I love this perfume. I tried it at a perfumery and fell in love; I want to own it. It’s a hard scent to describe: earthy, sweet yet floral. It’s a delight; I consider it quite unisex, I loved it, and it’s something unique that isn’t smelled often. One of Tom Ford’s best gems. Edit: I got a 10ml decant and I’m repeating myself, it’s beautiful, plus its performance is very good.
At first, I was horrified by those thick custard notes attacking me, dense as a neutron star. Turns out, past the singularity, there’s a wonderful fresh and wild world. It’s still sweet, also dark, like spicy and creamy mists. Everything is intimately mixed, so unitary that I struggle to break down what I smell. Maybe a twinkling gleam of elusive vanilla reigns, like the sun behind the clouds, giving a guiding point. As it dries down, the spicy spices and the gleam of less hydrated vanilla remain more. It approaches the dryness of an office incense. Affable, without losing its cordiality.
I bought it a couple of days ago. I love that opening with truffle; it’s quite strong; what predominates is the truffle, flowers, and powdery bitter chocolate. Spectacular. The first time I smelled it, I was impacted by it being a particular and strong aroma, but once it dries down, it’s a delight. I see it as totally unisex: something difficult the first few times, but with this, compliments don’t run out. The longevity is incredible: it lasted me about 15 hours even though I went to the gym and got sweaty; the projection is beastly. One of my favorites.
Black Orchid by TF by Jloveparfum: A Chypre-Oriental creation that combines mystery, intensity, and sophistication. For almost two decades, it has been a benchmark in perfumery. A work by Pierre Negrin and David Apel. It starts captivating, bright, and dark, absolutely warm, sweet, floral, and intoxicating, with musky, earthy, green, and citrus accords that unfold into an opulent heart of creamy, white, and yellow flowers (orchids, jasmine, gardenias, ylang-ylang) interwoven with spices and fruits. Over time, the exquisite smell of high-quality dark chocolate appears, with a bitter and warm touch, alongside the sumptuous vanilla that sweetens, creating amber and balsamic accords with patchouli and vetiver woods, while an incense halo emerges to wrap everything. It imparts depth, richness, and beauty. The substance is excellent, lasting more than 12 hours on my skin. Diffusion and trail are impressive. Sometimes it becomes a seduction tool. Its essence, inspired by classic and author perfumery, evokes more niche exclusivity than commercial appeal. In my appreciation, it’s timeless and avant-garde, distinguished by its femininity, exoticism, and elegance.
Unmistakable, with character and personality. No wonder it’s Tom’s signature scent. I’m fascinated by it. I wish it lasted and projected forever. Nothing is better for the cold. It won’t suit everyone, but if you’re one of the lucky few who do… you’ll enjoy it immensely.
Last July, I wrote a review encouraging men to use it, as I believe it’s totally unisex. I stand by that; additionally, in this new review, I want to mention that, in my opinion, it’s the perfect dupe for Black Orchid EDP. I’m referring to Black Origami by Maison Alhambra, one of the best dupes from that Arab house. In terms of scent, both versions are excellently crafted, and I’d dare say the performance surpasses the original. I clarify that I don’t intend to cause controversy or offend those who speak against houses that imitate or clone designer/niche products (whose opinions I respect). My intention is to let those limited by the high cost know there’s a magnificent alternative for less than 1/4 of the original value with great performance. Hope this is useful. Greetings to the community.
Oh, I wanted to love it. The opening is insane, and I like that final herbal woody tone, but something reminds me of a cemetery smell and makes me sad. It’s a resounding no for me.
I bought it blind with some trepidation since I usually wear my wife’s perfumes and had never bought one for myself. Black Orchid was love at first sniff: a magnificent composition that, despite being 10 years old, feels modern and original. On my skin, it’s evolving: starts aggressive and sharp with a subtle citrus, floral, and unknown note, perhaps truffle, slightly bitter and creamy. It quickly sweetens to give way to the best part: the floral and sweet evolution. Over time and with every air hit, you notice the chocolate, a hefty patchouli, woods (mainly sandalwood), light amber and incense nuances. It’s complex but pleasant and balanced: gourmand and sweet, with opulent yet subtle sweetness; oriental and lightly spiced. The woods give structure to a blend that seemed impossible at first but turns out magnificent. It looks like you want to bite it after spraying. Performance is solid at 8-9 hours, lasting days on clothes. Rated as feminine, but in my opinion, it’s unisex and leans more masculine. A 10.
It found a spot in my collection thanks to a gift from my mother; she used it and gave it to me, so I have a lot of affection for it. It was worn by an older person of the opposite gender, but I enjoy it too; a young man coming out of adolescence, and I can assure you, there’s no difference. It’s extremely refined, citrusy, and in my opinion, cloyingly citrusy at first. What I love is its evolution and Tom Ford’s magic trick of turning a promising citrus and floral perfume into a sweet, vibrant one. On my skin, the trail tends to be spicier and citrusy with fruity notes, but as it gets closer to the spray, it becomes sweeter and more relaxed thanks to the inner chocolate, vanilla, and amber. Recommended for starting in the world of sophisticated and elegant perfumes: dark but bright, full of life and personality, very versatile. I see myself wearing it at a wedding or a quiet Sunday with family. P.S.: If you’re looking for refined scents, remember that quality lies in the ingredients and the aroma, not so much in the performance.
My absolute favorite, though it’s not for everyone and love didn’t hit me all at once. Extremely refined and complex, 100% unisex. It’s potent and very spicy, with perfect longevity and projection that doesn’t overwhelm. If you get the chance, try it; it’s a unique and amazing profile.
The opening with earthy and mossy notes doesn’t let me appreciate the fragrance well, similar to Sisley’s Soir de Lune. But the dry down is pleasant and lasts forever.
I’m from Chile and have been reading Fragrantica for years to find my scents. Today is my first time posting, and I appreciate the tips that helped me imagine my future purchases. I tried Black Orchid at duty-free and was captivated. My reaction was: ‘it’s feminine BUT…’. I notice it in three stages: Opening, strong and dark, invasive with citrus but enchanting; Middle, after 30 minutes, the initial hit fades and the woody, earthy notes blend with the floral, making you feel sensual and luxurious; Dry down, the flowers shine with patchouli, chocolate, and sandalwood, lasting until the next day. It’s intense, floral, and woody, ideal for dressing up elegantly at night. It’s defined as feminine, but I know many men buy and wear it, and I understand why—in fact, I include myself. It’s a TF jewel, unforgettable for not going unnoticed.
It’s incredible; you can tell the superior quality and the artistry in the composition—it’s great perfumery. I bought it for myself for its elegance, but my husband took it from me and it suits him perfectly, so now we both enjoy it.
It’s among my top 10 perfumes… besides being a bomb, it’s an absolute treat to wear. A must-have for me.
I read wonderful things about this perfume and, as soon as I had the chance, I tried it. It was a total letdown; it’s not for everyone. The opening is strong and hits that floral note poorly, smelling bitter and overpowering the rest of the notes, reminding me of an elderly woman. I don’t get the taste, but I suppose for those who enjoy this, it’s well-composed and has personality.
Elegant, unique, and special. It’s the best oriental floral I’ve tried, even though the floral notes aren’t the most prominent. It’s dark, a blend of mystery, chocolate, and truffle. Some perfumes dress you up, and this is one of them. I love it!
Definitely the best perfume on the planet for me; it’s been my signature since 2007. It’s elegant, empowering, and screams luxury. The only downside is that in the reformulation, it lost a bit of its original essence.
Black Orchid is a seductive elixir of mystery. Imagine a night with a silver moon and deep, voluptuous air. Upon opening, you notice dark and exquisite notes where truffle and bergamot give way to the rich, opulent black orchid. Every drop is a passionate whisper that envelops you. The sandalwood and vanilla base add softness, like a secret promise between lovers. It’s a bold declaration of love that you don’t just wear, you live, leaving an unforgettable trail. It’s the symbol of an eternal romance where darkness intertwines with light.
Smelling it in the bottle is like stepping into a cemetery filled with flowers and incense, very gothic. But on the skin, it transforms completely: it becomes sweet, mystical, floral, and seductive. It reminds me of a young, empowered, upper-class woman who commands presence. It’s not for everyone or every occasion; a single drop is noticeable from afar and lasts all day.
Bought this as my first Tom Ford, and as a vanilla lover, it caught me off guard. The opening is a bit overwhelming, but after 15 minutes it settles down and that’s when it truly shines. It’s complex, mysterious, and elegant—very refined. I feel it’s more feminine, and although I haven’t worn it out yet, I’ll soon edit to share how people reacted.
This is a fragrance you definitely can’t buy blind, even if you read nothing but praises here and elsewhere. I briefly tested it with a decant from my wife; I admit its longevity, projection, and sillage are excellent, but I can’t pinpoint the standout note (maybe the truffle) that hasn’t quite won me over. In conclusion: buy a decant or test it in a perfumerie before purchasing to avoid buyer’s remorse.
Tom Ford Black Orchid is undoubtedly my favorite fragrance. Many label it as ‘feminine,’ but for me, it’s totally unisex. Smelling it for the first time was a whole experience. I walked into the perfumerie, saw it was on sale, and since I always want a Tom Ford, I decided to try it to see if I’d like it. The moment I smelled it, I detected the floral notes immediately, which convinced me to buy it. In short, I recommend you go smell it first before deciding whether to buy it. Thanks for reading.
I love it, I adore it, it’s addictive. What I like most are the very noticeable truffle notes, but I’m surprised they claim it has great sillage. No one has complimented me or asked what I’m wearing, unlike with Angel or Alien by Mugler. On my skin, it stays very close to the skin upon application with no projection, despite applying it generously and reapplying. It still fascinates me because I can’t find anything similar with good longevity and sillage, but I’m intrigued to understand why it seems so potent and long-lasting on others.
At first sniff, I prefer this to the Parfum version. It’s a bit more restrained and less cloying. A scent I’ve never tried before. Great perfume.
Rose Prick and Black Orchid by Tom Ford are my absolute favorites 😍.
I truly respect this fragrance; I acknowledge it’s a classic, but it wasn’t for me. I tested it on blotter and my husband on skin, then I tried Velvet Orchid again. Black Orchid is curious: it claims to have a citrus opening, but I don’t find that brightness; it smells homogeneous, like all the low notes of every instrument playing together at once. My husband didn’t like it on skin, and neither did I. Then I tried Velvet Orchid, and he said nothing, just like with Black Orchid. With all due respect, the line smells to me like Day of the Dead altars in Mexico: flowers, fruits, food, incense, chocolate, and wood that create a very characteristic smell after a few hours. Just from that association, I don’t enjoy wearing it, and beyond that, that scent has always seemed bothersome to me. I wanted to find some sensuality and a unique side, but it’s not going to happen. Always, always, always test before buying. For those who enjoy it, congratulations!
Something similar happens with Erba Pura: both have low ratings, but 90% of people who smell them will like it. I love it, but more on skin than in the air. Projection is good, though not as much as the website claims; it lasts about 12 hours. I get that it might not suit everyone, but I doubt anyone would hate it in the air. It’s an Autumn-Winter scent, so I wouldn’t wear it above 72°F (22°C), but it’s great for daily winter wear with just a few sprays. I’d say it’s for ages 25+, but since it doesn’t smell offensive or difficult, younger people can use it too. Rating: 8.0/10.
Something unique—commercial fragrance fans should stay away. The definitive scent for dressing in black, totally unisex.
Better balance between fresh and warm. Pleasant scent, well-dosed, with a subtle trail that doesn’t bother anyone. Perfect for day or night. Recommended to add to your collection.
What a weird opening note—like a hit of licorice? Doesn’t matter, the dry-down is top-notch and lasts all day.
I tried it and loved it; I’m not crazy enough to spend the small fortune it’s worth. Nothing in my life warrants spending a fortune on a perfume and although I also hate luxury I must admit this luxury is very well made. The opening is fresh citrusy and sharp thanks to the prominent blackcurrants; the heart is no longer so fresh a spectacular combination of all the notes that places you directly in autumn/winter/evening/night. I disagree with those who say it’s for all day and that you need to over-apply; it’s heavy and very durable lasting more than 12 hours with incredible projection. I tested it on skin and on the blotter I left on the dresser; when you enter the room you can smell it perfectly. I don’t perceive it as feminine; for me it’s barely unisex more masculine. It reminded me a lot of the legendary Versace Versus Uomo from 1991 (the blue one) in its heart and base; they share several notes and although neither contains the other they have a very similar dry note a mix of laurel and eucalyptus leaves. I think Mr. Ford is very rough but he chose the noses behind this well.
It’s h-e-r-r-o-s-o-m-e dark gothic sensual; I couldn’t stop smelling my arm when I tested it in the perfumery. I was about to buy it despite the price but a friend made me try a clone from an Argentine house. I was like WTF?? Even the same bottle just a name change Orchidee Noir from Yves d’Orgeval. I bought it for one-tenth the price; it’s the same and the longevity… 🙏🏻
I love perfumes. I’m a collector and my wife specifically gave me this one. It seems unique as its name suggests Black Orchid. The black orchid doesn’t actually exist; it’s an idea a myth… Orchid truffle and chocolate. That’s what it smells like with some variations or reminiscences of other things. It’s exquisite undeniably attention-grabbing. It’s Tom Ford’s signature fragrance and I have to admit it’s my fetish scent. It lasts projects and makes you feel unique. And here I am ridiculous as I am not understanding why but that’s just how it is.
And I don’t see anything feminine about it at all. It’s a masculine scent wearable by someone bold but not feminine.
Tom Ford – Black Orchid ‘The perfume that changed my life.’ My first review. I met it a few years ago around 2019; it had been in perfumeries for years but I was still inexperienced. I tried Black Orchid alongside Noir Extreme from the same brand and although the latter seemed easier I couldn’t stop smelling my hand with the first one; it had ‘something’. It was different from everything I had smelled before. 🪄Much later I discovered it was also my favorite perfumer’s pick and everything made sense. 🌑 Dark. Earthy. Mystical. A mix of black truffle jasmine incense and patchouli that creates a dense hypnotic almost supernatural elegance. 🌙 Ideal for cold nights and special occasions although personally I’ve worn it on all kinds of occasions (note: it looks GREAT in summer). It’s my absolute favorite: a union of art darkness and desire. 🕢 Longevity and projection: Brutal—no need to talk about hours just presence. ⭐ Rating: 10/10 (and if I could an 11).
Come on this fragrance could be somewhat matronly to a certain extent however it’s not one of those that gives an old lady vibe; it’s an elegant woman’s scent that draws attention wherever she goes without trying. For me it’s more feminine than unisex has excellent longevity but I only recommend it for night use. I feel it could be versatile for cold or hot weather but I insist on night only. In my opinion the Mexican chocolate patchouli orchid truffle and some woody notes are quite perceptible. If you like oriental scents this is the best option.
It doesn’t smell like Coco Chanel like I’ve read; maybe a bit like Coco Noir but… forget it! It transports me to Sleepy Hollow; I imagine Katrina Anne Van Tassel in that Dark Forest like the one in the Wow with four wooden houses covered in mist a fireplace lit the innkeeper in his apron and the cemetery just two steps away. It also evokes Dorian Gray. It’s mysterious mystical elegant seductive unisex androgynous with character like Brian Molko addictive with floral halos not cloying sexual but not dirty like Cryptorchid more like The Sacred Mountain by Jodorowsky. Just look at the bottle to realize it. The Chilean director wore the same outfit at Marilyn Manson’s wedding to Dita Von Teese; she wore a Vivienne Westwood dress and you could smell Boudoir Black Orchid and Quelques Fleurs some Diptyque and lots of absinthe. My bottle is empty; it lasted a full month when full because this alchemist’s potion is made to conquer. 🕯️ 10/10.🔥
Just met this today and I don’t know why the dry-down reminded me quite a bit of Croxatto Man 🤷🏻.
I bought the perfume showed the bottle to the girl and told her NO that it was for women; she said it was unisex. I kept testing it but the scent of Black Orchid was imposing so I asked for a decant. On the way bursts of that smell reached my nose; it was addictive and I came back three days later. BO is all about extremes. Gentleman or lady? Yes but a rocker or goth girl can wear it too. Elegant or opulent? Yes but also rebellious. Can you love it? Yes but you can also hate it. It’s addictive but you might not be able to stand it. For a business meeting? Yes it feels opulent and elegant; for a club? Yes you’ll stand out and seduce. It’s complex but balanced. Flattering? Yes but it’s strong and can cause rejection. It’s sweet yet citrusy and floral; a woman wears it for its lasting floral trail a man for the citrus notes. It’s dark mysterious and different. Longevity and sillage are notable.
It’s an interesting perfume but incredibly strong; it’s not for everyday wear not just because of the scent but because it can be intimidating if you don’t wear it with a sense of humor. You have to respect it—don’t over-spray or it smells like you swallowed it; it gets into your brain. It’s floral with white flowers chocolate and a truffle note that gives it a special touch; depending on the batch longevity varies. I bought it in a set and noticed the travel size has a stronger truffle note than the full bottle perhaps due to maceration. It’s potent but the downside is that it’s been copied a lot nowadays; it lacks originality like any huge success and clones smell the same for less than a quarter of the price. If you’re looking for quality you’ll definitely like it but it’s not Tom Ford’s best right now.
