Gentleman Original 2024 by Givenchy is an aromatic woody fragrance for men. This creation, signed by perfumer Olivier Polge, launched in 2024 and marks the return of the iconic Gentleman line with a contemporary reinterpretation. The olfactory pyramid unfolds with a vibrant top note of cinnamon and tarragon, leading into a spicy, earthy heart featuring patchouli and vetiver. The trail settles on a warm, sophisticated base of Russian leather, evoking the brand's timeless elegance.

  • I clarify that I didn’t test it to avoid being judged; I just wanted to share my excitement seeing that Givenchy seems to be paying homage to the authentic 1974 GG, my first and best scent. Will it be good? Will it reach the mark? I’m already fascinated by its minimalist bottle. Blindly, it seems like a simplified version of that classic, keeping the basic notes of the legendary Gent. Ugh, I’m dying to try it and hope it becomes a modern alternative to the discontinued classic.

The original Gentleman is basically patchouli and soap. It has a complex opening where everything mixes quickly in the style of classic chypres until it forms a soapy accord, crowned by a chocolatey patchouli, settled on a pristine throne of Russian leather, and wrapped in earthy, green, and woody tones from the vetiver. It’s complex, with multiple nuances that polish the blend even if they aren’t listed. Its performance on my skin is very variable; maybe it’s olfactory fatigue, but after its overwhelming opening, it settles and projects discreetly and elegantly for 4-6 hours; sometimes I can smell it on my skin until the next day, and other times it disappears quickly. In any case, the performance is normal by today’s standards, meaning not much; more longevity is sorely missed. It’s undoubtedly a mature scent that has managed to keep the old-school spirit adapted to new times: nothing animalic, it needs to be worn formally or semi-formally, not with jeans and t-shirts; it suits well-groomed looks and crisp, ironed shirts. I really liked it and will definitely repurchase; it’s a great patchouli perfume I bought for a steal, but if you’ve had the old version, you’ll be disappointed: it’s softer, more domesticated, less animalic, and has worse performance, but it’s still very good.

  • It can be misleading, but the reality is that the original 1974 version is no longer sold. I assume it’s for its 50th anniversary that in 2024, Olivier Cresp and Nathalie Lorson launched a recreation based on Paul Leger’s work. I know because the box says ‘EDT Originale’. This is the one I have ready for my brother’s birthday, and I’m keeping a bottle for myself. I love it; I see it as the perfect signature scent. It respects the original formula to the maximum, but here there’s more freshness and versatility without losing elegance or that power to transport you back to the 70s, an era when life felt better. It’s not the ‘beast mode’ of before, but that’s just how times change. Would I recommend it after testing? Absolutely. The notes of patchouli and vetiver with cinnamon are reaffirmed, a potent tarragon opening, and an excellent Russian leather. P.S.: I clarify that I was never a regular user of the original Gentleman 1974 because I was a teenager back then. I only had the EDT Intense then, and my favorite from the Maison was INSENSE at the time.
