Here, the amber doesn’t weigh you down; it floats. Cumin keeps it light, while the curry—which should be more famous—truly shines. It’s vertical, like smoke rising from incense, yet it’s floral nectar. It’s serious yet cheerful, a Pythia from Delphi: ominous like a prophecy and wild like a delirium.
A super medicinal amber tamed with cumin, resulting in a light scent. The star note is the curry tree, which I think deserves more fame because it works brilliantly. Ambers are usually heavy and solemn, and Barkhane is no exception, but it has a beautiful verticality—a lift that evokes smoke rising from an incense burner (if the smoke weren’t smoky, but rather flower nectar). Is it serious or joyful? I’d say it’s like the Pythia of Delphi: ominous as a prophecy, yet wild as the delirion that springs forth.
On my skin, it starts super spicy with a soft, wearable curry. As it dries down, that spice recedes and it becomes warm, ambered, and vanilla-scented. I detect labdanum and myrrh, a smoky balsamic character I love. There’s an animalic musk (not dirty) that rounds everything out. Sometimes it smells like oud, but subtly—perfect for testing. It’s unisex, autumnal/wintery, deep, and mysterious. It’s in my top 3 Teo Cabanel scents. Ultimately, it smells a bit like Café Cabanel. Projection is moderate at first, then intimate, but it lasts over 8 hours on skin. I love it so much I’d love to buy a bottle.
Powerful, spicy, and peppery with a fruity touch, yet surprisingly light. After ten minutes, it transforms and I absolutely love how it dries down. If the longevity were better (I’ve only tested samples), I’d buy it without hesitation.
Strong at first, spicy with a fruity touch. ¡Very light! After 10 minutes, it changes and I like it more in the dry-down. Depending on the longevity (I only tested samples), it would be one I’d buy.
It’s easy to wear and smells great for spice lovers. I don’t detect any citrus notes at first despite the bergamot. The curry and cumin are well-executed, soft, and balanced. The dry-down is rich, ambered, and vanilla-scented, similar to Café Cabanel. It has good sillage at first, but by the hour it’s skin-scent and lasts 5-6 hours. I think that’s short for the price. I’ll keep testing the Teo Cabanel kit to find my perfume. Scent 8.5/10, Longevity 6/10, Sillage 8/10, Value 6/10, Versatility 7/10, Packaging 9/10. Would I buy again? No, I didn’t buy it.
I loved Barkhane; you feel comfortable wearing it regardless of whether you’re a man or a woman. My husband and I wore it together today, and it couldn’t be better. It comes off very masculine, but then it settles and becomes perfect for anyone. On me, the myrrh, tonka bean, and the woody touch of oud stand out, with a very tasty vanilla base that isn’t cloying. It’s well-balanced; it doesn’t bother or overwhelm. Its sillage is wide and the longevity is great. I put it on this morning and I can still smell it at 4 PM. Great for day or night, very user-friendly.
Thanks to fragrantica.com I was able to try it; I doubt it would have ended up in my hands without last year’s giveaway. Like dhoakohime, it reminds me of Ambre Sultan, but Barkhane is more ethereal and subtle, perhaps which is why it’s less long-lasting. It’s not as intense as Lutens’, it is more woody and spicy, less herbal. In Ambre Sultan, green herbs like coriander and patchouli stand out, with oregano and laurel secondary; in Barkhane, the herbal notes fall to cumin and curry. These notes are perceptible and scared me at first, but they blend perfectly, moderating alongside a faint oud and the warm sweetness of vanilla-cistus-labdanum. A dense, bitter-sweet myrrh gives it that exotic, mysterious touch I love. It’s a spicy oriental with everything: resins, spices, flowers, powdery, smoky, almost mystical, but with ethereal elegance.
Totally my style. A warm, rich amber that reminds me of Serge Lutens’ Ambre Sultan. The latter is denser, herbal, and sweeter; Barkhane is less dense, lighter, and more woody, slightly more masculine, though a woman can wear it perfectly (I plan to). The oud (very little) adds bitterness to the heart, tempering the sweetness. Labdanum gives a powdery touch and softness, though the sensation remains dense, herbal, sweet, spicy, warm, and rich amber. It’s not very original, but it’s good quality, a perfect resinous amber for autumn and winter.
