If there’s one good thing about approaching a fragrance by Francis Kurkdjian, it’s that you know it will at least be well-conceived. He’s one of those perfumers who treats a scent as a whole, giving his creations a very recognizable signature, regardless of whether you personally like them or not. Darkbeat told me about Midnight (a dark fragrance, I believe it was sold in French supermarkets), sent me a sample, and after testing it for a few days, I didn’t hesitate to buy a bottle. This aroma’s unmistakable personality was enough for me to add it to my collection without any second thoughts. It’s a quintessential 2000s oriental and very Kurkdjian: cloying sweet musk that recalls Le Male and Fleur du Male but taken to an extreme. It’s clear that by then, the direction of men’s perfumery trends was already becoming apparent. What makes this fragrance interesting—and what I really enjoyed—is precisely its oriental twist. Over that sugary musk mess lies a phenomenal touch of spicy, creamy, and fresh vanilla that completely reminds me of the Rouge style Xeryus popularized. It’s very elegant and attractive, sometimes bordering on feminine, and generally quite beautiful. Of course, if you’re looking for naturalness or high-quality ingredients here, look elsewhere. In Midnight, there’s a great idea, a perfume designed to smell absolutely fantastic and little more, though I wonder if there’s a more important goal in this hobby than that. And all that said, it has quite good longevity. So, this fragrance gets my ten.
Midnight is a magical moment where everything changes: the perfect time to dream, love, and live what life, moving at its own pace, has to offer. Let yourself be swept away by the night, its sensations, savor the pleasure and mystery of a new encounter that breaks the ice with this elegant gem, like a model to the rhythm of the music, in this nocturnal world where everything seems perfect. Daniel Hechter’s ‘Midnight’ is a fragrance with great personality, aromatically seductive, spicy and sweet, surely a pioneer of this trendy style. Different from 1 Million, less flashy and more glamorous, it’s a great ally for nightlife; some butterflies will fall into the trap if you add the right smiles and manners. Sincerely, I liked it; a more than honest proposal, quite long-lasting and olfactorily delicious, from the vast collection of the great Bofilla.
