Marketing Dept at J.P. Gaultier: – People are asking for Gaultier 2 to return. Who knows. How about we launch something with the same name, hype it up as if it’s the same beloved composition, create expectations, and then drop something different? Perfumer: – Hold my cubata! ❤️ Dior loves this.
What baffles me most is that people act as if they’ve already smelled the perfume, even though I don’t know if it even launched on October 3rd. It’s fascinating what’s happening on this website, worthy of a sci-fi movie where daredevils write reviews based on what they imagine. Mind-blowing.
Has anyone tried this yet? I still can’t find it in stores here in Spain.
I saw the name and thought this singular fragrance was back. I knew the 2016 vintage version and underestimated it until I got the 120ml bottle two years later, and what a great purchase. I see the new launch keeps the name but changes the notes. What’s the marketing logic? Wouldn’t it make more sense to launch a flanker of the original instead of using the same name to ‘recapture’ loyal customers who will be duped?
Marketing geniuses: they bring back a discontinued perfume, change all the notes so it doesn’t smell like the vintage version, and for that, they could have just launched a ‘Gaultier 3’ and been done with it.
So many negative reviews without even having heard it really impact me. It was my go-to perfume back in 2007, so I’m the first interested party in it smelling like its previous formula. I seem to have read that the original did have orange blossom (jasmine), which is why not all notes were on Fragrantica. It was expected and normal that the bottle wouldn’t be the same; every day bottles lean towards more geometric and sober lines. I won’t say if it’s the same or not until I try it. On the other hand, €100 for 100ml is the recommended price (which JPG will have on their official website), that doesn’t mean it will sell at that price in perfumeries, and especially in Spain.
It’s not going to be available in Spain right away. This October, it can be found for €100 in France, Germany, the UK, and Benelux through the Jean Paul Gaultier website. If the bottle has changed, the perfume isn’t the same, that’s evident. Fortunately, I have the authentic one with its magnet bottle, just for opening, which I bought in 2016, but well, when it arrives, it will be tested. By the way, I’ve never paid €100 for the original. Will it be a niche version?
@olfactorymemories, of course, here reading the notes (often written incorrectly) you already deduce the scent because you’re prestigious perfumers. I emphasize the same thing: you’re reckless and without hearing it, you rant even about longevity, it’s ridiculous. They don’t even know the real notes of the old Gaultier 2 because it doesn’t just have three; it has a very pronounced and noticeable floral part that isn’t declared. I know this because I have a 120ml bottle of the old version. To go further, it’s already out in Germany and discussed in forums that the scent is completely identical to the old one. I trust a German who already smelled it more than those commenting here with random hypotheses and no basis.
This is shameful. A product like this is only launched in three countries via web and they don’t ship outside. On eBay, Germans are making a fortune selling Gaultier 2 (2022) for €150 and €250. What a shame that Puig and Jean Paul Gaultier allow this; it should have been a worldwide launch. According to German forums, it smells exactly like the 2005 version but softer. If I manage to get a bottle, I’ll give my opinion, but with those resale prices, Jean Paul Gaultier’s mother is going to buy it.
@olfactorymemories, what’s up, friend? I’m not a master of anything, but here on Fragrantica there are many apprentices of everything and masters of nothing. You’re stuck on the notes; I emphasize that houses rarely give all the olfactory pyramids and those notes are commercial. Most likely Jean Paul Gaultier owns the original formula from Francis Kurkdjian, so they just have to replicate it. Who am I to tell you what a flanker is? But I’ll give you an example: Le Male and Le Male Essence de Parfum (this one is a flanker). In Gaultier 2, it’s not a flanker, it’s a reissue of a discontinued perfume. A flanker is a variant of the same fragrance like Dior Homme, where concentration and notes change starting from the original base. If it were called Gaultier 2 Oud Edition, it would be a flanker. It’s a bit annoying, but check German forums where users already have the bottle and say it smells exactly the same, except it’s a tiny bit softer. It’s logical that a perfume from 2005 after almost 20 years will smell denser due to extreme maceration and the volatility of the top notes. I think there’s not much more to add.
No grudges, friend, we’re just debating.
And in the end… has anyone actually tried it?
They were going to get it for me in Germany, but now it’s out of stock on their website. I suppose it will reach all countries sooner or later, but this is creating a huge hype.
There’s bound to be controversy here because the listed notes aren’t everything there is, and tastes vary; plus, the ingredients aren’t 100% identical even if it smells similar, which is why it was discontinued. Francis Kurkdjian has the mastery to achieve 90% of the original. I’ve tested Guerlain reformulations that are good, and sometimes the difference is just the maceration time. I enjoy well-preserved ‘oxidized’ fragrances that become intense and dense vanillas. I hope to try the relaunch soon, though I’m not holding out much hope. I tested the original once or twice and liked it. Please be serious and stop the hate; not everyone appreciates things the same way, but many come here seeking opinions to make a purchase.
Just got it from Germany and it’s a relief: the 2022 version is identical to the discontinued one, with that floral opening and amber-vanilla base. I only notice the opening is slightly softer and it doesn’t last as long, but it remains a worthy continuation of an icon.
I liked the dry down; it’s very cozy. Not so much the opening, as it’s too floral for my taste. I haven’t tried the original version to compare, but it reminded me quite a bit of Joop! Homme, with a higher-quality scent, like a “deluxe” version of the same thing.
Well, after waiting quite a long time, I can finally talk about the Gaultier 2 2022 edition. First off, I was a user of Gaultier 2; it was my signature scent until they discontinued it. I can affirm it’s exactly the same perfume as the 2005 version, the only change I notice is in projection and longevity, which are fairer in the 2022 edition, something I expected. Very happy, and I hope they start distributing it in Spanish perfume shops.
To everyone interested: it’s now available in Spain from the JPG website for €100.
If I had to pick one perfume launch from all I’ve smelled, I’d choose the vintage version of Gaultier 2. It’s impactful, hypnotic, and pleasant. The drydown loses the initial spell but remains a marvel. What never convinced me was the sweet, vanilla-based base; too feminine. I never bought the original for that reason, plus it seemed cheap when I was a college student. Today it arrived, and I confirm it smells practically the same, though I notice some changes: the opening isn’t as impactful; it’s missing something it had before. The drydown is the same, but in the final stages, I notice less of that intense vanilla base and more woody, earthy notes that I love, making it feel more masculine. In my opinion, the big change is that they lowered the vanilla. All in all, it’s Gaultier 2, a marvel I’m going to enjoy like a dwarf. Keep in mind this is my first impression, and my comparisons come from my olfactory memory from years ago, which can be unreliable.
If I have to choose the opening of a perfume from all I’ve ever smelled in my life, I’d go with the vintage version of Gaultier 2. Impactful, hypnotic, and pleasant until you can’t say enough. The opening spell fades as it dries, but it remains a marvel. What never fully convinced me were the overly vanilla and sweet base notes. I never bought Gaultier 2 because of that vanilla base that felt too feminine, and especially because, as a college student, I was poorer than a baptism with water. I had plenty of chances to buy it, and every time I entered a perfume shop, it was rare that I left without a tester strip of Gaultier 2 or having tried it on my skin. Today it finally arrived, and I received it with great excitement. I confirm it’s practically the same scent, but I’ve noticed some changes. The opening isn’t as impactful as I remembered; it’s missing something it used to have… the dry down is practically the same, but where I do notice a difference is in the base notes during the final stages of the perfume. That intense vanilla base is gone, or if it’s there, I barely perceive it; instead, I detect woody, earthy notes that I personally love and that make this special scent feel more masculine. In my opinion, this is the biggest change: they’ve notably reduced the vanilla. But in the end, it’s Gaultier 2, it’s a marvel, and I’m going to enjoy it like crazy. Keep in mind that this review is actually a first impression of a perfume that arrived today, and my comparisons with the vintage version come from my olfactory memory from many years ago and might be inaccurate.
Just arrived, and after spraying it… it’s 100% identical to the discontinued 2005 version, I have it fresh in my mind and can confirm. Don’t waste your money on a vintage bottle. Cheers.
I completely agree with Mithrandir’s review. I used Gaultier 2 many times from when it launched until it was discontinued. I still have a bottle of the vintage version stuck to my fridge 🙂. This new version is indeed very, very similar, but upon first spray, I remember the original as more “vibrant,” more intense, with greater projection and longevity. Now, it feels a bit muted, and the vanilla part is almost unnoticeable when it dries. Still, I must say yes, it’s very similar to the 2005 version and I love how it smells. I bought a bottle when it was relaunched before it was sold in Spain, and another one more recently. Although they smell the same, as a curiosity, the box of the first one I bought listed ingredients as jasmine, sandalwood, and ambergris. The second one changed and listed the original 2005 ingredients: musk, vanilla, and amber… Well, things of marketing…
I never thought the return of a discontinued perfume would bring me so much happiness. It’s still the same, wonderful, and pleasant, totally unisex. The only thing I hope is that they don’t discontinue it again, because it would be a shame for many, including me.
I never thought the return of a discontinued perfume would make me so happy; it remains the same, wonderful, and pleasant as always, totally unisex. The only thing I hope is that they don’t take it off the market again, because that would be a shame for many of us, including myself.
The Gaultier 2 reissue is a tribute to a perfume that made history, and for me, it brings back precious fragments of a life lived to the fullest, even in the toughest moments. It’s not just a trip down memory lane, but a balance (achieved?) that, at this stage of maturity, is positive because it helps you realize that those who truly love rarely regret their choices. When I heard Gaultier 2 was returning, I was quietly excited, though worried that many creations revived from a glittering past often turn out to be bitter disappointments. But that’s not the case here. The new Gaultier 2 bears a clear resemblance to its illustrious predecessor, though it’s lighter and airier (the raw power, one of the main sources of its popularity, is no longer there as such) and features a noticeable floral note that makes it even more unisex. The result is frankly good, though original owners might notice it’s less bold and scandalous, yet rounder and better suited to today’s world. The musk and vanilla have been toned down in intensity and almost replaced olfactively by sandalwood and jasmine, making it more mature and versatile. Unfortunately, it can’t bring back the emotions I lived through, but a great scent has returned—a modern interpretation of this immortal classic. Even if it falls slightly short in comparison, I recommend everyone give it a try if they have the chance. Good job JPG, despite being impossible to find in physical stores. Courtesy of Mithrandir.
I used to wear this perfume for a guy I knew, and it was addictive; whenever I got close to him, I couldn’t stop smelling it—it had a very sexy vibe. They discontinued it shortly after, and I haven’t smelled it since. When I heard it was coming back, I rushed to buy a bottle and… what memories! Honestly, I’m not sure if it’s very different from the original, but it seemed exactly the same to me. Since then, I’ve worn it for going out at night and special occasions. On my skin (I don’t know if it’s my pH or because I’m a woman), it smells very vanilla-like, even though that note isn’t listed. I see it as totally unisex, perfect for nighttime and cooler weather. It has excellent sillage and projection. If you spray it on a coat or scarf, you can smell it for days. The fact that it’s only available online now gives it a certain exclusivity; you won’t be smelling it everywhere on the street. Very happy about its return 😍.

First time trying this Gaultier 2, what a wonderful scent. I own the 2005 version and it’s identical to the original: musk, vanilla, and amber. Such a delicious smell, especially once it dries on the skin. It has great longevity and has become my favorite; the musk smells absolutely amazing.
