  Haven’t written here in a while, but since this gem had no reviews, I decided to help others discover it. It’s a classic from over 20 years ago, and while few know about it, it’s incredibly rich and makes me want to sniff myself constantly. I grabbed the last bottle at a local perfumerie for 250 pesos (about $13). To be honest, with my nose a bit tired, it didn’t fully convince me at first, but for such a low price, I have no regrets. It’s one of my best buys and already sits in my top 13. The opening is strong, with lots of alcohol and a very artificial pear note that reminds me of supermarket perfumes like Antonio Banderas; the first time you might be put off, but have patience because the magic comes later. After 10 or 15 minutes, the alcohol fades and that very masculine teak wood emerges, wrapped in a subtle lavender that makes it feel clean, accompanied by characterful spices, notably cloves (though I won’t admit it, it smells like the dentist but very softly). Imagine being inside a lumberyard or carpentry shop with fresh wood; it’s creamy, similar to Classic Old Spice but without that cinnamon and vanilla touch. If you like woody and spicy scents, you’ll love it; if you’re looking for something fresh, aquatic, or sweet like the current trend, this isn’t for you. It smells like ‘man, man,’ just like the Old Spice commercial. I see it as ideal for fall and winter, though I believe fragrances don’t have fixed seasons: if you like it, wear it in spring or summer, just not in extreme heat. Longevity is about 6 hours, very noticeable, then just skin scent; projection is good for the first two hours before fading. There are few YouTube reviews, except one by Dr. SmellGood who says it dries down similar to Chanel Allure Home Sport Extreme, but I haven’t tried that. Definitely doesn’t resemble the Versace Pure Homme I own; that one is citrusy and soapy, nothing like this Perry Ellis Portafolio Red, which is totally woody and spicy without citrus. If you’re looking for something different from the current aquatic and sweet trend, this is an excellent option, especially at the normal price of 400 to 500 pesos (about $25) and because it’s so obscure yet easy to find despite being from 1999. I just hope Andrés Perfume-Man doesn’t review it, because he’d surely say ‘puff’ and the price would skyrocket, just like what happened with Mont Blanc Starwalker 😂

I picked it up at a local perfumerie for 250 pesos (about $13), the last one they had. Honestly, I didn’t expect much; I tested it at the counter with a tired nose and didn’t notice it well, but for the super low price, I took it and have no regrets. It’s one of the smartest fragrance purchases I’ve ever made and is already in my top 13. To the point: the opening is brutal, lots of alcohol mixed with a very artificial pear, sounding like those supermarket perfumes like Antonio Banderas. If you try it the first time, you might think it’s bad, but have patience. The magic arrives at the dry-down; after 10 or 15 minutes, the alcohol goes away and that very masculine teak wood emerges, wrapped in a subtle lavender that makes it feel clean, accompanied by characterful spices. The one I notice most is the clove, as they say here in Mexico (though I won’t admit it, it smells like the dentist but softly). Imagine being inside a lumberyard or carpentry shop; that’s the vibe.   Just bought it, and honestly, John Varvatos has been heavily inspired by this fragrance to create Artisan Blu. They are practically identical.
