Descripción

Genius by Renier Perfumes is an oriental woody fragrance for men and women. Launched in 2021, this composition is signed by perfumer Christian Carbonnel. Its top notes of Ceylon cinnamon, ginger, amber, bergamot, and neroli give way to a heart where tobacco, tonka bean, Siam benzoin, ylang-ylang, coriander, and iris create an enveloping atmosphere. The trail settles on a base of Madagascar vanilla, musk, labdanum, and patchouli.

  • I bought the Renier Discovery Set (Taino + Turquía). This is the fourth fragrance I’ve tried, and this one is my favorite so far, so I’m taking the plunge to share my thoughts. Genius starts off sparkling with ginger and a pure, aromatic cinnamon. Within seconds, it unfolds into a red carpet where exquisite tobacco and crunchy vanilla-tonka bean take the lead, while coriander and ylang-ylang trail behind with less presence. At some point, the entire blend reminds me of those maraschino cherries on cakes that nobody actually eats—lightly boozy. These are the notes I can pinpoint; the others are still a challenge. Everything is wrapped in a halo of sweet, tender cinnamon. After three hours, the fragrance feels creamier as the cinnamon and tobacco dial down to harmonize with the vanilla. With my less-experienced nose, Genius inevitably reminds me of The Merchant of Venice’s Arabesque: a sweet tobacco with plum and cinnamon, but with less sillage, shorter longevity, and a more unisex vibe. Genius feels like the older sister Arabesque looks up to, aspiring to be like her one day. Excellent for cold weather, totally unisex if you don’t mind the floral heart, and it has amazing projection. Just added it to my wishlist.

  • Still testing out Renier; it’s a quality house, but this one just isn’t for me. On paper, the notes work—amber, tonka bean, ginger, and ylang-ylang fit right in. But that sugary opening kills it for me, and that sweet, vanilla-tinged amber is a hard no. It reminds me of Grand Soir, which I absolutely hate. It’s not for me from start to finish. I get that others love it—it’s long-lasting, warm, and powerful—but it just doesn’t work for me.

  • I’ll keep testing Renier; it’s a quality house, but this one just isn’t for me. The accord works for me—amber, tonka bean, ginger, and ylang-ylang are all there. But the opening is too sugary, which I hate directly, and that sweet, vanilla-tinged amber doesn’t suit me at all. It reminds me of the amber in Grand Soir, which I absolutely despise. It’s not for me, from start to finish. I understand why others love it—it’s long-lasting, warm, and powerful—but it just doesn’t work for me.
