The sample arrived and opened my eyes: until today I didn’t know who Byredo was. The cumin gives you that dirty but fragrant vibe, like a gym hoodie with an expensive animalic touch (like in Kouros). Imagine mixing that hoodie, a bit of fine used tobacco, and a mix of oranges and Christmas pine… Comparing the price to what it offers, I prefer to spend on niche like Tom Ford.

The day I tried it marked me along with others from the Swedish house; for me, this is the best. I bought the decant and couldn’t stop rubbing my nose. It opens citrus with the mandarin, effervescent with the cilantro and cumin. The tobacco, leather, and labdanum give it body, contrasts that make it a beast. The incense adds the smoky and sweet touch, while the sandalwood and oud wrap it all up subtly and elegantly. It’s an extract with good longevity and trail, ideal for cold and night. Warning: it stains clothes due to the juice. If you like tobacco, don’t hesitate, it’s worth it, a ten.

What a cool aroma! Very similar to Serge Lutens’ Chergui but with a citrus twist 🍊 and more density, exactly what I was looking for in Chergui, Tobacco Mandarin has it. Good trail and longevity. But that price… 🙁 Maybe 200 dollars for those 50 ml, no more. But it’s the best tobacco scent I’ve ever smelled, refined, classy, and eccentric.

The day I tried it marked me, along with several others from the Swedish house; without a doubt, this is the best from the brand for me. I bought the decant and couldn’t stop sniffing my nose. Citrus opening from the mandarin, something effervescent thanks to the cilantro and cumin. The tobacco, leather, and labdanum give it the body it needs, with very own contrasts that make it a beast. The frankincense gives it that smoky and sweet touch, while the sandalwood and oud wrap everything up subtly and elegantly. It’s an extract with very good longevity and trail, works better in cold weather and at night, be careful and don’t apply it on clothes because just seeing the color of the juice you can tell it stains. If you can, try it; if you like tobacco scents, don’t hesitate, I highly recommend it. I understand the cost might put you off, but it’s very worth it, a ten!

  • Very difficult for me. It hits me with lots of cumin and cilantro, which reminds me of Moroccan skewers, and if that wasn’t enough, the oud. More leather, more tobacco… In short, it makes me want to shower again when I put it on. Not for me.

  • A masterful fragrance from start to finish, every note is barbarically luxurious and enchanting. Heavy and smoky, with that barely perceptible but dense mandarin citrus opening, which gives it absolute elegance. The cumin and cilantro accompany that symphony. As it dries down, the incense, tobacco, and oud give great presence and distinction; the set balances everything. From my point of view, it’s the most masculine, for cold and autumn. If you like tobacco, oud, and incense, Tobacco Mandarin is insane. Long-lasting, more than 12 hours, persistent on clothes, and with beast-level projection. The price is high, but it’s compensated by the exquisite fragrance.

  • Caught me off guard: the orange freshness clashes with the strength of tobacco, and that cumin boosts it without being dirty. The rest of the notes add body like an orchestra, resulting in a potent juice that wakes you up. A brutal fragrance.

  • A masterpiece from start to finish; every note is luxurious and enchanting. Heavy and smoky, of course, that barely visible but dense citrus mandarin note gives it total elegance, accompanied by cumin and cilantro. As it dries down, the incense, tobacco, and oud give it a lot of presence and distinction; everything is balanced. To me, it’s the most masculine, ideal for cold weather and autumn. If you like tobacco, oud, and incense, Tobacco Mandarin is insane. It lasts forever, 12 hours, sticks to clothes, and the projection is beast-level, invasive. The price is high, but it’s worth it for how exquisite it smells.

At first sniff, many wonderful things happen, especially that cumin and mandarin combined, with an elegance typical of the most formal men in the world. It’s a spicy, sexy, mature, formal, upper-class juice, a wonderful fragrance. • Tobacco Mandarin is controversial for those who don’t know cumin, as it’s a scent with many variants; in some, it emulates sweat or even sexual notes. Important warning: before the mandarin and tobacco, I detect a predominant combination of spices, cumin, coriander, some oregano, and cloves. After 5 minutes, it heads toward tobacco, sour and dry, with a smell similar to smoke left on fingers, and the delicious note is a well-worked mandarin reflecting its sour sweetness. I’ve never tried this tobacco-citrus nuance; I think it’s very balanced. As the alcohols evaporate, ingredients emerge that add variety: resins, woody oud touches that act as a shadow behind the mandarin and dry tobacco. Beyond this, it remains linear after two hours with enormous longevity. In final phases, it still smells like tobacco, with the mandarin’s bitterness on one side and the spotlight on the ambered oud traces. It’s for formal use, not necessarily for glamorous nights. Usable in cold and humid months; in high temperatures, it can be overwhelming. Completely unisex, but statistically more worn by men; I, being a woman, wore it in cold months and I think the scale leans that way. It has great longevity, sillage, and projection due to its concentration, extremely long-lasting and still detectable on washed clothes. The price is high; you have to consider if you’re passionate about this profile. It seems to me a solid Byredo perfume and understandable that it’s the most known; undoubtedly, a great tobacco with propositional nuances.

  • If you’re looking for Tobacco Mandarin specifically for the tobacco and mandarin notes, you’ll be disappointed. It smells like tobacco, yes, but a harsh kind that almost brings to mind smoke or ash. The mandarin is there too, but it’s not that fresh citrus note; it’s a sweet, almost overripe mandarin. All of this reminds me of a low-alcohol liqueur—sweet but aged. Something dry cuts through to prevent it from getting too cloying. The result smells good; it’s an opulent fragrance, better suited for cold climates and nights. I like it, but not enough to justify the price since it doesn’t last very long.

  • If you’re expecting a tobacco and mandarin scent, Tobacco Mandarin will disappoint you. Does it smell like tobacco? Yes, but a rough one that almost transports me to smoke or ash. Does it smell like mandarin? Yes, but not a citrusy one, rather a sweet, almost overripe one. All of this evokes a slightly alcoholic liqueur, something sweet but aged, dry, and not overdone. It smells good, it’s opulent, more suited for cold climates and nighttime situations. I like it but not enough to spend what it costs, as it would see very little use.

  • Smells perfectly spiced citrus, as if you were next to tempered cardamom seeds. The tobacco is noticeable at the start, combining with that blood mandarin that seems like a small grapefruit. The evolution is fast, interesting, and precious; the final imprint is a subdued citrus echo with spices. A very beautiful and particular work of art.

With these notes, it feels like being hugged. The tobacco and that orange citrus, as it dries, feel smoky; the incense gradually takes over and is key, along with the mandarin, to soften the blow of the cumin, which comes out totally and absolutely as the protagonist. The spiced notes dominate and the subtle leather accord completes the base together with the woody oud, also very faint.

  • A sweet, rich, affectionate, and comforting amber, but with a huge caveat: on my skin, I can’t even smell it after two hours, and for a perfume at this price, it’s unacceptable. I tried it in a decant and thought the short longevity was due to sample degradation, as it’s said to be abundant. Grave mistake; unfortunately, on my skin it’s a ‘want but can’t have,’ but as a scent, it’s exquisite.

  • Smells like incense with bitter rose undertones; I don’t smell the mandarin anywhere. What a pity, because it’s not what I imagined. In my opinion, Bal D’Afrique is much more pleasant. This Tobacco Mandarin plays with the imaginary: either you love the resinous incense as the star or better look for other alternatives.

  • I don’t smell any citrus or mandarin; it’s very spiced and the dark incense takes over. I love the scent even though it wasn’t what I expected. It doesn’t seem to last long on my skin, so I’ll save it to try again in a few days.

  • Tobacco Mandarin is pure Byredo flower: a blond, incense-spiced tobacco with ladanum touches of vanilla and sweetness. The heart is a ripe, subdued mandarin, nothing sparkly, adding no chill. At first, cumin and coriander hit hard but soon settle as the mandarin and amber balance everything. As it dries, a woody oud emerges, adding body without stealing the show. It’s very warm, ideal for autumn and winter, with good projection and moderate longevity (around 7 hours); perhaps I expected more given the concentration. It’s elegant; I wear it for special occasions like the theater. It’s my favorite from the brand and one of the best spiced tobaccos on the market, but beware: if you don’t like cumin, there’s plenty of it and it will be an immediate turn-off.
