  • Undoubtedly, it’s a very beautiful fragrance for lovers of rose and patchouli. I was given a sample and tried it on myself and my boyfriend. It lasts longer on his skin than on mine, but the longevity is still scarce and the sillage is minimal. If I’m going to spend 130 euros, I certainly expect a different kind of performance. What a pity.

  • I love stumbling upon new releases that revive nearly forgotten accords. In this case, a transparent, clean chypre in the style of the eighties, that herbaceous and ammonia-like brightness that today feels unisex and reflective. When you’re happy to smell that medieval chypre again, you start wondering what the point is of editing another family member when it adds nothing. And that’s exactly what Eau Capitale lacks: it lacks personality; it’s exactly like all the ones it inspires. Add to that the fact that Diptyque isn’t cheap, so functionality is low. Imagining this proposal is simple: isolate the bergamot, cold patchouli, and rose or carnation formula from perfumes like Diva Ungaro, Sisley Eau de Soir, or Paloma Picasso. Take the honey and flowers out of Diva, the moss out of Eau de Soir, and the animal notes out of Paloma. What you’re left with is pure clean, forest, monastic, mystical light. Basically, that green Fendi from the eighties or a less cluttered Soir de Lune. Or cheaper versions like Quartz by Molyneux without the overdose of flowers or Coriandre by Jean Couturier with better quality. And little more, at most refined notes, perceptible, but nothing that makes you levitate upon finding the perfect forest chypre. The only difference is the pink pepper, which isn’t obvious, just slightly sweetens as it dries, an abstract and harmless sweetness. Eau Capitale, or rather, Eau Redundante. PS. Poor sillage, regular longevity. Eau de parfum, miau.

  • “Tears shed for having lost the sun will prevent you from seeing the stars.” I started with this Tagore quote that immediately came to mind while enjoying this SPECTACULAR EDP. Let me highlight this Diptyque gem (an absolute must-have on my shelf); I discovered it thanks to a store associate who confessed it was her favorite. It’s crucial to find a trusted perfumer who truly knows their stuff. I found mine 👍. I asked her exactly what it contained, and she sighed almost dramatically: “Rose with Patchouli.” I responded with skepticism: “A Rose Patchouli Chypre? Isn’t that a bit cliché?” I haven’t found something I like with that old combo in ages (there are my tears). A second later, I sprayed it on, and guys: my mind was blown! (and that’s when I saw the stars). What an incredible scent. It’s a modern, perfectly balanced take on this well-known formula. Someone might kill me for saying I like it more than Portrait of a Lady, but I feel it, sorry. A clear proof that in perfumery, you don’t need many notes to create something beautiful. On a woman, it’s narcotic, but on my skin as a man, the Patchouli softens the rose (which I swear is greenish) and turns it romantic, Victorian, and mysterious. It’s not for gifting, not for blind buys, not for everyone, and… thank God! because it wouldn’t be so special. It’s amazing to smell on someone else, look at them, and say “Eau Capitale, heinn?” in a “we’re accomplices in this crime” vibe 👀. The longevity on my skin is very good. As a Diptyque fan, except for one or two, they all offer excellent performance. A marvel in 75mls for those who choose it, because that’s what it does: it selects its victims and “hooks” them. Smells exactly like Provenzano’s Patchouli Noir. You need to love both rose and patchouli equally for this one. If you do, you’ll absolutely adore it, whether you’re a man or a woman. It’s a very wearable scent, perfect for semi-formal or formal occasions in the evening or at night. The longevity is insane. It smells very much like Diptyque—unisex, vintage, yet with that certain something that makes it unique and special.
