Wild Aoud by Montale

One of those ‘ugly ducklings’ in the oud world: undeniable quality that perhaps doesn’t receive the attention it deserves. It starts unexpectedly with an almost medicinal note that reminds me of when my daughters used tea tree oil for lice, as if Montale wanted to ward off those seeking the conventional. Wild Aoud is exactly that: wild and untamed, not seeking mass approval. The drydown is long; after a few hours, when the tea tree fades, it turns into a beautiful woody accord with cedar, amber nuances, and something earthy. There’s a side that reminds me of Wood on Fire by Montale: that raw, bare, slightly burnt wood, with a sweet finish; they share the same DNA, almost sisters. Performance is medium, as expected from Montale, ensuring its character accompanies you for hours. It leans masculine, dense and warm, perfect for cold climates, fall, and winter. It’s not an oud for everyone or for those seeking softness; it’s for those who value the authentic and the raw. I, not used to such potency, sometimes feel it lacks something to balance it. In fact, I’ve mixed it with a grapefruit (Sunrise Paradise by Adopt) and the result is surprising: the grapefruit adds a citrus spark and brightness that counteracts the density, transforming it into a captivating citrus-woody blend. It’s a duo that highlights the best of both, taming the untamed nature of the oud with vibrant freshness. This way, I’ve managed to get close to the beast without it devouring me, feeling its presence in a different way.

Incredible yet true: this Montale had not a single review and it’s no surprise. I checked blogs and forums and almost no one mentions it, and honestly, you lose nothing by ignoring it. It’s not a fragrance an amateur or an expert should feel obligated to wear. The issue is its ambiguity. Wild Aoud smells like generic, rugged wood (very masculine) without conveying anything, as if it were unfinished. It smells good but doesn’t transcend; it lacks a unique aroma or a standout evolution, and the oud feels very diffuse. More than ‘Wild’, it’s ‘Flat’. What I feel most is sage, patchouli, and tobacco. In conclusion, it left me quite indifferent. And to be very frank, the only one from this house worth it is Black Aoud, a niche and oud icon. The others I find vulgar. Longevity is scarce for a house where fixation should be notable. It’s my opinion, but it doesn’t take away interest for those who want to try it.

Very Montale: it doesn’t leave you indifferent. Fresh notes prevail over the underlying woody tones. When you wear it, it reminds you of gas station aromas… rich, though the name isn’t appropriate. And I get the impression it’s already discontinued.
