MFK’s Oud Velvet Mood saves the brand with its handling of oud. It opens with a mineral, rough oud that’s devoid of sweetness and very masculine (even though it’s labeled unisex). After half an hour, it softens with a soapy balsamic touch, but the oud remains. I didn’t detect the cinnamon; perhaps it would have added warmth and balance. It steers away from the typical oud-saffron combos. The quality is typical of the brand: the oud is incredible, nothing synthetic, more intense than in other brands, and without any medicinal smell. The performance is brutal, lasting over 12 hours. However, despite all that, I wouldn’t buy it because as a fragrance, it doesn’t convince me; it lacks something to surprise and enchant. I only see myself wearing it very occasionally, just for formal occasions.

MFK’s Oud Velvet Mood rescues the brand with a wood-focused oud treatment that opens mineral, rough, and unsweetened, very masculine despite being unisex. After half an hour, it softens with a soapy balsamic note, but the oud stays present. I didn’t notice the cinnamon, which might have provided more warmth and balance. It moves away from the usual oud-saffron pairings. The quality is what you’d expect: an incredible oud, completely synthetic-free, more potent than in other brands, and free of medicinal odors. The performance is brutal, lasting more than 12 hours. However, despite all that, I wouldn’t buy it because as a whole, it doesn’t work for me; it’s missing that extra ingredient that would make it irresistible. I only see myself wearing it for very formal occasions.

Like the late 2010s when everyone was chasing oud, this smells exactly like that. It doesn’t remind me of anything specific, but it also doesn’t stand out as unique because it lacks any special character. At least it’s not your typical oud-rose blend; it includes copaiba balsam, saffron, and Ceylon cinnamon, with the cinnamon and oud being the most noticeable on my skin. The longevity is just okay: for an extrait, it lasts me about 6 hours at most, and the sillage is barely noticeable after 15 minutes—you have to bring your nose close to your wrist to catch it. I used up my 1.5ml sample from the official website, and I’m glad I didn’t buy the bottle. As far as I can tell from the Maison Francis Kurkdjian website, they’ve already discontinued it, probably due to poor sales, which is totally understandable since it lacks personality.
