Descripción

Encounter by Calvin Klein is a woody oriental fragrance for men. Launched in 2012, this composition was created by Honorine Blanc and Pierre Negrin. The top notes unfold with rum, cardamom, and mandarin; the heart reveals cognac, pepper, patchouli, and jasmine; while the base notes settle on oud wood, cedar, and musk.

  • I tried it and it’s good, but with a caveat: the sweet opening with tangerine candy notes was amazing, but then the cognac and rum make it serious and adult, even giving me stomach pangs. I think it’s for people aged 35 to 45. The good thing is CK is making more elaborate fragrances, though ultimately the customer decides.

Starts with the sweet citrus and what I assume is the rum note, not very natural. Middle has some jasmine, a bit of cognac, and the end has a very soft musk and some cedar. The oud is almost non-existent. Quite disappointing as a woody oriental: moderate to weak sillage. The opening is interesting, but then the intensity drops dramatically and it stays for more than seven hours, but too close to the skin. They must have paid Alexander Skarsgård’s face too well, because honestly I don’t think he would use this fragrance for even a moment. If you want to go completely unnoticed, this is your fragrance. If you’re looking for one with an oud note or a ‘real’ oriental, this isn’t it. More for autumn.

  • I could say it’s a sort of copy of Halston Z14, but much fainter and less annoying. On my skin, it had a moderate to low sillage, lower than moderate, during the first half hour. After that, it stayed very close to the skin for about 5 hours, then simply disappeared. Regardless of its sillage and longevity, which are poor or scarce, I think it’s just another fragrance, an average one, bordering on generic and cheap, just like the multi-editions that are little original and boring, such as Allure by Chanel. Maybe it’s due to the chemicals or essences they use to make fragrances; because of that, there are almost no original creations anymore, most are simple variations of others, just like this one.

Greetings, I just acquired this fragrance. I must say it’s good but only up to a point; it’s nothing extraordinary and won’t change the world of fragrances, it just does its job. Woody with liquor notes (I suppose rum and cognac), some jasmine and woods. Its weak point is, as almost everyone mentions, its poor longevity and low sillage. Although it lasts about 5 or 6 hours, it’s very close to the skin. Still, I recommend it, but I think it’s for people 30 and up.

DELICIOUS is the word. Well-executed, with non-abusive rum and cognac, linear but addictive. I loved it last night; it reminds me of Dirty English by Juicy Couture and Christian Audigier for Him, with a fruity touch and soft alcohol. I like it and it will be one of several in my collection. The packaging is very well presented; I like the relief on the glass. Recommended for lovers of sweet scents with rum and cognac. It smells rich and I approve with a 9/10 rating.

DELICIOUS is the word for this Encounter. A fairly well-executed perfume with a rum and cognac touch that isn’t pushed to extremes, non-linear but addictive. When I applied it yesterday to go out for a night walk, I loved it because it reminds me of a mix between Juicy Couture Dirty English and Christian Audigier for Him, not counting the fruity touch of Audigier but with that soft, sweet alcohol note. I like it quite a bit and it will be one of the ones I keep in my collection. Very well-presented packaging, I like the bottle with that relief on the front glass. Highly recommended for lovers of sweet perfumes with a rum and cognac touch. Repeating, the cognac and rum aren’t abusive but smell very rich. Rating it 9/10.

  • I picked up this fragrance yesterday in 100ml and it’s exquisite. But it’s more for personal enjoyment, as it doesn’t have great longevity or sillage; it’s only perceived in greetings or hugs. Although with a bit of over-application it doesn’t become so light. Anyway, a good fragrance, not one of the best, but good.

  • Based on the notes on the page, you might think it’s not that great. You expect something strong, heavy, and classic. But if you smell it without looking at the notes, it’s exquisite, a fragrance too special, I’d even say UNIQUE. It’s liquorish, very measured, not offensive, noticeable and mysterious; you walk by and everyone looks at the trail. It’s not a strong trail, it’s delicate. After 3 hours it comes back close to the skin, but from there it easily lasts 10 hours. The citrus side with the cardamomo makes it special, the patchouli gives it a classic touch to create a masculine image. I rate it a 10 for aroma and leave the rest to your skin chemistry. The bottle is very good, it has the letter K in relief, the only CK one that has captivated me.

  • Based on the notes on the website, I expected something strong and classic, but it smells exquisite and is UNIQUE. It’s boozy, measured, and mysterious; the trail is delicate but everyone looks at you. After 3 hours, it drops to skin-level and lasts easily 10 hours. The citrus and cardamomo make it special, while the patchouli gives it a masculine touch. I rate it 10 for aroma, though the rest depends on the skin. The bottle is top-notch with the K relief; it’s the only CK fragrance that captivated me.

  • At first, they only share notes of cardamom, mandarin, jasmine, and patchouli. But to my nose, it vibrates similarly to the classic Joop! Homme, which makes me like this Encounter a lot. Dark, liquorish, and woody opening that then gives way to a warm, sweet, and spicy evolution. Good longevity, good sillage. It’s a sweet and seductive fragrance. I imagine it more for night and cold or temperate weather. An interesting proposal from CK.

A very masculine fragrance that follows commercial trends (like Carolina Herrera) while including niche touches with liquor aromas as innovative notes since 2010. It has oud, soft and synthetic, but that doesn’t make it any less interesting. It has body and a dense aroma in the first few hours, evolving into a woody dry-down that lasts about 10 hours. On my skin, it gives a sweet-woody tone where sensual cardamomo stands out with hints of cedar and rum sugar. I detect the oud from start to finish, very faint. It’s masculine, dense, and full-bodied; I can’t find any similarities to other scents, it’s recognizable and has a great memory effect. At the current price, it’s an honest perfume with good performance. A magical and different touch from Calvin Klein. A charming fragrance.

Very masculine, it follows the footsteps of commercial and niche perfumes that include liquors since 2010. It has soft synthetic oud but interesting. It has body, a dense aroma at the start, and transitions to woody at skin level after 10 hours. On my skin, it’s sweet-woody, highlighting sensual cardamomo with cedar and rum sugar. I notice the oud faintly from start to finish. It’s recognizable, has a good memory effect, and is honest and cost-effective for the price. A magical and different touch from CK, with charm.

If CK took care of the longevity, it would be my favorite house. At first I thought, ‘wow, not bad,’ but then it convinced me: a sweet and fresh tangerine opening with cardamomo, followed by rum and cognac, a delight. I don’t smell oud, it feels synthetic but tolerable. In the end, it leaves pepper and a woody base with rum. It’s rich and youthful for 25+, but the projection lasts only 1 hour and total longevity is 5 hours. It’s similar to Bentley Intense, perhaps. Too bad for the poor Encounter; don’t use it in extreme climates, only spring and autumn.

  • DavidPriest

If Calvin Klein took better care of their perfume longevity, it would be my favorite house, but alas… I tried it and on the first spray I thought ‘Wow, not bad’, and after wearing it a few times, I was convinced. It’s a sweet yet fresh opening where mandarin takes the lead with a hint of cardamom; then comes the rum and cognac, a real delight. I don’t detect the oud, which is usually present in other fragrances… It is synthetic, but tolerable and pleasant. Towards the end, the sweetness fades and I notice a pepper note with a woody base wrapped in rum and cognac; that’s what I like most. Rich and youthful, perfect for 25 and up, what more could you ask for? The problem is longevity: very rich, but on my skin it projects for about an hour, then drops off, lingering close to the skin for another 4 hours, totaling 5. After that, nothing. They say it resembles Bentley Intense, I’ve never heard of it, but if it is, I’ll buy it to compare. It’s rich but doesn’t last long, a shame for the poor Encounter. Don’t use it in extreme climates, only spring and autumn.

  • In its opening, it instantly reminds me of Euphoria for women. It’s an enchanting sweetness that doesn’t overwhelm, and I find it better suited for female use at this point. It also reminds me of Joop! in its sparkling sweetness, although they don’t smell the same. Later, it becomes cozy and clean, and I see it as usable for a man. It’s a very interesting fragrance that stands out in the sea of generic scents today. If a woman wore this, she’d be smelling it all day, but I still don’t see myself wearing it. I see it for winter nights.

  • CK’s Encounter enters with an exquisite development of boozy blends, a base of oud, cardamomo, and non-cloying sweet tangerine. They say it’s similar to Halston Z14; for me, there might be a faint reminder. This fragrance can be melancholic due to its darkness.

  • CK Encounter enters with an exquisite development of liquor-like blends with that Oud base; the cardamom and tangerine with their non-cloying sweet touch are said to resemble Halston Z14, though for me, there might be a faint reminder. This fragrance can be melancholic, sad due to its darkness.

  • I think I can call it the best male fragrance from Calvin Klein, at least for me, alongside CK One Shock, and every time they discontinue a good fragrance, it’s a real blow… I’ll keep the remaining culins as gold, along with others like By from D&G, Au Masculin, Gucci 1, etc., etc.

CK Encounter is classified as an amber woody, but I perceive it as more spicy—actually, softly spicy, with very faint sweet touches. It’s a very fine and elegant fragrance; the dry down shows that reminiscence of early 20th-century perfumes. I’d say if you mix Sauvage Parfum with YSL L’Homme, it would smell very similar to this Encounter. The opening is a bit strong, but there’s no rum, just extremely high-quality tangerine. As it dries down, you get a cardamomo very similar to what YSL achieves in their L’Homme line, subtle woody touches, and a cognac you almost have to guess; honestly, I can smell it more on blotter than on my skin. No oud, absolutely none. At that point (the dry down), it becomes more linear, and that’s when the compliments start; it’s a very well-accepted perfume, you can tell people like it. I think it’s ideal for a management meeting; daily wear feels too little, it’s a bit too elegant for the office, but it could work. Despite the black bottle (extremely elegant), it’s not for night use, only for an intimate date with someone who fits this type of fragrance, so a dark blue bottle would suit it better. I checked that girls under 25 barely like it anymore; it seems old to them. Performance is pretty bad, and I agree with the voters: scarce longevity and light projection. I had to resort to the 13-spray trick, then it goes from light to moderate in both longevity and projection (1 on chest, 4 on each side of neck, 2 in hair, occipital region, hairy base, behind ears, and 2 on clothes as a diffuse spray—clarification: it doesn’t stain or bleed, not even on white). Under these conditions, it lasted 4 hours and projected 2 to 3, but it doesn’t hold up for a whole workday. Haha, I guess the 50ml bottle won’t last me long with this usage method. To summarize, an elegant fragrance at a great price; I found a 2012 batch by chance for $33, but it’s not essential, at least for my mini collection. Respectful greetings, comrades.

Encounter is classified as a woody amber, but to me it feels softly spiced with a subtle sweetness. It’s fine, elegant, and reminiscent of early 20th-century perfumes. Mixed with Sauvage Parfum or L’Homme by YSL, it smells very similar. The opening is strong without rum, featuring high-quality tangerine. As it dries down, there’s cardamomo like in YSL L’Homme, subtle woods, and cognac that you have to guess, more on paper than on skin. There’s no oud. It becomes linear and you start to appreciate it; it’s very pleasing. Ideal for a managerial meeting; for the office, it’s too elegant. The black bottle is elegant, but not for night; a dark blue would be better. Those under 25 find it old-fashioned. Poor performance: scarce longevity and weak projection. With 13 sprays (chest, neck, hair, clothes), it lasted 4 hours with 2-3 hours of projection, but it didn’t make it through the afternoon. The 50ml bottle won’t last long like this. Elegant, good price, batch 2012 at $33, not essential but respectful greetings.

  • In the case of this fragrance, I’ll speak from memory because my wife only gifted me one bottle years ago when we were still dating. I remember that whenever she wore it, the sensation it gave me was smelling like some kind of toothpaste or something similar, and I couldn’t figure out why it triggered that perception. I feel unable to contribute more about this fragrance, but I wonder if anyone else has had a similar experience with it.

A very rich, masculine, spicy scent, and strangely, a bit metallic. What a pity they don’t make it anymore, because without a doubt, it’s one of Calvin Klein’s best. I used to wear it to go out at night; it had an intoxicating aroma that made me feel great.

  • I bought the last 50ml bottle blind, almost given away for $20, batch 2012. You could tell it had been sitting there for years unsold, and they just wanted to get rid of it. I stumbled upon a fine, elegant fragrance. Looking for familiar olfactory references, this feels fresher and younger than CK Men Prive. I’ve seen comparisons to the Essencial Oud line from Natura, but those Natura scents feel rougher and older compared to this CK Encounter. The aroma is a very rich blend of cardamom, pepper, and a hint of cognac. If there’s oud, you can’t detect it. Everything is wrapped nicely with top notes of citrus and the declared tangerine. It’s a perfume delight. It lacks the punch to wear to a wedding since other scents will overpower it, but it’s ideal for lunch, formal dinners, or dates (avoid extreme heat). It dresses a young man formally and becomes less formal as he ages. EDIT 2025: Is this Oud Wood by CK? It feels that way, but fresher and more youthful. 5/10

  • It’s a shame the projection is so low because the scent itself is different… it feels enchanting and high quality. I was genuinely surprised by it.

  • Youssef Y

My mom gifted me a 100ml bottle back in 2016. As a newbie, I absolutely loved that fresh-sweet vibe. I wore it during the day in summer and at night to go out, and honestly, it really shines at night. I haven’t heard anything quite like it, even after trying so many perfumes. I think it’s been discontinued since I can’t find it in stores; online versions look like knockoffs, so I’m not risking it. As for longevity, on my skin and clothes it lasts a minimum of 7 hours until I shower. I don’t get why people say it fades quickly. Sure, pH matters, but I’m getting 3 to 7 hours consistently. I don’t know, it feels like they’re trying to give this excellent fragrance a bad reputation.
