Descripción
Black XS Los Angeles for Him by Rabanne is a woody oriental fragrance for men. Launched in 2016, the nose behind this composition is Olivier Cresp. The top notes unfold with orange, neroli, and lemon (sour lime); the heart reveals cinnamon, apple, pineapple, and valley lily (spikenard); while the base notes settle on a register of woods, coumarin, vanilla, and oakmoss.

I stopped by the perfumery this morning and decided to smell it. The opening was very citrusy and summery, with orange and lemon, though a bit bitter. Over time, apple and pineapple appeared, giving it a juicy and cloying touch. At five hours, the woody notes and oak dominate, which was excessive; you have to try hard to feel the sweetness of the vanilla and coumarin. A downside: it would have been great if it felt sweeter from the vanilla and not so dry from the wood. I made a mistake buying it, and now I’ll have to return it.
This perfume lasts a long time on the skin and feels similar to Black XS L’Excess, just a bit more intense. I kept the other one because this one is more youthful and tropical.
Is this the Summer version? It has its charm, it’s wearable and fresh. The base notes are wood. What stands out most is the opening: an explosion of fruity and citrus notes, quite delicious. Then it becomes too generic to me. I’d prefer the original version a thousand times over.
It’s a refined version of XS Black, softer, fruitier, and perhaps less sweet as it dries down. It has its DNA, but it’s subtle; it’s not as extremely masculine or nocturnal, but much more refined. You can smell fruits, flowers, and that slightly herbal touch of sage. The heart is the clearest part: fruits and cinnamon. The dry down brings oakmoss and warm spices. It’s interesting and minimalist, and I don’t think anyone will remember it much after some time (it’s a limited edition). I was gifted it and I enjoy it.
To sum up, it starts like Black XS but fresher, removing that original’s heavy sweetness. After an hour, it turns into a fresher version of L’Excess, even more youthful (though L’Excess already is). It’s the right formula for intermediate days, not extreme heat, because it still keeps that characteristic Black heaviness.
Nothing to do with L’Excess. This one is much flatter and simpler. It lacks the sparkling, fruity opening. It only has the typical dry trace of the Black XS line. I think it’s a very poor fragrance: I can’t find any fruit, no development, and no projection. The scent is almost feminine, very powdery and dusty. It doesn’t evolve and lasts just enough.

It works well for me. It’s the most detached scent in the entire Black XS line, kind of like a spring or summer version, but don’t let that fool you; it still has some weight to its structure. It’s a linear fragrance with very personal and curious traits, like that potent semi-sweet marine accord I notice from start to finish.
