a great discovery; I already bought the bottle. Lasting power is very good. One of the best from Guerlain, perhaps my favorite from the entire line. Try it before buying, it’s complex. 9.5/10.
