It’s a softer, kinder version of Black Orchid, with floral touches that make it more feminine. Ideal if the original’s intensity turns you off. The downside is that it doesn’t last or project; it becomes imperceptible after two hours. I’d only buy it at a massive discount.

I love the scent: fresh, floral, and intense, with exquisite honey that blends perfectly with the flowers and orchid. The myrrh and sandalwood at the end tie everything together. Flawless quality, but on my skin it’s a disaster: no longevity, no sillage, and after 20 minutes, I feel nothing. By an hour, there’s no trace. So sad because it’s my favorite.

Why pay so much to smell like citronella mosquito repellent?

Velvet Orchid is floral, sweet, and ambered, with an orchid that screams elegance and warmth. Even though it’s not my style, I admit the ingredients and quality are top-notch. The only flaw is the price, which depends on your wallet. It’s interesting to try as part of the Tom Ford collection, but test it before buying because it’s not for everyone. Distinctive scent, yes.

The first spray smells like alcohol, but once it dries, it’s irresistible. I don’t think it’s a ‘lady’ perfume—that’s more Black Orchid; this one is opulent and has presence. I’m sorry it doesn’t last as promised. It’s my fourth Tom Ford, and I’m starting to understand their style: very particular notes that don’t get confused with others. However, so far, the Thierry Muglers last longer, so I kept those as my signature. I’m building the Tom Ford collection and hope to find one that lasts longer because they’re delicious and distinct, and it’s a shame they fade over time.

I know it little, so I can’t comment on old batches. I love it; it could be my signature scent if I believed in that. It’s versatile but very ‘lady-like’, elegant, floral, and showy. That doesn’t mean it’s only for women or older people; with the rum note, a man could wear it without issues. Now the problem: it lasts quite a bit, but projects little. It’s basically skin-close and textile-focused. On clothes, it lasts a long time, like almost everything. The good thing is it’s easy to wear, not annoying, and has no strong oud notes or weird dry downs.

Opulent orchids, an incredible perfume with ten-out-of-ten longevity and projection. Unisex, ideal for cold days, elegant, versatile, and very unique. So rich!

It’s a beautiful perfume, more feminine than its sibling Black Orchid. It’s a floral bomb, sexy, and feminine. The blend of orchids, flowers, and spices creates a sensual aroma. While I imagine Brigitte Nielsen or Grace Jones with the Black on the androgynous side, with the Velvet I see myself as Monica Bellucci or Isabelle Adjani, more voluptuous.

I tried it to get to know it. Before, I used Black Orchid based on reviews and it didn’t disappoint, though my partner and I found it more masculine, so I kept it. Instead, I tried this one, and in one phrase: I can’t wait for her to wear it on her skin. Fantastic, feminine, provocative, for a strong, confident woman with presence.

A very pretty perfume that sticks close to the skin, powdery, soft, and floral, tender. It reminds me of my grandmother’s lipstick when I was a child. Pity that it doesn’t project on me, but on my mother, it goes beyond her arm—it’s amazing and lasts for hours.

Warm, sexy, and classy. The honey and myrrh dominate, creating an intoxicating effect that transports me to bohemian Parisian parties in the 20s. It reminds me of tobacco in a smoky, nighttime setting; in this era of clean scents, it sounds a bit old-fashioned.

With Velvet Orchid, I feel like a slob.

Curious how the perfume changes on paper versus skin. I promised myself not to get dizzy at the counter and picked this one. First on my hand, then on paper… what a difference! On my skin (with my pH), it’s super feminine—a velvety, delicate orchid with white flowers, honey, and rum at the start. As it dries down, it becomes muted with vanilla. On paper, it smells more like the sister to Black Orchid: masculine, with sandalwood, myrrh, suede, and citrus notes at the beginning. Imagine the difference. I would have bought it on the spot if I smelled it on skin; on paper, I thought, ‘This is nothing like what I smelled on my hand.’ Totally recommend testing on skin to see which notes emerge. The longevity disappointed me a bit compared to Black Orchid, but it lasted a decent 4-5 hours before fading to skin scent.

More feminine than the original Black Orchid and more wearable. I gifted it to my mother because she adores floral scents. It’s a very well-made oriental floral. I never wore it myself, but on her, it highlighted a combo of sweet roses and orange blossom with an ambered oriental sandalwood from the heather. I don’t know if they reformulated it, but when it first hit the market, it had good fixity and sillage. Perfect for elegant women with a formal style, great for leisure, meetings, dining out, or dinner dates. It’s seductive, ideal for romantic dates, and suitable for any age. A young woman can wear it without issue if she likes prominent oriental scents. A well-made and modern perfume. It smells stylish.

Delicious perfume, candied honey and flowers, rich from start to finish. Too bad the dry-down arrives too soon for me; it was gone after 4 hours, and the sillage is moderate only for the first hour, which gives it a pretty bad quality-to-price ratio. Fortunately, I tested it several days with a decant; I won’t buy it much to my regret.

Wonder in a bottle.

From my olfactory preferences, nothing attracts me. It smells like an older lady, like Yves Saint Laurent’s Opium from the late 90s. It makes me nauseous and offers nothing new.

The scent is exquisite… a rum-honey aroma, slightly chocolatey (but dark chocolate), and I can smell the truffle note from Black Orchid. However, unlike the latter… the longevity, fixity, and sillage on me leave much to be desired. Unfortunately, it’s a fragrance that hypnotizes me for only about 30 minutes; after that, I have to literally bury my nose in the spot where I applied the perfume to smell it… it’s a shame because it just doesn’t play well with my skin. It’s definitely a good example of: 1. You have to test before buying. 2. Just because the original or another from the same brand is excellent or matches your skin well doesn’t mean all others will be the same. 3. Just because it’s a prestigious brand doesn’t mean their perfumes are excellent in longevity and projection for everyone… every person is different. The fact that it lasts long for half the world doesn’t mean it will for you… you might get lucky, or like me, you might end up disappointed.

I was looking for something with character and off the beaten path. Velvet Orchid caught my eye, and after testing it, I jumped on it. I love it, and it grows on me with every wear. It doesn’t go unnoticed; it stands out for its elegance. It’s not for very casual outings, but rather for dressed-up occasions. It’s not fresh enough for a 90-degree summer day, but in colder weather or for special events, it’s a hit. To me, it reminds me of Mugler’s Angel, but personally, I prefer Velvet Orchid.

Velvet Orchid is less heavy than Black (pre-reformulation), but still intense. Right out of the bottle, it smells like boozy orchid (thanks to the rum), then the honey emerges giving it that velvety touch; I notice the sandalwood a few hours later along with the suede. I love the trail; you’re coquettish and steal glances. I admire its longevity and hope they don’t reformulate it. I have a decant and now I need the full bottle.
LizGlz
Without a doubt, it’s the younger sister of Black Orchid: more shy and discreet, yet with presence and elegance. Unlike Black, I don’t feel it’s unisex; it’s more feminine and floral. It has a great trail and longevity. If Black felt too heavy for you, give this a try; it will surely conquer you.
Fragancias y momentos
Hands down, this is my most elegant perfume, but not in a stuffy, old-man way. It’s an aroma that says HERE I AM, nothing discreet. If you use the right amount, it’s rich, but oh dear friend! If you overdo it, you’ll suffocate everyone. I made that mistake once and learned my lesson. I like it from the moment I apply it, but once it settles… exquisite. Top category.

I like the initial sensation, but after it dries down, it smells only of sandalwood, jasmine, and vanilla. The longevity is wonderful, but I miss an acidic note or the bergamot from the start to cut through that cloying sweetness. It certainly reminds me of the original Alien, perhaps due to the jasmine. I like it, but I’m not sure if I’ll repurchase.

With this Tom Ford, you can’t go unnoticed: it’s intense, sophisticated, and sensual. It’s pricey, but worth it for its originality, trail, and longevity.
VainillaDulce
Another gorgeous perfume best experienced as a decant. Velvet Orchid is the younger sister of Black Orchid; it shares much of its dry-down profile. It’s equally beautiful but tamed. It’s mystical, sexy, coquettish, enveloping, and succulent, but without the bewitched femme fatale vibe of Black. It’s a great option for those who couldn’t handle Black’s untamable character: same DNA, but simpler to wear. It opens with boozy honey, then orchid and fleeting white flowers join in; once it settles on the skin, elegant vanilla, myrrh, and sandalwood appear. Great elegance, captivating charm, and a trail and longevity that deserve applause.

I couldn’t agree more with @VainillaDulce. I always read your reviews; you have a gift and you express yourself in a way that’s impossible to misunderstand. <3 Velvet Orchid opens like an aged, boozy orchid, as if after years of not wearing it you're thinking: wow, it smells great, but has it gone bad? In the dry down, it's much more floral than Black, less aggressive, sexual, and mysterious. It's more elegant, velvety, and much more wearable. In the dry down, myrrh, vanilla, and orchid stand out. It's beautiful, long-lasting, and has a moderate trail (it never gets heavy).

A pleasant attraction that one person exerts over another: that’s how I define eroticism, and this is the perfect definition for this fragrance. Velvet Orchid is delicious, with an initial explosion of rum, honey, and flowers, before settling into creamy vanilla and sublime myrrh. In my opinion, it’s for an independent, confident woman who doesn’t need anything or anyone and leaves a trail of admiration. Luxurious, sweet, sexy, and erotic; the definitions don’t end there. For women 30 and up; young girls should abstain. Less dark than Black, but more feminine. Longevity and trail are impressive. Exclusive night wear. If you want something different, don’t hesitate. The only downside is the price, but it’s worth it. My favorite perfume on my wife’s skin. Thanks, Tom Ford, for this masterpiece. Cheers to everyone.

At first, I hesitated; it seemed like a scent for older people, the typical one that smells like your grandma’s friend. But after a while, I noticed it smelled sweet, elegant, and totally out of the ordinary. I loved it, bought it, and it’s an aroma that stays with me all day.
