Hugo Red by Hugo Boss is a spicy oriental fragrance for men. Launched in 2013, this composition features metallic, grapefruit, pink pepper, and galbanum in the top notes. The heart reveals a bouquet of rhubarb, metallic notes, pineapple, and cedar, while the base settles on amber and tonka bean.

  • After so many good comments, it deserved to be tried at the perfumery. Result: bought immediately. Let’s start with the fact that its opening is a delight; I feel strong pineapple and pink pepper, and slightly further back and a bit lighter I perceive the grapefruit. It stays somewhat softer in its intermediate phase, keeping the pineapple and pepper at all times, until the final phase when it’s already right on the skin. Excellent sillage (rare for Hugo Boss) and good trail (rare for Hugo Boss… again). Smelling it, my other senses automatically associate it with the color red. Incredible, a very masculine fragrance and I just checked that it has broad feminine appeal. I’m a bit surprised by the pineapple, since as a fruit I love eating it, but in perfumes I usually shy away from it, associating it with more regal fragrances; in this case, it gave a different turn, imparting a contemporary, wide-ranging ethereal touch to Hugo Red. Thanks to the Fragrantica reviewers, the fragrance was everything they said about it, a delight from start to finish.

I disagree with the other reviews: at first, the opening was delicious, sparkling, and unique, between citrus and fruity. After 15 minutes it turned sweeter and was good for about half an hour. Then, I don’t know if the metallic notes took more prominence or what happened, but it became a bitter, sour, shrill, and synthetic scent. I don’t want to say the perfume is bad, just that I didn’t like it.

  • DIVINAAAA! HIGHLY RECOMMENDABLE! It’s a creation, honestly. I feel wonderful, maybe magnetically. The sillage and longevity are more than good. I like this!

Out of my 60+ perfumes, this is the only one that stays perfectly and lasts all day. I clearly distinguish its three stages and it develops wonderfully on my skin, something that doesn’t happen with the others. Although I can’t define the notes 100%, I’m sure the pink pepper stays from start to finish. For my limited experience, it’s my favorite and hard to beat, though I’ll keep looking. It can be worn all day, just need to be careful not to overapply.

Despite all the good comments, I decided to try it at the perfumery. Result: I bought it on the spot. The opening is a delight; I feel strong pineapple and pink pepper, with a touch of grapefruit more in the back and soft. In the intermediate phase it softens a bit, but keeps the pineapple and pepper until the end when it’s right on the skin. It has excellent sillage (something rare for Hugo Boss) and a good trail (another rarity for the brand). Smelling it, my other senses automatically associate it with the color red. It’s incredible, very masculine, but I just checked that it has broad feminine appeal. I’m a bit surprised by the pineapple, since as a fruit I love eating it, but in perfumes I usually shy away from it, associating it with more regal fragrances; here it gave a different turn, imparting a contemporary, wide-ranging ethereal touch to Hugo Red. Thanks to the Fragrantica reviewers, the fragrance was everything they said, a delight from start to finish.

I noticed a huge difference between the English and Spanish comments on Fragrantica. When I tried it, I didn’t like it; it’s very generic. I like citrus, but as soon as I put it on, the first thing I did was go to the bathroom to take it off. I thought I’d love it based on the reviews, but I didn’t.

The truth is, it’s a rich perfume, very youthful and gives an adventurous look. I fell in love with everything; it’s very pleasant for women; several women asked me what perfume I was wearing and said it smelled rich. Incredible.

  • Pineapple, rhubarb, and lemon explode on the opening, with a metallic base, pepper, and tonka bean. It’s a cold-warm blend that won’t appeal to everyone, but it has become my favorite. The opening is incredible and lasts over 12 hours; initially the trail is heavy, then moderate, and finally it sticks to the skin. It’s not just for winter; due to its sweetness and potency, I wear it on warm nights in an informal setting. In Mexico, it costs about $85 for 150 ml, which I think is pricey. EDIT: 24 hours later, I can still smell the pineapple and lemon right on my skin; I think it’s the most long-lasting Hugo Boss fragrance. EDIT 2: I bought it in tester version, maybe that explains its extreme longevity on me compared to other users.

Didn’t convince me. It’s citrusy as I like, but it smells too much like other things. I didn’t feel those note transitions others mention. I’ll try it again, but my first impression was that I wouldn’t buy it.

  • Pablo@zulxSiempre

I love it. It smells like Blue Seduction by Antonio Banderas but with a much more metallic touch and it lasts way longer.

  • Good citrus opening, very pleasant and easy to wear. The dry-down reveals the metallic notes that I don’t like anymore. I haven’t found it sweet, but rather generic. To be a Boss, it’s well put together and can yield good results. In my opinion, it’s targeted at a young audience in their early twenties and doesn’t fit the maturity of someone over thirty. Young people will surely love it.

  • WifredoSilva78

The best of Hugo. Very crisp fruit notes combined with the elegance of the original Boss. I love it, and the girls do too.

  • The opening is interesting and promises more than it delivers. After pleasant citrus notes, the rhubarb appears, which I don’t like, followed by that unpleasant metallic thing. The base carries tonka bean (what a novelty) and adds sweetness. The result smells very plastic, reminiscent of some Axe-style deodorant, and yes, it’s generic. I see it as exclusive for young people, and even the bottle looks ugly to me. P.S.: I forgot to mention I didn’t detect the pineapple, and the previous advice seems spot on.

Don’t buy without testing. Warning: don’t test more than two scents in a row without waiting time, or your nasal sensors get confused. Just a humble tip from over 30 years of searching in stores that no longer exist. What a pity that today there are so few professionals with a good sense of smell who understand the customer, especially the demanding ones looking for something intense, long-lasting, and unconventional. I hope you take your time to buy well and don’t waste money on fine fragrances if you don’t know what you want.

  • Rhubarb! Thanks to this, I got to know that note that intrigued me, and I love it; it will be one of my favorites. The fragrance is spicy, vibrant, energetic, and red in every sense. It’s like the gaze of a seductive man, like Jared Leto in the ad: a fixed stare. I recommend it for active, extroverted, confident men who feel beyond formality. I only regret not buying a larger bottle.

  • Arcturus

Tested it with a sample vial. Doesn’t excite me much; it’s not the best of Hugo Boss. The rhubarb is clearly noticeable.

  • gaston_AR

The opening is good and promising: pink pepper, grapefruit, pineapple, and a sophisticated metallic touch. Then it fades quickly; after 15 minutes, almost nothing. I’m surprised it doesn’t measure up to other Hugo Boss scents, but it’s acceptable for daytime or sports because it’s fresh and gives an energy boost.

  • Smelled good on the blotter, but once applied to my arm… HORRIBLE, HORRIBLE. It smells strongly of latex, like a condom, very perfumed. Fatal.

  • Terrible. I bought it with high expectations, but upon applying it, I could barely even smell it myself. That faint scent lasted less than 30 minutes and people noticed nothing. VERY BAD.

  • Tested it yesterday and definitely not for me. The metallic opening is hard to digest. The dry-down reminds me a lot of the Hugo Boss Bottled Night I was gifted and couldn’t stand; this Red Men brings back those same memories. In fact, except for Energisse, I haven’t tried another from this brand that I liked.

Hugo Boss Red is a cheerful, fruity, and sweet fragrance. I agree with my colleagues: the opening is the most beautiful and standout part, with that combination of metallic and fruity notes (especially the pineapple) and rhubarb (a note I smelled for the first time in a feminine fragrance called La Panthere de Cartier) giving it a very cheerful and festive dynamism. The letdown comes with the dry-down, as it’s very similar to other fragrances from the same Hugo Boss house, and the opening notes disappear after two hours. It’s true that it has a youthful and carefree style, and if the opening notes lasted longer, it would be a ‘notable’ fragrance. On me, it lasted over 10 hours with average projection for the first two hours. My advice: try it, don’t buy it blindly. Plus, since it’s relatively new, you can find it almost anywhere in perfumeries or department stores, which you can’t do with discontinued fragrances.

  • robertpires27

It’s a good cologne; I’d give it an 8 out of 10. It’s masculine, elegant, and has a fresh vibe.

  • rorro2828

I smelled this perfume a while ago, probably when it first launched, when they sprayed it on a tissue at a store. I didn’t pay much attention, but two hours later I smelled it again and thought it smelled good, but that was it. A year ago I bought Lacoste Yellow and liked the opening, although it doesn’t last long; I find it similar to this Lacoste with Hugo Red. Recently, they sprayed it on my arm at a store, so I gave it a second chance. I really liked the opening, went to work, and after two hours (mind you, it’s extremely hot where I live), I could still detect the grapefruit and rose notes, though with less intensity—very nice, very fresh. However, after about five hours, it becomes totally generic, and the refreshing opening is gone. I recommend you try it on your skin and give it time to see how it develops on each person; I like it a lot, and although it’s not my favorite, it smells great.

  • Hugo Red… A masculine and jovial rhubarb whose power I really appreciate. The kind of power I wished for so much in Eau de Rhubarbe Écarlate by Hermès, but unfortunately, that wasn’t the case… and Hugo Red has power and charisma! It’s cheerful and bold, stealing glances and generating positive chatter. It’s proud and youthful in spirit; for the first two hours, it radiates a beautiful fruity energy sustained by its metallic notes infused with pink pepper. After six hours, it takes a break, softening the sweetness and rhubarb, which disappear by the eighth hour to settle into a dry woody note whose resin has done all the work; together, these final notes fade into a soft skin musk. In short, a long-lasting fragrance with very effective effects on mild days. Hugo Red has really won me over, as it amplifies what can be achieved with a transparent and positive attitude. On top of that, its quality-to-price ratio is simply unbeatable. 9.7.

  • It didn’t last for me at all. I’ve heard many good things about this perfume, which is why it’s worth trying.

  • A youthful, fresh, and slightly sweet perfume, perfect for daily use. It’s not heavy or annoying to others. It’s a pleasant scent, but unfortunately, it doesn’t last at all. The longevity is terrible, though it improves a bit if you apply it generously or keep your Hugo Boss Red bottle at the office for touch-ups at mid-morning, noon, and after lunch.

  • GiancarloVÑ

Wow, what a fragrance! The first thing that stands out is its longevity on the skin, which is very good and makes it highly recommendable. It has an excellent blend of scents; while it’s not the best I’ve tried, it’s very well-structured and balanced. It starts with citrus (grapefruit) and metallic notes, then the heart becomes fruity and woody (probably pineapple), and finally leaves a pleasant trail of tonka vanilla with amber nuances. Highly recommended for high-energy days with a clear mind.

  • VOLCAN VILLARRICA

What a great scent—sweet but without losing its masculine edge. It’s modern, versatile, and I absolutely love it.

  • Fantastic and exquisite fragrance for everyday wear. I’d definitely buy it again; what a shame it’s no longer available in my city. It smells fresh and lasts forever. Totally recommended.

  • Shockingly metallic opening, a hard slap. After a few minutes, the pink pepper, pineapple, and rhubarb take shape, turning it into a rich, sweet fragrance for the day. I don’t feel it’s suitable for night due to a lack of elegance. After 3 hours, it becomes resinous and spicy. It has good projection and stays right on the skin for 6 hours.

  • Horrible… it smells like an oxidized iron bar with a little fruity fragrance on top. I got it as a gift and that’s where it stayed, for all eternity.

  • To the point: it’s friendly, optimistic, and a bit sweet. It performs very well and looks great on young, lively guys who are ready to conquer the world. It generates optimism. On my skin, the cool and metallic touches with aromatic rhubarb and sweetness stand out. It’s not gourmand, not citrusy, not original, but it gives vitality. I liked it, it’s just a shame it’s hard to find anymore. Recommended.

  • Ideal for winter rain; the metallic notes and pineapple dominate. It reminds me of Christmas dinners, smelling like pine nuts or roasted pineapples from the pines. It’s pleasant but strong, nothing more. Great longevity, though it feels conservative. Rating: 7.8/10.

  • Memoquique

Normally I hate Hugo Boss fragrances for being generic, but this is the exception. It’s a shame that over the years its projection and longevity fade, but it remains good.

  • In my opinion, I hate pink pepper, but here it turned out spectacular thanks to the blend of ingredients. I love it and will buy it again. Scent rating: 9-10.

  • I’ve been wearing it since it launched and it’s a must-have in my collection. It smells sweet and fruity, like it’s edible, blending pineapple and grapefruit with a metallic touch; the tonka bean is barely noticeable once it dries down. 10/10.

  • Don’t cry if you miss this fragrance; there’s another brand that imitates it 99% (almost identical). It’s Alfa Romeo Red.

  • metroidsoldier

Hugo Red is the reddest of the Hugo Boss house: a citrus, metallic, and aromatic scent that doesn’t feature apple, but rather rhubarb and pink pepper.
