  HABIT ROUGE HABIT DE CUIR launched in 2011 as a tribute to the original 1965 scent. Since I don’t own the vintage version for comparison, I’d say it’s not an Oriental Woody as the notes suggest, but rather a Citrus with Substance. Maybe I invented a new olfactory family? I love giving things new names. What’s the difference between a Citrus with Substance and a plain Citrus? It’s about longevity. Hesperides usually fade quickly, just to make us feel fresh and clean after a shower, but here’s the dilemma: do you know a citrus perfume that smells like citrus and lasts hours? The answer is no, I don’t. Citrus and longevity are enemies. But if Guerlain insists on launching a citrus that outperforms the average, I vote with my wallet because it succeeds! Guerlain gets to work, creates a Limited Edition with a red leather case, and presents its new CITRUS GUERLINADE. Yes sir, that’s a Citrus with Substance: a Guerlinade Citrus. What’s all this about Guerlinade? It’s a hesperide with everything: bergamot, lime, lemon, mandarin, and orange. That’s how HABIT ROUGE EN CUIR opens: Onomatopoeic Citrus (the word citrus alone makes our mouths water). But Guerlain knows that doesn’t last, so it pulls its ace in the hole, what made Guerlain what it is: THE GUERLINADE. This appears in all its glory; creamy, rich, soft, powdery, boudoir-like, dusted, poudre que te poudre, teint que te teint. Come on, come on. The performance of the Ballet de la Guerlinade Habit Rouge en Cuir begins. Touts en Barre. The Benjuí’s Battement Frappé, creamy, milky, and vanilla-scented, intensifies with the Demi-Plié of vanilla. The Pas de Deux, performed by rose and sandalwood, finds its support in the Arabesques of jasmine, sandalwood, patchouli, and amber, with a signature touch from the Guerlain house. And they manage to turn that Onomatopoeic Citrus of the beginning (solemn and grave) into a Floral Woody Unisex Citrus that transcends good and evil. That’s a Citrus with Substance.
